kappy96
At UCLA... Andy Katz reporting on ESPN that Alford is going to be named UCLA's new coach. Guess the Bruins were impressed with that loss to Harvard.
billikens747
Wow, I guess that 10 year extension he just sign didn't mean jack. 7 years, 2.6 mil with UCLA.
slu06
Wow, I guess that 10 year extension he just sign didn't mean jack. 7 years, 2.6 mil with UCLA. Except an impending breach of contract lawsuit from UNM...
Littlebill
Except an impending breach of contract lawsuit from UNM... Only takes effect on April 1. No legal wrongdoing by Alford
billikens747
Also this thread title is kind of misleading considering our coaching situation.
TheA_Bomb
Yeah, way to bait and switch. Alford's done alright at UNM but he didn't tear it up at Iowa. Maybe he's learned since then, I guess Stevens turned them down. I think he's a better choice.

TheA_Bomb
Why you mad bro? Mad Alford's getting paid? Mad that UCLA kinda' struck out? In my opinion. It seems that they could pull from just about any school in the country but they got a guy who has a spotty overall track record. I think Romar would've been better but Romar is at his alma mater. WestCoastBilliken
No one wanted UCLA's money and the mess that place is in. Seriously... this was a desperation hire after all their top prospects said no to them.
DeSmetBilliken
I saw on Twitter that Alford was upset with UNM that they said that his salary increase would be funded by increased ticket and concession prices. Also saw that Alford's agent negotiated a $1M buyout, which sounds low by big money coach standards.

How else are coaches salary increases supposed to be funded besides higher costs to the fans and why would saying that make a coach angry enough to want to leave? I really hate the annual coaching carousel. It's about as slimy as it gets to accept a 10 year extension and only a couple weeks later leave. TheA_Bomb
It's just an excuse he's giving hoping that that Lobos fans won't hate him because he's a man of the people. I don't hate the coaching changes. It's just the way things work there are no guarantees. When they offered him that extension the UCLA offer wasn't done the situation changed and he jumped to one of the premier basketball schools in the country. Coach speak and AD speak mean nothing. Majerus was one of the few that gave interesting quotes. Rarely do you catch someone with their guard down and they make a meaningful comment. DeSmetBilliken
UCLA to pay buyout. Right, but if he had a buyout in the range of a few million more, he might have been a less attractive option. Granted UCLA might still have paid it, but other schools might have been scared off it the buyout was in the $3-5M range.

For-DaLove
I read something that said his new contract wasn't set to go into effect until April 1st so it really means nothing. He'll be there 4 years max. First round losses to Harvard won't cut it at UCLA. Hell, Final Fours don't cut it there, which was proven by Howland being canned. I'm not suggesting it's a good reason to want to leave shortly after signing an extension, but I think we would prefer to think that a salary increased resulted from the school getting boosters to throw in more money than fans having to pay an extra $1 for a hot dog at the game. A few weeks ago I heard a friend of a former referee tell a story about Alford. In a game during Alford's last season at Iowa, Steve was working the ref as usual, complaining about calls, etc. During the game, Alford eventually told the ref, "I've got to get out of Iowa. If you hear of any jobs that are going to open up, let me know."
