If SLU had a shot at landing a Love type FR, they should sign him. He’d at least give you a boost for one season. And if you can find the NIL $$’s to keep him, great, a bonus. It’s recruits like last year’s FR class that are the problem. Take Curcic for example. He always impressed me as a smart strong player with a good shot. But Ford just didn’t use him enough. No surprise he leapt into the portal. I guess Harriman’s departure didn’t help as both ended up here in Charleston. Still, I think a lot of FR like him will take their shot at the portal for a better playing opportunity or to earn some NIL $$’s. Medley’s another example. Why did he find the portal attractive? He came here for Ford. Ford goes he goes. Is Kent St gonna shower him with NIL $$’s? I doubt it. Again, a guy who improved at our expense and now taking it somewhere else.
This is what college sports has become. Every team may see wholesale roster turnovers every year. It sucks, but it’s the new reality.
I don’t even think Schertz could have kept the ISU 5 together if he had stayed given ISU’s lack of NIL $$’s. I think he knew this and was a big factor in his decision to jump ship.

Assuming Curcic is here on a student visa, he likely can’t receive NIL funds in the usual manner. Feel like solid international players are quickly going to be the “Moneyball” strategy for those whom NIL has left behind.

Well when players work-study there were probably not many international student athletes.  The Federal Government laws have no reason to care about the NCAA

    Yeah, agree.

Just saying that the inverse (NCAA respecting Federal laws) has decidedly not always been the case.

International players not getting NIL is not an NCAA rule but probably a federal visa restriction.  If you come to the USA on a student visa you cannot work and getting paid NIL is getting paid.

Yeah, just saying that it seems like NCAA and the US Govt are aligned on this.

I could have seen the NCAA trying to call NIL a form of work-study or stipend or something if they wanted to try to get away with it, like they did with “amateurism” for decades.

Instead, it looks like everyone is ok with not paying student visa holders (for now).

The fact that they had Pikaar in for a visit makes me think that Nitu is less than certain

Quick note/thought on the NIL/recruiting situation.

At present, I believe international players here on student visas are unable to be paid using NIL. At least in an above board manner.

Wonder if that will become a common way to round out rosters, and keep a supply of “free” labor available… several of these latest rumors involve international students, so wondering if that will be a way to funnel higher amounts to a smaller portion of the roster.

Also feel like this will be the hot new NCAA violation, but unlike with some of the older ones the courts will probably be on the side of the NCAA.

On the last @Midtown Madness we did a very quick combination of who we'd keep from each roster and ended up with:

    Avila
    Swope
    Conwell
    Kent

    Larry
    Jimerson
    Thames
    Curcic
    Hughes
    Williford
    Nitu
    Birmingham
    Alderink

The last 4 are signed HS players, Williford to SLU and the other 3 to ISU.

This team would be very expensive but would win the A10. The incoming players and Curcic would be nice values to round out the roster and keep the budget somewhat realistic.

I guess this also means Jaden Schertz would walk on.

I also realize that we wouldn't have much positional depth behind Avila but this was an unplanned exercise.

Random Note - the recruits listed above (Nitu, Alderink, Birmingham, and Williford) are all lefties... unless every piece of film on each of them is mirrored or something...

Here is how Avila, Kent, Swope, and Gibby ranked in the A10 this year in case people didn't see my post a few weeks ago(according to T-rank).

    Avila #2

    Kent #3

    Jimerson #14

    Swope #27

If we get Conwell #5 or Larry #13.

Yeah, this roughly aligns to Box Plus/Minus on cbref.com; basically, how far above or below average were you on offense and defense in your minutes. Pretty solid advanced metric to use to evaluate players.

Definitely seems like advance stats show Swope as the lowest rated Sycamore starter, with Avila>Conwell>Kent>Larry. Swope is rated similarly to Hargrove.

you never played competive sports did you?   at that level you are competitor and hate to lose.   your mantra changes.   the polite good guy during the game is rare and it is a curse that follows you forever.  in fact once your playing days are over, it translates to your fanship normally.    it is like an incurable disease.   but honestly I wouldnt have it any other way.   losers lose and accept it.  i detest it.  you want to criticize me for it, again i ask, "you never played competitive sports did you?"

    Gotta disagree.

Not having the ability to distinguish between rec vs competitive sports is immature. No need to be an @ss when you could just play hard. Plenty of the world’s greatest athletes were also noted for their sportsmanship. We like to highlight the “edge” that guys like MJ and Kobe had, but for everyone like that there is a Messi or Russell. You don’t have to be mean or condescending to be a great athlete.

And I say this only because you threw some unnecessary ad hominem shade, but a) we beat the faculty team (including her, Tony Young, and some tall prof who played D1 with a name I can’t remember) pretty handily that year and b) I was a starter for our club soccer team at SLU and played soccer and baseball at a pretty high level in HS (idk what you consider competitive sports, so laying it on the table).

i had a lot of conversations with Shimmy while she was the coach at slu.   she was fun to talk to and she obviously loved basketball.   watching her games though, it was obvious she was the women's version of ford, i.e. a recruiter but not a coach.   the legends of her practice and lockerroom tirades are boderline scary and the fact she chased off a number of very good players that ended up transferring up was her end.  an analyst position is probably the best place for her and i believe ford will end up the same.

Played against Shimmy in a Students vs Faculty charity game, and she was… not nice.

Bizarrely chewed out a men’s player (Dwayne Evans, I think) while he was reffing. And was trying to talk trash all game, it was really weird.

  9. Thames, Ezewiro, and Parker are the only players this year that played >200min with a positive BPM that are eligible to return.

Jimerson has exceeded this threshold every year in the past and barely missed this year, so he gets a pass. Curcic managed 0.4 while playing 178min, and Hargrove won’t be coming back.

That’s our core and who I hope any new coach tries to retain.

Agree that some others on the roster can develop and contribute down the road, but that’s where we are right now. Four above average returning players based on past performance.

Hughes was probably our best freshman defender since Goodwin.

He had a 2.2 defensive box +/- (DBPM), which is quite good... his DRating was less impressive, but that is a bit more of a team stat.

For context, Goodwin's freshman year DBPM was 3.2 - Fred's this year was 3.1. Goodwin's worst (Junior) season had him at 2.4...

  11. Hargrove and Collins combined for 14 turnovers. That’s 3.2 more than we’d averaged as a team so far. Feel like a reminder to play within themselves is in need. Thank god Nesbitt stepped up to make big shots, and Jimerson to ice it. We just played about as poorly as we can and came away with a win against a decent team. Not pleased but I’ll take it. Let’s clean up our act and trounce SFA.

After tonight’s game we were in 1st place in Concacaf qualifying. Mexico 2nd. Canada 3rd. Panama is a distant 4th. But Mexico is playing in Canada tonight. Top 3 automatically qualify. 4th place has to play a play-in against a team from another continent

I would not call Panama a distant 4th, they were only 3pts (one win) back before tonight’s games.

That said they are down 1-0 early vs El Salvador
