HELLO THERE ... Rick Majerus May 01, 2007 Age: 59 What he does: Newly hired head coach of the St. Louis Billikens. Hoops history: Majerus, who agreed to a six-year contract on Friday, has a career record of 422-147 with 15 postseason appearances. He had been an analyst with ESPN the last three years. Majerus coached Utah to the NCAA tournament final in 1998, losing to Kentucky, and stepped down in January 2004 due to health reasons. He accepted the USC position in December 2004, only to change his mind three days later. Last year, he turned down an offer to become an assistant coach with the Nuggets. Majerus led Utah to 10 NCAA appearances in 15 seasons. He also has coached at Ball State and Marquette, and with the Milwaukee Bucks as an assistant. Personality test: Majerus was introduced at a news conference yesterday and thought his appearance "eerily" similar to the school's gnome-like Billiken mascot. He joked that his last name means "sausage eater," and said there was no chance of squeezing into the jersey that's standard for such ceremonies. Cupboard hardly bare: The Billikens have four returning starters, and Majerus will build around junior forward Tommie Liddell and junior guard Kevin Lisch. With apologizes to Morrison, do we ride this out and wait for the Big East to fold, as Majerus thinks it will? He mentioned something about that yesterday at the press conference. I would rather have us wait and see what the likes of Villanova, Seton Hall, St. John's, Georgetown and ND do, considering they are not Big East Football schools. I'd much rather get them in a league than play in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Knowing that Kevin Lisch and Tommy Liddell are not Glen Davis and Tyrus Thomas and cannot take our team to the Final Four, and since the door has been locked on recruiting and our scholarship offers, do we go into the season with little or no expectations? Take into consideration that while Majerus is a great coach and has coached some of the greats, he has never coached a bunch of projects like Bryce Husak, Adam Knollmeyer and Dustin McGuire. Especially Husak. What are we going to get out of him this year? This is exactly like the movie "Stripes," with Majerus playing the role of Sgt. Hulka. Lisch and Liddell are like Murray and Harold Ramis because they kind of have things put together and are wiser, older guys. Husak is John Candy -- a guy who wants to be a lean, mean, fighting machine. Also likes mud wrestling due to his Iowa roots. McGuire is Judge Reinhold because he is the timid one who really has no idea what he's doing. I can't come up with any more analogies. Sorry. But let's give a round of applause to our new bestest friend and big toe, Uncle Majerus.
