courtside
According to Andy Katz: Former Virginia coach Pete Gillen, who is in Columbus, Ohio, broadcasting games for Westwood One radio, met with South Florida athletic director Doug Woolard. It's too early to say whether Gillen is a favorite for the job, but clearly he's educating Woolard on what needs to be done for the Bulls to be a major player in the Big East. The Bulls must continue to pour resources into the job to make it as competitive as any in the league, but the bottom line is unless they win, it will be hard to continue to garner interest. Gillen is hardly the only name in play at South Florida. This job is getting plenty of interest. According to multiple sources, the Bulls could be looking at VCU's Anthony Grant, who once interviewed for the job before Robert McCullum (but don't expect him to go there according to sources close to the situation). Sources say South Alabama coach John Pelphrey (who like Grant is a former Florida assistant), Marshall of Winthrop, George Washington's Karl Hobbs (if they can get the buyout worked out) and current Florida assistant Larry Shyatt are also in the running.
