a myth? in what way? are you denying the major even existed or the fact that sociology was the basketball major of choice in the 90's and early 00's? williams, boozer, avery, brand, i believe were all sociology majors. williams graduated in 2.5 years while playing international ball in the summers and duke ball half of the rest of the year. for that to be possible, sociology major is either a joke or williams was a worthy rhodes scholar.

as to your proof, we arent really interested in the rest of the athletic dept which i agree is probably on the up and up. we are only talking about duke basketball. coincidentally, other than duke basketball, the rest of duke athletics hasnt been quite on the same success level has it?

Yes, there is a sociology major, and a lot of basketball players took the course. But it was not toned down for them... that is crappola. Do you think sociology majors are insignificant? Not credible?

We just read Cassity and Conklin have are close to or have already completed their undergraduate degrees... are they criminals, too, like the example you always use about Williams? Did you ever hear of high school credit applying to college? Taking extra hours?

The biggest problem was football, they could not find 75 athletes to compete with the Fla State Criminoles that could handle the Duke curriculum... as I stated, they brought in a new coach 5 yrs ago and promised to relax the standards so that they could at least avoid 1-10 seasons.

And there has been a lot of success at Duke in multiple sports, though not as much as hoops. Their soccer team would beat ours, 2-0 (blowout!). And Duke womens teams have excelled. Look at the website, pleanty of ACC Championships in numerous sports.

Duke is not 1,000% sqeaky clean. But what program has been as successful, without arrests, illegal recruiting, disgraceful exhibitions by coaches, the last 15-20 yrs. Kentucky? Cincy? Memphis? Oklahoma? WV? Who do you admire for their winning record and scholastic integrity more? Tell me.

Hmm...

On December 23rd 2010 you discussed the lack of interest in soccer in the U.S.

On December 24th, 2010 you compared MLS to the top handful of American Professional sports leagues of other sports.

Am I getting closer?

The search button is your friend.

Wait a minute! Now you're wandering off to other threads! Which rules are you following here? Oh wait, you don't have to follow the rules you set up! :D

Of course I've posted about lack of interest in other threads. The lack of of interest is noted by poor ratings. That can't really be disputed.

i believe it was said cassity and conklin will get their diploma's after this semester (third year) plus cassity and conklin have not been traveling all over the world in the summer and instead going to school at slu full time for 3 straight summers. so that is quite a bit of difference in additional available time to complete course work as compared to williams. but you keep telling yourself that williams was a rhodes scholar and it all made sense without raised eyebrows.

Also from what I understand, sitting within 20 feet of coach K on gameday is about as disgraceful an exhibition as you can find.

why are we comparing duke to the real criminal programs? that's some competition to be better than. where did i bring up arrests and disgraceful exhibitions by coaches?

as to picking a program to admire more? when mixing athletics and academics, that's a tough answer i dont think i want to pick in division 1 because frankly, i do not have much hope or evidence for D1 programs to be able to admire and completely respect wholey from both standpoints.

You're right and it's wrong of us to engage him in conversation. However, it's like when one of your friends sends you an internet porn joke with a pic of a naked obese girl. You know you shouldn't look, you don't want to look ... then you do. It's stupid, gross, nasty, and disgusting. You knew it was going to be, but you looked anyhow.

Hi, My name is Jim Hoffman and I take advantage of MB73's lack of inteligence. Is there a 12 step program?

Personally, I have no real issues with Duke. They are an admirable program that has accomplished a lot in their history. Having said that, to constantly espouse and support Duke on a SLU message board is equivalent to a Yankees fan doing the same thing on an Indians or Royals board. Your only accomplishment is coming off as a ******.

12:52pm...this thread...you referenced posts from other threads critical of families not supporting women's soccer. I know you have short term memory loss and forgot your end of December posts, but...today?...really? 12:52pm.

So now we are back to lack of interest, poor ratings etc...ahh I see.

You ripped Duke & Coach K first, unrelated to the subject matter initially posted. Dumbass loser...

Good that you are not immature like some others and just hate Duke out of jealousy or something. Read the thread, slufan hoosier just attacked Coach K for no reason, in a post responding to me about soccer. Read it before you dare call me a ******. Duke is a program that SLU should want to emulate, and we have loser nobody hoosiers here that hate Duke for no apparent reason. Just plain hate.

This is my annual thread, when some loser attacks, I always ask them what program is better, all around? No one ever has an answer.

I am done.

I'm glad you're done since you basically hijacked this thread about soccer (Which you were so horribly wrong about; I understand why you changed the topic) and turned it into a thread about coach k and how much you want to lick his toes (figuratively since I know you like to take things literally).

Gotta love a guy who calls others immature in the same paragraph in which he name calls/attacks others 4 times, and in a thread in which he does it well over a dozen times.

Mirrors are inexpensive.

I guess when you were getting cut from all the freshman teams in high school, you never dreamed you would be able to vent your humiliation and frustrations and call guys a "******" anonomously and get away with it.

at 12:52 I was answering your question, after you strayed from the topic. Can't count that one either. I do appreciate how hard you're trying, though.

so you can reference other sports, other threads, etc. but no one else can. I get it. You did exactly what I led you to do...absolutely contradict yourself by doing exactly what you were whining about. You're just like a puppet. Stay on topic!

Hey, I like soccer quite a bit. I just have a more realistic view of it's popularity in this country. Sorry I stepped on your blue suede sambas.

Hey ace, "who is Craig Upchurch?" :P Here's another famous ace question: "who is Orlando Stewart?" :P:P

I love it when ace enlightens us all with of his SLU basketball wisdom, especially since he knows so much of our history. ;)

After more than 10 years on this board ace is still washing and waxing Mr. Miyagi's cars.

Kevin.

You started this thread to try to support your flawed opinion that soccer lacks popularity in the U.S.

Your support for that opinion is the lack of success of a local womens professional soccer team and the lack of local success of a minor league men's soccer team.

A+B does not equal Z.

You try to compare these and other leagues to top level division leagues of other sports as well.

You ignore any and all facts that don't support your flawed theory.

When your flawed positions becomes exposed, repeatedly, you get riled up ad try to belittle others that do not support your flawed position. Repeat cycle. Groundhog day.

There are easier and more long lasting ways to gain self-esteem.

I do not think the problem with soccer in the US is popularity. I think soccer is actually quite popular but I think the competition for the dollars to be successful is difficult. Baseball and football are very difficult to compete with. The interest is there but in todays environment, soccer in the US is just a little late to the marketshare game. I think the MLS is working in the right direction by growing slowly and trying to get a solid base to work from. IMO it could succeed but they will have to continue on a slow strong growth because when you talk MLB and NFL, billions is the conversation. The NHL and NBA are both feeling the effects of the big 2 and have been popular and established in the US for many years. Soccer in St. Louis is still incredibly popular but yet these folks fail to support the attempts of professional teams.

Back in the days of the Metro league that played at Fairgrounds park and the CYC teams that played all over the area it was said why would you pay to see the pro team (The Stars) when you could see just as good a level of soccer on any given sunday for free at the parks around STL.
