  1. If you told me a month ago that the most frequent names mentioned in a thread about the SLU coaching search included Blake Ahearn, Floyd Irons, Bruce Weber, Kevin Slaten, and Frank Cusumano: giphy.gif?cid=6c09b952qsnsf1q1gh4xs99fpk

Separate conversations with Cusamano and Trilly.

Two people whose knowledge differs vastly.

I would love to see Schertz bring his rotation with him. It's a tall order, though. As soon as their names hit the portal, those guys are going to get offers. SLU probably can't match or beat all of them.

Seems like the most common realistic number is 2. Odom brought 2 guys to VCU, Sprinkle brought 2 guys to Utah State, just to use a couple examples we saw this season. Kelsey is bringing 2 to Louisville.

Maybe we should hope for 5 or 6, expect 2, and maybe we'll get something in between.

Fracture, and yes... the Cincinnati coach was a POS and the pitcher that hit Moore just like him.  They cried about a bat flip from Nouweg on his HR Friday, and then talked the umpires into ejecting Moore on his after the next AB.  Watch any SEC/ACC game...

Then when Moore came back Sunday he was pelted twice.  They threw behind Sitzman.

This is after the utter douchebag Cincy coach had a player steal home in the 9th Saturday when the game was in hand... Hendrickson had put in reserves everywhere, had a 3rd string catcher and a pitcher who had recorded no innings.  Hope their season ends abruptly and with prejudice.

So Moore's injury was caused by the HBPs?

So you think the athletics department should promote SLU athletic teams? Radical…

The individual teams generally do, but days like this make me wonder why no one is like "Hey SLU fans, there's a ton available to stream today..." in a way that isn't one-offs from every program and more like something making a bigger deal of a busy SLU athletic program.

  5. This thread seemed like the best catch-all for the fact that we have 5 teams playing today:

-WBB is at Fort Wayne in the WNIT Super 16 tonight at 6:00
-Baseball hosts Rhody again at 2:00
-Softball has a doubleheader at GW at 11:00 and 1:00
-Men's Tennis hosts Butler at 1:00
-And the Track & Field team is spread out among 5 different events this weekend - at Wash U, Stanford, San Francisco State, Texas, and Texas State.

Streams are available for WBB, baseball, softball, and the Texas Relays - ESPN+ for the first three, Longhorn Network for the last one.

Would be nice to see the award-winning athletic department promote such a big day. That's a ton of stuff for your fans to stream on a slow Friday afternoon at work.

Again, like you said, he might be a decent enough guy. He just looks like that.

The money ISU can pay Schertz isn’t even the biggest reason Schertz wants out of ISU.  They aren’t going to be able to keep the team together to run it back again even if Schertz would stay.  Schertz knows that.  They don’t have the NIL money or the facilities needed for that.  That can’t all be fixed before the transfer window closes. That is the reason he has determined he is leaving.

Doing a bit of a deeper dive on ISU - it is a mess... No president and No AD, plus a lot of budget problems.

These are the main reasons he won't be returning to ISU, no matter what. And that's before the salary difference, facilities, etc.

No one has mentioned Williford.  Has he requested out of his NLI?  I know nothing about his situation nor his basketball skills.

Nothing yet. It is worth noting that he had an offer from Indiana State, though, as I think @billikenfan05 pointed out the other day.

Schertz has a proven record of success at the college level. He has 4 national championships. Ahearn hasn’t even coached a college game.
Schertz coached the #1 offense in the country. Ahearn did not.
Schertz is on most everyone’s short list. He is a hot commodity. Ahearn is only on a few boosters short list.
There’s no comparison between what the 2 bring to the table. None. So why do you think Ahearn deserves Schertz money? He doesn’t.

I mean, I agree with all of this, which is why I'd hire Schertz and not even interview Ahearn.

I just don't think the dollars would ultimately be as far apart as you had said. My reason is more that SLU would overpay Ahearn - i.e. "This is the range we pay our head coach" - and not that Schertz would be underpaid relative to our competition.

    Thanks for asking.

I tried to find my response to ABomb when he basically asked why I hadn't jumped on his bandwagon.  I can't find it, but I will paraphrase:

I don't care who the coach of the Billikens is.  I don't care how much he makes.  (Apparently some posters would have been satisfied if Ford had made $250,000.  I never understood "We aren't getting our money's worth.")

I don't care who the AD is and I don't care how much he/she makes.

I don't care who the public address announcer is, and I don't care if the band plays at the games.  I don't care what the price of beer is at Chaifetz.

Basketball is entertainment.  I want to be entertained when I watch a basketball game.  I want my adrenaline to rush.  Hopefully the Billikens win, but if the game is a good contest, I am satisfied no matter who wins.  The Fordham loss was a good example of that.  Who wasn't entertained with that game?  Basketball doesn't feed any of STL's homeless or impact the crime rate in STL.  It's entertainment.

There are countless coaches that can/could be in front of the Billiken bench.  Some of course would do better than others.  But it is a krap shoot.  You never know the results until you have the results in hand.  And due to the NIL and portal, the way to basketball success has changed dramatically.  Ford's coaching methods didn't change over his tenure.  He didn't de-emphasize defense, as some think he did.  He didn't get the portal right.  He didn't get the players he needed.  I watch the IU Hoosiers, and Woodson missed on the portal too. He didn't bring in enough shooters. There is no formula for success with this new chaos.

There is no sure thing on the new hire.  If the NIL money isn't there, then it REALLY doesn't matter who the coach is.  A buyout number of $7 to $10 million has been floated on this board.  Likely that doesn't include any buyouts for the rest of the staff.  So who is supplying that money, and how much will be left over for NIL?  No one knows, but to think there will be a surplus is likely naive.  I am not increasing my donation.

I simply find it counterproductive to get emotionally tied up in the search for a new coach.  It doesn't matter what I think nor what any of the MBM's think about a new coach.  Of course, posting opinions and desires is fine.  I don't have a candidate that if not selected, will prevent me from following the Billikens.  Whatever happens will happen, and I will give the new regime time to produce, time to give me quality entertainment.

Thanks. I was just curious based on some recent posts. I think you have a much different approach to fandom than most people around here.

I would say that for someone with your perspective, Schertz should be an excellent hire. Offensive minded coach whose teams score a ton = high entertainment value. And he's coming from a school in Indiana.

That's basically how we all operated when we were 10 years old and fandom was a lot more fun and carefree back then.  I certainly didn't worry about how Rich Grawer produced whatever results he produced.  I'm not even sure I knew who the coach was back then.  I certainly wasn't making mental progress reports of the athletic director, who I didn't even know existed.

Being an adult has turned most of us into concern trolls.  We stress out endlessly over things we have no control over.  We demonize men that we barely know.  It's unfortunate.  But it happens on every sports message board.  That's the price of testosterone.

    What on earth?

I’m all in for Schertz and I’m not saying we grab Ahearn, but if it’s going to cost us $2 million to get Schertz are we better off paying someone like Ahearn $300k and use the rest for players? Add what they get from everyone else and you can buy the best roster in the A-10. While Schertz doesn’t appear to need a ton of talent to win in his system, he would not have won the A-10 with the talent we had this year.

Where are these figures coming from?

I would expect SLU to pay either of them close to the same amount, and it would be somewhere in between those numbers. Schertz makes $365,000. I don't know what Ahearn makes but I'm guessing it's comparable. NBA assistants generally make 6 figures, with a pretty wide range depending on role and experience.

Bottom line is neither of them would be a huge savings over the other in terms of salary.

I don't give two shakes on who the next coach is.  I'm certainly not going to lose any sleep over the selection.  I'll give him three years to see what he does.

But I did look up McNeese State's impressive 30-3 record.  Four of those wins were:  College of Biblical Studies, Champion Christian, LeTourneau, and - yes, get this - Mississippi University for Women.  I couldn't find the NET for the Women of Ole Miss.  But yes, Will Wade lead the McNeese Cowboys to a 92-23 drubbing of the Women of Ole Miss.  That likely got him votes for Coach of the Year in the 27th ranked Southland Conference.

They did beat Michigan, but who didn't?

I expect you don't believe me, (I wouldn't believe it either) but here is the link to their schedule.

The best part of Slaten's rant was saying if SLU had recruited "better" Troy Slaten would have been our starting 2 guard in the 00s playing next to Mckinney and David Lee.

    Did he really say this?!

Man, that guy hasn't changed a bit from the abusive sports dad getting kicked out of the gym during his son's games.

Troy was a one-dimensional HS player who could shoot and had really weird form. He went to Arkansas State, never played (the coach's fault, I'm sure), and transferred to UMSL. He's the 39th leading scorer in UMSL history. The idea that he'd be playing alongside Lee and McKinney is laughable. Set aside the fact that neither of them ever wanted to go to SLU, but if Troy were going to get a scholarship on a team with those two, he would be the 13th guy by a landslide and lucky to get garbage time minutes. Not someone who shares the court with stars.

I missed some of it, did he give a reason for not liking the idea of Schertz? I heard him say that he didn't want some young up-and-comer generically, but Schertz is not that.

Nothing too specific. Mostly just that the "Indiana State coach doesn't move the needle much for me" but he didn't seem to know a whole lot about Schertz in particular.

I feel good about how it went. Feel like I made my points.

Hopefully people can go back and listen later if they're interested (I know nothing about 590 or its app or whatever).

    What would those be?

I don’t have those misgivings, but I can be swayed  Drew should have got the job last time.

Last time he moved up a level, he crashed HARD.

He also seems to be kind of a weirdo. Cycles through assistants quickly. Can sell a program but doesn't seem to build long-term relationships with players. I think he's a specific flavor and fits at certain places culturally (Valpo, GCU) that might not translate everywhere. Same for his brother - Baylor is the absolute perfect fit for him as the highest level program where he could thrive.

But Homer still lives in STL, right? Not surprising certain local media figures are pushing Bryce.

It's not my job she cares about. We have a 4-year-old who is now at 5+ days with strep throat and it's been a nightmare to deal with - not eating, not sleeping, up coughing all night, breaking out in rashes, maintaining a 100+ fever. Antibiotics seemed to work for a bit and then her symptoms returned. So when I have to head to my studio (basement corner) to hit record for a few hours, she's dealing with that (and a 7-year-old) solo. The timing for this couldn't be worse.
