no you are wrong.   while i hate that daniel was put in that position (very nice kid and a heart of gold), actually the lisch family had no business pushing slu into letting daniel on the team for a year.   he wasnt good enough and rickma made no bones about it, the kid wasnt going to get a chance and the lisch's took it anyway.    father biondi pushed rickma into doing it and played his "i'm the boss" card.

so anyway, no i had no problem with that one.    should have never happened.

Oh wow.  I'm glad I brought that up because I wrongly had it in my head for a long time that Daniel Lisch's one year scholarship was one of your main beefs with Majerus.  I definitely appreciate your opinion more now even if I don't necessary agree with it.

heck i detested rickma long before that.   however, the issue of creaming players was definitely my top beef with him.    that was just wrong.   you recruit someone you live with it try to coach them up if it doesnt work you deal with it for the full scholarship period.   if the player of concern is a bad teamate, a bad student or a bad citizen, by all means cut bait.   but if the coach just f'd up and made a bad judgement, deal with it.   rickma didnt offer daniel.   so he shouldnt have been put in that position.

Since you are a great fan of the Billiken’s, It’s too bad that you detest the greatest coach in Billiken’s history. If the scholarships are year to year, and the players know it, I don’t see what is the problem.

Also, while many of his ex-players may have hated him, there are also many that loved him. I still fondly remember when Brian Conklin broke down after the Michigan State game and paid homage to Coach Majerus. I’d be interested to know how the other members of that team felt about Coach M.

Not denying Rickma was a basketball genius.   Even i enjoyed his oncourt management  and his ability to get his players to play his way.  Both seem to be less emphasized  in today's  game where it's more about recruiting and the ability to reload every year.

However I greatly disliked the fact Rickma used teenagers  to fill his roster and then discarded them if their only fault was they didn't live up to the skill level and development he had envisioned.   Conklin is a great example of the kid that overachieved and by his senior year was exactly what rickma envisioned.   Good for Conklin.   And while rickma gets some great credit for what Conklin turned into.   He also gets credit for the unplanned rocky and in some cases failed journeys for all those players he cutted from his teams as well.

I should have said greatest coach in the modern era. However, Majerus' career record as a college coach is probably better than Hickey's.

Honest question.

Joe, I don't think you are going to be able get many if any minutes for us now or in the future. I honestly think you might be better off at a school where you can play. If you'd like I'll help you find a place that is a better fit for you.

Is this running a kid off? Or would you consider that an acceptable conversation? MY feeling is if that's truly the way a coach feels, any conversation that doesn't basically say that is a disservice to the player.

Now if a kid says. I understand coach but I want to stay and prove you wrong. As long as he is a good student, teammate, and puts out max effort I'd tend to agree. If a player doesn't really give his all and work hard to improve and be as good as he possibly can, imo is a bad teammate and can go. I get that's a subjective issue. But honestly I doubt many players want to stay if they've been told there aren't going to be minutes for them. I wouldn't.

first off i dont think that is the way the conversation typically went.  anyway, i dont think the subject should be brought up by rickma.   if he wants to announce to the whole team "we are going to have one on one discussions about your future development" and when they have that meeting the player of concern says he thinks he wants to move on.   so be it.   but regardless, the above is just a soft approach to kicking the player off the team imo.

@thetorch, anything you've seen or heard about Bess getting an invite to a training camp this year? A quick Google search brought up nothing and it looks like he's not on the Pelicans roster.

I think that Bess sort of addressed this in this interview with The House That Rick Built.  I can't remember what exactly the answer was and it I think it was vague.  Something like he was not currently planning on going overseas, hoping to catch on with an team NBA team / G-League team, but his agent was still working on things.

Right. I'm assuming that was taped close to a month ago, and camps are starting to open now, hence the question as to if there's been any movement.

That dunk from Hughes brought the house down.  I don’t think I’ve ever jumped higher out of a seat during a sporting event.  Good times.

I think that is too weak. Although they are "college kids", they are all adults. Conversations like that are doing exactly what college should do - preparing them for the real world.

I didn't want to extend that conversation. But I agree.  if a coach doesn't think a kid is going to play much, should he not tell the kid? You either speak to the kid or you falsely lead him on. Of course it's not an easy conversation but not having it with a player is truly the injustice to the player

This is why the Lord sent Travis Ford to us, to develop and field the best teams we ever had and to eventually become the greatest coach in our history. I think Billiken Roy may see it that way as well.

I think most folks would agree with this. I think this year we even found out about the ability for guys to remain on full scholarship at a school if they are essentially cut from the team (saw this at Nebraska). I also don't want to continue the discussion too much, but my understanding early on was that Majerus wouldn't necessarily have those conversations and it was more of the old pink slip in the locker type situation. With Ford I am confident that he would lay it all out for guys and help them find a new home, definitely seems like a player's coach through and through.

Majerus didn't have a lot of patience for guards who didn't contribute right away.  Hence the revolving door of guys who were 8th/9th in the rotation.  That was his way but sometimes if you stick with a guy, you'll be pleasantly surprised.  Our own Demarius Jacobs is a good example.  A guard with his freshman numbers would never have survived under Majerus.

Dismissing someone without the honest and Frank conversation is even more wrong. If that was happening I would be very disappointed.

My understanding was is he did not have those frank discussions with guys Soderberg recruited. I think he went in assuming any underclassmen of that group were not worth keeping.

I believe he did have those talks when things weren’t working out with his guys.

I don’t know how much of a chance he gave any of those guys.  I believe he later admitted that if he’d known how good Danny Brown could be, he would have had him redshirt his senior year and kept him around longer.

If this was true wouldn't McCall been sent packing mid semester sophomore year?

Majerus made some recruiting errors with guards but most of them left because they were headcases, or injuries, or both.

McCall not only contributed immediately, he was our leading scorer as a freshman.  He had already demonstrated his value by his sophomore year.  C'mon man.
