And finally a power forward with the prototypical power forward size! He had a lot of big-time programs recruiting him just two years ago. Pus, he would have received quality coaching at Miami, spent two years in an ACC strength and conditioning program, and competed against some dudes day in and day out. I think this is the profile of transfer we should expect to see a lot of for programs at the level of SLU.

Good point about the strength and conditioning program. Casey is listed at 6-9....going into his senior year of high school, he weighed 180 pounds...now he's listed at 220...takes time to blossom in a body that has changed that much.

Saw one post where Trilly said he was headed here.

could be a Diamond in the rough. Last year Freshman played limited at Creighton. Was Gatorade player of the year for Nebraska senior year. State champ

State champ twice, state finals all four years, undefeated final season...as a freshman he scored eight points to start a game-ending 16-0 run , resulting in a 2-point victory and state title...that's a winner.

This stuff is the ultimate St. Louis nonsense.

There is nothing wrong with Vianney or the Vianney basketball team.  Coach Walsh is hugely respected in the area.  I see no backlash when a team from DeSmet or CBC do the same things.  The catholic HSs usually act terribly during games.  It was much better in the 90s, when the North County schools like mine didn't have all their athletes stolen by those schools.  We went into those schools and taught the spoiled rich boys some humility.  And their daddy's would never be brave enough to come out of the stands and fight us.

Do people from North County schools go into St. Peters and teach spoiled rich boys some humility?

We also need to remember that we just brought in a coach that has a certain system.  In my mind, Yuri would not have fit in Schertz's offense.  I'm not sure than anyone who's superskill is slashing to the rim fits Schertz's system if they cannot fill it up from three.  Also, Schertz seems to be valuing size.

Zyree Collins can create his own shot from anywhere. Walsh, getting him now as a role player might be a good move in landing the 7-foot-3 teammate eventually. Good to hear CJS has contacted them.

If Schertz outrecruits Travis Ford we can be the dominant team in Saint Louis. Now that there is evidence of NIL money the local media is buzzing

    about the Bills

    we know he can coach

Are you saying 2 big men could be on the floor at once? How on earth could that lead to success?

I'm absolutely over the moon for this hire. The news is great and just gets better. Even if the honeymoon period this is great. The recruits mentioned have been great, the assistant and staff hires are great. SLU is finally getting things right for once.

I don't think we will have HCJS for long, but by God it is going to be fun. Let's go!

Continued major success at his Division 2 stop after he left...good sign that he leaves a program in good shape with good people...promoting from within at ISU after he left, another good sign of respect for his program.

“Pleasantly surprised by the number of kids interested in coming.”

This is huge. Likely only 3 guys returning from the previous season at SLU, normally spells doom…Schertz was quick to point out, however, he only had 4 returnees this past season at ISU.

Did you listen to the interview?  Bernie had a nice story on Rick near the end, after Schertz left.  Bernie is of course Polish, and his first Mother-In-Law made outstanding pierogies.  Bernie told Majerus about them, and the next day Rick called Bernie and asked if he could get some of the pierogies.  Bernie told Rick first, he wasn't married to that family anymore ans second his former MIL had passed.  Then Rick asked "Well could you still get the recipe?"  Bernie was convinced that if he had said yes that Rick would have driven to PA to get it. The way Bernie told the story was pretty neat.  If you have time, click the link and skip to about 28 min.

I nominate Next Year Bill to serve as coach Schertz's wing man to ensure a healthy, low fat diet. Stay away from Bernie, please!

Coach Schertz was on with Bernie today.  The most interesting comment was Schertz saying if ISU had lost to SMU early in the NIT, he might not have ended up here.  Over the length of the tourney he was able to develop a relationship with May, Pestello, Conran and Chaifetz.  They did a wonderful job of convincing him that he was the top priority.  May called him daily, sometimes twice a day, building the relationship.

Coach's values lined up with SLU's.  "This is a job I could be at the rest of my career."  The City fits me and the school fits me.  He didn't want to be in a fishbowl.  His older son has special needs.  He is not nomadic by nature.  "Everything needed to build a long term winning culture is present.  Alignment is here from the top down."

Talked about his ISU team.  He isn't worried about how many stars a player has or who is recruiting that player.  Guys need to fit his system, even though his system is malleable. He will bend his style to what he has.  He had big at LMU, Emanuel Terry - cup of coffee in the NBA, who couldn't shoot or pass but was elite as a dribbler and a rim runner.

Bernie asked about transfers, particularly the process and time table.  Coach wants to move expeditiously but intelligently and purposefully as possible.  Six or seven visits or more will happen in the next 10 days.  As of today, we have 2 players on the roster. We have one game scheduled. This will allow him to build the roster as he needs to and the schedule as he needs to.  He is confident we are in good shape with several players.  The goal of the schedule is to get an At Large if needed.  (Easy to read between the lines.)  We will have some good news in the next two weeks or so.  We can swim in different waters than we did at Indiana State because of all the things we have here at SLU.

Bernie and Coach bonded over food talk.  Bernie promised to take him to a restaurant Majerus liked and they named a chipeno after him.

Good grief, guess what happens when a coach bonds with Bernie over food?

SBV surprised me late in the season - once he started getting healthy, he showed some toughness and sneaky athleticism. That being said, I don't think he fits into the Schertz system. And Magassa is a mystery man since we didn't see him play, but he was recruited by the previous regime. I wouldn't be shocked if SVB and/or Magassa wind up with with Harriman at Charleston.

SVB's free throw percentage under .500 may be too much of a liability...although his assist-to-turnover ratio better aligns to the new system...7 assists vs. 6 turnovers, whereas EZ was 24/33 and Zhang 9/25.
