Virginia has become the first state to enact a law that allows the school itself to pay its players:

Virginia law allows schools to pay athletes for NIL - ESPN

Click on the link and listen to Tim Legler's take on it all.  He is saying everything I have said or believed ---- and it starts with calling it pay-for-play.  He also talks about how it's likely the ruination OF sport as we knew it and echoes the same thing Nick Saban is saying about the term "student-athlete" being a MYTH.

Unlike a statement in the article, I do not believe this gets us closer to a federal or national solution because i believe in what cgeldmacher is saying about pending law suites and continued issues going forward.  The UVa AD believes the school has "an obligation to maintain elite athletics program at UVa."  This law will force most other states to do the same to "keep up with the Jones."  Schools will then have to increase their operating budgets to cover the new cost of NIL line in their bottom lines.  It might or migh tnot take the payment plans out of the hands of rabid boosters.  Virginia has stepped in where the NCAA continues to fail.  But I don't know how the NCAA can succeed when at every turn, they are rebuked by a court case as cgeldemacher states.

They continue to call these NIL deals when we all know the reality is simply pay-for-play.  I think these scholarship players ought to pay their own way through school now.  They seem to have enough money on hand.

Very important thing buried in the article:

“They both said they do not yet know with certainty how their schools would interpret Title IX laws when figuring out how to equitably share NIL opportunities with men and women athletes.”

They are about to get slapped hard in the face about the realities of Title IX.

  2. I look forward to the twelve year college basketball veteran trying to hang on long enough to become fully vested in the state’s pension system if we ever go to employment contracts.  That will just make you feel all warm inside.  You can’t put a limit on eligibility years when talking about an employment contract.  Try to do that and you will lose in court.

Are they improving? I see the same stuff from last year. The same cartoonish logo, the same uninspired half assed attempts at "fund raising". The lack of responsiveness, the lack of visibility. The only thing that's new is the website.

When you want people to give you money, at least have the decency to acknowledge you have received their RSVP to what you are billing as a private event.  That type of thing should be automatic.

    What's a PR nightmare?

Did you get an email or just see the X post on the message board?

I don't use X (Twitter) either but my understanding from that X post (in this thread) and the email, it gives me the 5Ws.  If you want to go send a RSVP to the email address given then go.

    Who: Donors/Season Tix holders

What: BVF event with Coach Schertz

    When: 16 April 5-6:30PM

    Where: MAC West

Why: Coach will outline vision for SLU and NIL

    RSVP to [email protected]

    Seems Straightforward to me.

It appears to me Billikenbooster and Young Charles have tried to RSVP and has received no confirmation back.  The X post makes it clear that it is a private event.  I assume they don't want to show up and be turned away.

Has anyone tried to register for this?

I have emailed info et al and have yet to get a reply.

They don't have the event listed on the BVF website or any posts about on their Instagram account either.  So if you aren't on X and following their X account, you don't know this event is happening.  I guess that doesn't matter if they are not getting back to people about how to attend.

If BVF was a real business, it would have went bankrupt because of incompetency.

It does look like they are getting ready to role out a tier membership program, finally, that gets you different stuff depending on the donation.  Hopefully when it goes live it will have a recurring donation option to encourage more people to join the different tiers by spreading out the payments.  That would ultimately raise a lot more money.  You can't get to it through the website yet, but you can see what it looks like now by clicking this direct link:

I really think that Avila in a different system would be okay at best.  He’s a great passer and a really good shooter.  But he’s thriving in an offense that accents his strong points.  If he played as a traditional big down low like most teams run he would struggle.  He’s slow and needs to bulk up to play down there.  Plus adding the extra 25-35 feet he’d have to run each trip up and down the floor he’d be gassed a lot faster.  I really hope he comes here because he fits the system so well.  He’ll have a hard time finding a system that fits him like this one.

Most teams wouldn't play him as a traditional big man, but as a stretch 4 on offense.  He would be damn good in that role.  That said, this system fits his talents best.

With Jimerson starting the season at 25 years old,  is he the oldest or one of the oldest Billikens to ever play?

I think Abdur Rahim Al Mattin who was a JUCO transfer early in the Grawer era was 30 in his final season.  I could be off on that because I was a kid then, but I have always remembered hearing that. I think he served 8 years in the Army before he decided to play college basketball.

Not if the student-athlete is physically present in the United States, no.  The location of the transaction, employer is irrelevant.  Pay them in the off season when they return to Melbourne.

it is legal if the student is not actively working for the money. Student visa holders can legally earn royalties and passive income while in school.

There are plenty of work arounds to the student visa issue in NIL. They can get paid for events done in their home country. They can get paid for any sort of work done while on a foreign MTE or offseason trip. They can get earn passive income from merchandise sales. Its more a timing issue than anything.

They can even get paid for the use of their name, image and likeness back home during the season.  Just the whole transaction needs to take place in the other country. Say a kid from Australia is getting paid by an Australian company for the use of his NIL back home and the check is deposited in the kid’s Australian bank account, that wouldn’t violate his visa.  He just can’t be doing work in the US for that money.

That is interesting because it sounded from at least one source that Nitu was going to stay loyal to Graves, because he was the lead recruiter. I am confident in Turnbull.

The fact that they had Pikaar in for a visit makes me think that Nitu is less than certain

Anywhere from top of the a10 to legit P5 numbers

Yes, what would have been an elite spend last year among the P5 won't be elite next season, but will still be really good P5 spending. 247 had a good article Wednesday talking about P5 average spends last season and expected average spends next season.

Surely the whole point of this board is to humor MBMs with numbers like these?

I didn't throw the specific number amount out there because I'm not sure what those dollar amounts actually include. For instance I don't believe the higher number (it was crazy) has any chance of being accurate if we are just talking about what the guys will get this coming season, but it could very well be accurate if we are talking about the combined value of all the seasons included in the deals they sign.  I have a feeling the second number might be right when it comes to the total value of the compensation of what the guys might get next season, but I don't know how much of that is actual cash and how much of it includes the value of other stuff included in the deal for things like car leases.  So if you throw an actual dollar amount out there people might take it for something it actually isn't supposed to be without the proper context of what it all includes.

Better than Reed? I’m hoping for a slightly better Rob Loe.

Avila is going to be an All-American by the time he is done.  Not many bigger Rob Loe fans than me, but Avila is already light years ahead of Rob at his best.

I hope you're right on our "targets" which I assume we have an inside track on because our coach was their coach last season.

As you read this next part, know that I love SLU, I have 2 degrees from SLU, and one degree from Texas. When my children ask me if SLU played Texas in a sport who would I cheer for? I answer SLU without hesitation.

SLU does not exist in the same universe as Texas money.  If the only factor was $ and Texas really wanted the player we're not likely winning that battle.

We have a collective that until recently didn't have a way to donate online or return inquiries. Texas has Collectives, plural.

SLU is upper middle class in the sports world in terms of support. The paying of the buyout, new coach and assumed promised NIL fund increase are all very good and can take this program where we want to go.

I don't know what to tell you.  I don't think you really understand how much some of SLU"s boosters are really worth.  These aren't the type of people that will be making NIL spends through a collective website. This isn't just Chaifetz that has stepped up.  I have heard two different numbers for what will be available for SLU to spend on NIL this season.  The lower of those two numbers would have put SLU among the very elite of P5 basketball NIL spending last season.  Will Texas spend more this coming season than SLU will?  Sure they could, I am sure they have the means to and they probably will.  Also just because the money is available that doesn't mean SLU will spend every last penny of it.  That still doesn't mean SLU won't be able spend just as much or more than Texas when it comes to what they are willing to spend on a specific player both programs are targeting.  Being willing to spend that money doesn't even mean that SLU would land that player.  There are many kids that would rather play for Texas at the end of the day.

They can't compete.  But I didn't see anything regarding Avila visiting with Larry on Horns247 and they're a really active pay board with moderators/journalists on top of recruiting.

Larry to UT makes sense as he's from Frisco, TX.

I don't see Avila fitting into Rodney Terry's offensive system (or lack there of).

SLU isn’t losing any of their targets because they can’t compete with the dollars offered.  That doesn’t mean they will get everyone they target, but they won’t lose out because they couldn’t compete financially.  Plus, why does everyone forget SLU has their own oil money?

If we land the majority of the ISU players, why would we expect anything other than to have a NET similar to what they had last year? They had a NET of 28 last year, only Dayton would have been higher. Not sure why you'd sell SLU short by lumping us in with teams 2-4 in the A-10 that had NETs in the 70-90 range.

It is crazy.  The guys who evaluate talent for a living have us as top 25 team next season based on getting the majority of the ISU players, but people on here think only top 4 in the conference. If we end up with a roster similar to what the one suggested was possible, that team should be the conference favorite.
