If we match Travis’ over pay for any coach that’s a huge mistake. Maybe for May and Kelse a raise of $800k but no one else. We need NIL $$’s .
Do the players compete with the coaching staff for funding, or do they draw from separate budgets?

IF Chris May is allowed to even communicate, much less be involved with a third mbb hire, SLU really is run top to bottom by even bigger morons. This is like soccer coach hiring 2.0 with him, he will act like he’s getting all this big interest in job to pump up leadership, guys will use SLU to negotiate for better jobs and move on, get to around the 7/8th choice when finally a donor like Kavanaugh tells him hire Kalish. Which is and was last thing guy wanted to do bc he was connected locally and he can’t control him. Guy is so insecure and has a huge ego, which I don’t get at all, that it’s all about HIS survival and keeping control. Plus he’s profoundly stupid on top of everything. I’m a broken record, I get it, I can see it being annoying, but I can’t say it enough until guy is fired, he’s bad, bad, bad news and has gotta go for slu to move forward!!!!
Feel better now?

If a coach's system can succeed without standout athletes, that's a good thing. Expands the pool of players from which he can recruit.
Sounds like the definition of the Majerus years.

You’re questioning his skill set compared to what we currently have? Seriously?

It is unlikely that TF and his coaching staff forgot all about the principles of basketball defense last fall as they were preparing for this season. More likely that these stats are a result of a combination of no inside defensive presence, freshman bigs who are guaranteed to take time to develop, a rebuilding year with questionable NIL resources and an improved A10 conference ( #8 in the country vs #11 last year).

I’m sure the guys work their tails off in practice. We have been competitive against teams with our level of talent.
We held our own (and then some) for the first 10 minutes. Dayton then woke up and methodically dismantled us - basically better than we are at every position. And unless I am wrong, Dayton didn’t have a single Senior on the court. Our coaching staff has not forgotten that defense is important. We simply do not have an adequate inside presence at this time. The only way for our younger bigs to genuinely improve is by giving them lots of meaningful game playing time - something that TF has never done and which has produced the results we are seeing.

TF’s short leash on Stef and Bruce made no sense in the second half. Our 2 freshman bigs needed more playing time against a future NBA forward last night. Practicing against each other is not enough.

In years past the Senior Night ceremony was always before the game.
Crowd had some pregame energy, and the visiting team politely acknowledged the departing SLU players.None of the above if the ceremony is postgame.

Don’t forget to factor in the cumulative loss of ticket and merchandise revenue over the next couple of years as this program continues to sink.
All of these help to buffer the buyout. -
Do the players think that their future NIL income only depends on moments of flashy offense? They are acting like defense doesn’t matter any more.
-
SLU and their boosters have failed to adequately support the athletes?
We have the highest paid coach in the conference, first class facilities, and very respectable fan support.
Do we think that higher player compensation would have made this year’s team play better defense?
-
Medley is a freshman. Give the guy a little slack.
With the exception of Yuri (and Larry Hughes, who could do everything), when was the last time SLU had a freshman point guard who was a true difference maker? -
With all the anticipated major structural changes coming to college sports, I would think that veteran college coaches would be at a relative disadvantage.
Going forward, it might make more sense to pursue a current coach in the professional ranks - ability to handle paid athletes, short term rather than long term commitments, player budgets, etc. -
The private schools and their fan base will feel the pinch more than the state schools. Athletes at state schools will be employees of the state - salary and benefits will be covered by the taxpayers.
We will all be picking up the tab for these kids, while being asked to assist with the BVF.

Sad. May is pathetic
If TF’s salary was 1.5 million/year, middle of the pack in the A10, and his buyout was only 6 million, would we still think May is pathetic?

Our defense may look good enough to the coaching staff in practice - problem is, they are guarding players who can’t generate high level offense.
-
There was dysfunction with our embarrassing loss to UNI at home in the first round of the 2022 NIT. Yuri or not, we were simply not competitive in that game.

In the current offense, GJ has to run his ass off just to get the ball in his hands. He then tries to get a contested 3 point shot off, often from extra long range. When he gets open 3 point looks (like Davidson was getting all night), he is very effective.
Unless and until the rest of the team wakes up on offense, this is what we have and what every opponent will expect.
-
Statistics on assists can be misleading. Great passes don’t count when your teammates miss the majority of their short, medium and long shots (as we seem to be doing lately).
-
What happens when ‘unlimited transfers’ meets 13 maximum scholarships? Will we see teams accumulating high level walk-ons, using NIL money to pay tuition to attend the school?
-
The only way to have a truly level playing field is to allow every team to participate. Give the higher ranked teams a bye or two, add a couple of rounds and 10 days to the Tournament.
Probably see more sustained fan interest nationally.billiken_roy likes this -

The following may be a take that is not very popular, but I don't think Ford was a bad hire...
He got the team in the Dance in just his third year following the Crews dumpster fire; then the following 3 seasons, he had 3 Top 50 ish teams (I don't want to rehash bad luck v. excuses v. self-inflicted wounds) but the bottom line is not too many coaches in SLU history stacked recruiting classes and built rosters like that over a four-year period.
BUT.... BUT I also think that in the new NIL/Portal wild west era, things have clearly headed in the wrong direction. His time has probably run its course and a change is probably for the best.
In conclusion, because it's time for a change now, does not necessarily mean it was a bad hire then... both things can be true.
TF generated legitimate buzz when he was announced. He brought big time coaching experience, media skills, etc. In other words, a similar package to several nominees on the growing list of coaching possibilities posted so far.
