  1. basketball on our local radio is exciting because you can't get coverage on every block so never no what will happen; actually the play of IV and BH was exciting although clumsy at times; kind of like watching a featherweight title match after heavy weight pre-lims; if you are looking for finesse watch the NBA and give up the rivaries of college basketball where everyone expects to win at home
  2. They did a call in program again, today featuring that exciting topic of why the Bills should play UNI and SIU to save on bus fare; they actually offered that as a good reason. Don't they understand that SLU wants to be seen as an elitist school? Temple, Rhode Island, x, etc. smack of influental academia. Want to send your kids to graduate school at S. Fla or SiU? Or do you want them to go to GW and work for a politician? When we were in Conference USA, the presidents' meetings had as much to do about trading scholars after graduation as they did whidn basketball programs were to be emulated.
  3. He seems to be an echo; he seldom actually interviews anyone or has fresh material; he seems like a pretty nice guy but he often is writing about the same thing as another writer; I am surprised the PD can afford to publish back up articles; but I guess you have to fill out sports pages as we only have 4 page average in the business section; they could save some money getting rid of the Saturday folding machine. I think the Chicago paper does that so people can read on the train on the dailies. Why do we do it Saturday, only? Is it a test to see if we can get the right sections out before the fish stink?
  4. this is distracting and I know there are rules about the band not playing at certain key moments; we have been hurt by this and I sense our players may have gotten use to it; but it is just as tasteless as the hurry up and leave messages left over from the Laurie days "which was a really big joke when he stopped cleaning the building to save money and we were the biggest group of fans since he scuttled the Blues
  5. I don't follow them but had the impression they were less than .500
  6. it works for Cincinatti, Syracuse, Notre Dame: these guys get paid by the sound bite. Not quite "that's a winner" by Jack Buck but it is certainly something he must be working to develop. Can you imagine if you practised saying Southwest Missouri State instead of SMSU and someone passed a law so you only had to say Missouri State and people could still understand you. On the other hand how many alums live in the St. Louis metro area versus how many people live in the St. Louis area who could buy a ticket if they felt an association to the team. You wouldn't have to be Catholic or know what a Jesuit was or what a Billiken is to go to a game.
  7. if they notch it up next year we should be all right; but DP can't be anything except a role player off the bench if he can't bring the ball up alone or score. LM makes few errors but with starters like him we are not going to win the A10. I really would like to see us 8 deep; can you imagine what Soderberg can do if he athletes like GW?
  8. it's not like the Cardinals who signed Danny Jackson and got an inning out of him in 3 seasons and Kip wells who may or may not be recovered from an operation to get blood to flow in his pitching arm; we had a real athlete in Horace Dixon ( you can't tell if a kid can study or not ) I think the coach wouldn't play guys like Horace and OBI beacuse it would mess with the team to let someone flunking out of school lead on the basketball court. I blame the recruiting on two things-one the coaching budget for assistants and 2) BS, yes it appears that he has surrounded himself with controllable assistants who may or may not be good recruiters; if Jamal Walker, who is a top 10 SLU BB alum can not turn the tide; then, maybe in a short while we will know whether they need a new leader-with charisma that is not threatened by his own staff. So it is either a budget problem or a head coach problem.
  9. I'd be in a fog if DP was bringing the ball down at the end of a game where I just had a thumping and two freshman back up my point guard until he has the ball back where it was in-bounded and has a 10 second call on him for a lost ball and then the home team sinks a meaningless shot to extend their lead for no reason. I'd be mad at DP if it wasn't for the fact that we had 4 other players on the court who did not turn around to help out-as seen on the radio-thanks to the non existent P-R media, etc. are we paying someone to get this team coverage? It is almost as if we were not supposed to win this season and so they did not choose to have TV coverage.next season let's vote to have boosters sharp, loyal, recruiters who are aluni, other stuff real universities have
  10. Whoa Nellie! At this point in the miracle Romar season where SLU ran the board in the tournament to get to the NCAA's we were just as dissappointed. I say let them finish the season before you cremate the coach. BS has coached much better this year. We are still a team with only three legitimate A10 players IV, TL, and KL and one definitely has had the sophomore jinx when it comes to injuries. TL has been amazingly adept at staying away from the hackers and maulers in this league. He is deceptively fast and avoids defenders. I we could go 19-13 would we consider that as good as the Grawer 18-12 year; remember Grawer only had 3 teams that won 20 or more out of what 10 or 11 seasons. Grawer's final year 5-23 was a disgrace and we finally spent big money to get Spoonhauer; after Spoon's first great season he flirted with leaving SLU in the media and it killed what little recruiting interest the kids had in the old man. Soderberg seems like he is growing, learning to coach and teach and getting some respect from the team; he may be all we want in two years...or not.
  11. are you saying Luke Meyer would be a legitimate Power Forward if he played in the MVC? He has had a nice year but takes advantage of the double and triple teams on Ian; he does not attract attention of the defence so they collapse onto Ian. IV can change the course of the game if not molested; Luke would have to average 16 points a game and be able to leap for rebounds instead of collect the ones that bounce his way while flat footed to be a real power forward against A10 competition. And i think he plays up to his ability. We get 100% from LM and I respect that a lot.
  12. Is it immediately after hs state championships? Can you take recruits to Cardinals games as part of their visits-can the coaches do that
  13. we also got pottery as a major showing the University might finally be getting it; the saddest note of the sixties was when the art school was torn down on Grand and replaced with grass; Heinrich gave me hope that someday we could have a great PE majar combined with the physical therapy and nursing programs that would rival programs like University of Illinois that have many PHD types in their athletic program; then you see real progress in all the athletic programs; when I went to Illinois all students were required to take 4 semesters of PE take a look around and see what would happen in a world where everyone could bowl, play tennis, swim, and golf, or take fencing, etc. This is not a joke. I really believe you need to develop individual and team sports in addition to Philosophy, the sciences, literature and art. University of Illinois had great fraternity rivalries in water polo, football, basketball, etc. Try taking a full course load, getting exercise and playing bridge or gin rummy for 20 hours a week. If you have to work part time to pay tuition it would hardly leave time to get in trouble. College is your last chance to lead a balanced life-after that work sucks up 40 plus hours a week from most of us
  14. what great fun we are going to have watching him and KL play together for another year or two; I think he can be better than Larry Hughes if he stays a while longer and LH was lucky he did not get hurt in college or the NBA and his skills the first two years out it looked like he was on the edge. I hope TL can be better. I was an Esider and we have seen lots of guys go early with no or lttle college and they crash and burn. TL can be a role model for doing it the right way, the team way and he can teach kids stay and learn; stay and develop into complete ball players and be men when you get your chance; someone else noted above the NBA likes him because he is unselfish-can you imagine and unselfish NBA? NO. I can't get there even on this thread
  15. thanks for catching the typo; I'll put my glasses back on so i can spellcheck you get lazy when you use applications with an automated speller and of course if you want to watch guards play the smaller schools are filled with talent that can run and shoot; but basketball is meant to have 5 different sets of skills in its most ideal form -W.C. Fields "I'd rather be in Philadelphia" is still true today. My sentiments that is why SLU would be going backwords to play more MVC teams the athleticism and size of the A10 opponents made us all doubt we could win these last two games-someone a row behind me at the GW game said after warm ups we have 3 players that could make their team and A10 coaches have taken us apart in a lot of second halves-this is a step up
  16. of the talent we have; in the past we had too many coaches like Grawer who never improved Monroe Douglas or Melvin Robinson; I was happy to see the article in the Post today where Sodaberg finally has a talented player who is willing to be coached and Sodaberg is finally willing to give some insight into what he can offer. Too often MVC and SLU teams only valued guards and made 3's and 4's play out of position because we couldn't recruit enough bigs because of our lack of coaching experience with bigs.
  17. give me a break next you'll say Sloan was a talent like Monroe Douglas, Gray grew 6 inches to be about 6-6 or 6-8 guard by senior year; AB was a grind player-a great grind player-if he had a jump shot he'd still be in the NBA he could jump from the key to the basket and a man among boys on rebounding. A truly great player to watch but AB was no Bob Ferry or Easy Ed they were the real thing-MVP and All Americans-AB was Wes Unseld not a Billiken with no jump shot.
  18. according to Rammer the announcers have a pool as to whether the guest will go over or under 1:12 length of finish; I wonder what else they bet on; like whether the refs will even up the fouls by the end of the game; does anyone know what they pay these guys they are pretty bad and we never seem to get the kind of breaks we used to get at home; although I must say I thought they were particulary bad in favor of no one in the GW game
  19. Kevin Footes who played for Grawer was a juco transfer from Univ of Kansas City before it was division I-he was a wonderful 6-8 or 6-9 slender guard who could take control of a game; he played street ball and Grawer never used his talents well; he started then sat at the end of the bench-I doubt "sponsor of Kevin Footes" even knows where he is today
  20. LM reminded me so much of the not quite talented or fast enough over hyped coach's favorites of past years. Grawer always favored these grinds to the talented types like Kevin Footes, Mel Robinson. or way back to Eugene Moore-those opposites who coaches find it hard to play because in practise or game they almost never break a sweat-TL would qualify if he did not trash mouth Biggs laying on the floor with his fly by ya put back dunk of the GW game- I digress LM has been steady and cool and has benefitted from the doubles and triples hanging on IV-what has convertewd me is his blocking ou on offense and defence-especially for rebounds-ever wonder why we seem to have 2-3 guards rebounding-the bigs are taking out the opponents bigs on many occasions Keep up the good work Luke has won me over-other than Luke seems coach always plays the fastest man we have available
  21. we had more steals in this game than all season; and I would say this is the best Brad ever coached as far as giving the other team something to worry about-too bad DM or AK couldn't have had more chances but we sure had the best depth of any game. Do you think Lisch thought he could throw that three pointer up from anywhere even though he had 6 seconds left. He sure looked great-his steals set the tone and LM added to that tone. I'll want to see the stats
  22. TL does stay away from the maddening crowd until the moment he strikes like a Cobra?
  23. if we could just teach the guards to not pass the ball below his shoulders. He has size and talent but he struggles to get down the court, wisely the guards are waiting for him before they set up and he is making a real effort. He can do one thing better than JJ, Ak, IV grow to be seven feet two-if the coaches would just teach him to look for the ball on rebounds-he has learned the blocking out part
  24. Vtime I don't know if you got to the last game but DB has a real problem with turnovers-passing and dribbling-I hope next year that stage of his development improves but if not you are right with everyone hacking and undercutting Lisch who plays with abandon we need a third guard who can pass and score. It was nice to see IV rbounding in the last game.LM probably had his worst game of the year.
