I admittedly didn’t watch ISU this year. Just watched Avila highlights. He looks terribly slow and unathletic.

Made an effort to recruit local guys.
Was good with local media and good spokesperson for SLU.
His players liked playing for him for the most part and they never gave up.
Won a good amount of regular season games.

As much as I hate the waiting game, I think it’s bad juju to openly root against a team just so we could potentially get a coach faster (not to mention potentially get some of the same players too)…

Of course there are no guarantees in this crazy world we’re living in. Schertz probably ISN’T the messiah. Hell, he’s never even coached in a single ncaa tourney game. But I agree with the majority that he looks like a solid hire and I could see him being successful here.
As for Ahearn, if he’s this incredible diamond in the rough, we can hire him in 3 years after Schertz moves on due to incredible success or disappointing failure.

Did you guys not watch this season? One of the worst defensive teams in all of college basketball! Hughes will stay for obvious reasons. I’d like to see Thames stay because he has the ability to be a really good college player under the right coach/system. Not for sure about all the conjecture around Jimerson.. everyone else, we need some serious upgrades…

I’m somewhere in the middle…. These coaches have been getting bags for a while. And some like Sabin, urban Meyer, Bobby knight, et al had absolute, unadulterated , emperor like status and power. That might be changing for the good. Also, I’m glad these kids can get compensated for their services now and I think they should. After all, this is America!
However, what has transpired with the open transfer market and no holds bar NIL has hurt the product on the court/field. I don’t think the teams are as good as they used to be and it’s not as entertaining to watch. Combined with this mass hysteria to join mega leagues, I think there will be a tipping point. Can’t wait for that classic Big 10 matchup of Rutgers and UCLA next year! Talk about cross continent rivalry!!
