  1. John Brandenburg didn't have a very good junior season. He also had three ankle injuries and some other injury I can't remember off the top of my head.

He was definitely a better player as a sophomore, when he could have been the player of the year in the Metro Catholic Conference. (That went to JB's teammate, Sean Kowal.)

The kid is far from a finished product, but he could be very good in college. He's got skills that a lot of players his size and his age — he's basically a year younger than his classmates — just don't have.

I think Brandenburg would be a good fit at SLU because Majerus has a strong resume for working with and developing big guys. Brandenburg is a smart kid (30 on his ACT) and when he figures it out, he's going to be very good.

I've seen him when he's been good, bad and even in eighth grade when he didn't care much about playing basketball but did it anyway.

  2. >Interesting thought - what is happening with Kramer? One of

    >the recruiting sites only list SLU as his only offer and

    >since he is not playing AAU ball this summer - wonder if

    >that decision is causing some issues now - what options do

    >you think he will have? I agree he is not coming to SLU -

    >kind of like the Winfield situation when Grawer was let go.

Kramer is good enough to play somewhere.

Obviously when Brad gets a new job the family will move wherever. I'm guessing that Kramer will walk on to whatever team employs Brad.

  3. Also, don't forget Thompson was on the same St. Louis Eagles team last summer with Scott Suggs, John Brandenburg, Jesse Perry, Kramer Soderberg and Torres Roundtree.

I don't know how close Thompson is with those other guys — especially considering he chose not to play with the Eagles this summer — but there's still a connection there.

  4. >If you are saying Suggs can play like Brewer

    >then he will be quite an addition to whatever college he

    >decides to go. Corey Brewer was a super college player and

    >should be a heckuva pro.

You don't have to believe me on this. The fact that Florida offered him a scholarship and really wants him should speak volumes for the kind of prospect Suggs is.

(Brewer played in the Shootout here as a senior. He was on an awful high school team, but you could see he had a nice all-around game.)

  5. >km, if the whole basis for the aau guys hardon is about the

    >slu coaches continuing to recruit around them and now we got

    >a commit from an eagle where possibly the same thing has

    >happened, do you really think all is well with the aau

    >folks? that would seem to me to be another example of going

    >around them.

What exactly do you think the "AAU" coaches' role in the recruiting process is?

Does Majerus have to kneel down and kiss the rings of the coaches and ask for permission to recruit their kids?

College coaches recruit kids through their kids, their families and sometimes through their high school coaches — not through summer-league teams.

You have no idea what you're talking about here.

    - Nate

  6. >Nate, I asked this question last week and didn't get an

    >answer---who are the Eagles coaches/staff who played at SLU?

    Bauman,

If you asked me last week, I must have missed it. Sorry about that.

I probably don't know all of the coaches in the system, but Corey Frazier (17s) and Erwin Claggett (15s) are both "head" coaches in the Eagles organization.

I believe John Redden and Matt Baniak are involved in some capacity, as is Scott Highmark.

I could be missing some or some of these guys might not be involved anymore.

    - Nate

  7. I think the perception about summer coaches on here is incorrect and some people are getting a bad rap because of it.

I don't see summer coaches steering kids to one program or another. Some people here may want to add that to the list of why the program wasn't more successful in recent seasons — you can put it underneath cell phones — but I don't see it.

Are you going to say the Eagles made Tyler Hansbrough go to North Carolina or David Lee to Florida? How about the Gateway Basketball Club steering Alex Moosmann to Miami of Ohio instead of accepting a walk-on role at SLU?

Who is the most famous Eagles alum? Where did he go to college?

Guys like Scott Suggs, John Brandenburg, Torres Roundtree and Jesse Perry are going to go wherever they want to go. Teams like the Eagles and Gateway Basketball Club provide many kids with the ability to be seen in front of college coaches from all over the country. If there is any steering going on, its by these clubs trying to use their connections to get kids into colleges and good situations to better their futures.

The St. Louis Eagles, in particular, have several coaches/administrators who PLAYED at St. Louis U. and are season-ticket holders for Billikens games.

And you're going to tell me that those people who try to steer kids away from SLU?

I don't like using the term "AAU" because it's not accurate. But it's a shame that the actions of a couple summer-league coaches (the Myron Piggies of the world) across the country have to negatively reflect on everyone else that try to help kids get free educations through the sport of basketball.

  8. I think Missouri was in good shape with a couple of the local 2008 prospects and might still land some of them, but St. Louis U. has probably caught up with its new hire.

Missouri has Mike Anderson and its new building going for it, along with playing in the Big 12. But the Tigers have a tough road trying to beat Kansas and Texas and the rest of the conference every year. Plus, there are rumblings behind the scenes about people not being happy with the Anderson hire. (I think he'll have success there once he gets his own recruits in place who can play like he likes to play.)

But SLU now has a coach who's had NCAA tournament success, has sent several players to the NBA, will have a new building in a year and now has the expectation that the team will be playing in the NCAA tourney soon and possibly multiple times during the Majerus era.

Both schools have several scholarships to give for the junior class, so it will be interesting to see who ends up where.

  9. >I don't think it was ever official that AT was staying. Just

    >message board talk.

    >

    >According to Courtside, we have a third assistant but he

    >won't give us a name. So, who knows.

Angres was at the Majerus press conference as an assistant coach.

Majerus also mentioned him during the press conference, though on second reference messed up Thorpe's first name.

AT was a key guy to keep around because he has good connections throughout the area. With the timing of the firing/hiring and the spring signing period/recruiting period, keeping AT on the staff was imperative.

He also helps keep that bridge between the two staffs with recruiting the 2008, 2009 and 2010 classes in the St. Louis area. (Contrary to a couple people here saying all was lost in that respect when Soderberg was fired.)

  10. I want to say thank you to everyone who has been supportive of me here.

    I do appreciate it.

Over the past few months I've thought a lot about not posting here anymore, because it sometimes takes up a lot of time and some people could interpret things the wrong way, but the reason I continue to post here is because I think I can provide information to the fans here who wouldn't be able to get that information otherwise.

I know there are people here appreciative of that, so I keep coming back.

I do plan on changing my handle here soon, because I don't like that so many posts on Billikens.com come up when you google my name.

But I will not by bullied by someone with a personal agenda against me into leaving this board.

    Thanks to all.

  11. Tyler is a great kid.

I mentioned here years ago that Griffey was similar to McDonald's All-American Josh McRoberts, who just completed his sophomore season at Duke. I liked the versatility in Griffey's game that allowed him to be a dominant inside player but also handle the ball and shoot it from the perimeter.

In his first two years at Lafayette, I don't think we've seen that total package yet.

But Tyler has been working on getting stronger — he told me the other day he is working with a personal trainer four times a week — and I think in his final two years you'll see someone with a strong all-around game.

There have been a lot of expectations heaped upon him at a young age, but Tyler has handled it well. Like I said, he's a great kid.

  12. >you wanted slu to sign the likes of eckerle, i say mitchell

    >is better. you didnt even present mitchell over the last

    >year. or relephorde (who is way better), or eberhardt (who

    >also is better than your players you suggested the billikens

    >should have been recruiting), or any of the other players

    >that slu was indeed recruiting.

I suggested Eckerle was a good fit for the Billikens because he could back up at both guard positions and be a good ambassador for the program as a quality student and athlete.

Obviously Brad Soderberg thought the same thing or he wouldn't have been trying to get Eckerle to walk on to the team.

I suggested giving him a scholarship if they couldn't get anybody else.

You try to make it sound like I was with Floyd and Demetrious picketing outside West Pine with signs that said SIGN ECKERLE NOW!

    >that isnt sunshine. that is fact. even ss bad as the

    >billikens did this year it appears that mitchell,

    >relephorde, and eberhardt would have been better than

    >eckerle, harrelson and whomever else from west of 270 would

    >have been.

That's not fact. That's your opinion. Just because a kid signs with SLU doesn't make him better than every other basketball prospect out there. You've never even see Relphorde or Eberhardt play, so how you can you say they are better than anybody else?

    >and you cant deny you never once brought up

    >mitchell, relephorde or eberhardt as slu targets or any of

    >the other kids that barely got away which were far better

    >targets than you constantly came here and criticized the

    >billikens for not recruiting.

The first mention of Mitchell on here was someone asking if SLU was recruiting an East St. Louis kid. I didn't think they were. I don't think Mitchell is good enough to contribute there. Surely you remember the thread where I said I liked the potential of Brandon Harrold and Darian Sain more than Mitchell.

    >if you cant see where your "soderberg and staff arent

    >working hard because they arent trying to sign eckerle and

    >harrelson" ##### is negative. so be it.

My posts about "Soderberg and staff aren't working hard" were YOUR interpretations when I posted that over the years I've hardly seen Soderberg out recruiting. YOU were putting those words in my mouth.

    >nate, change your tone and i wont say a word. but if you

    >continue to slam the program with slanted accusations of not

    >working and not chasing your low d-1 kids, i will continue

    >to call that out.

"Change your tone" = only praise the Billikens and blow sunshine or you will trash me, right?

You still have never admitted that I post positive news on here when there is positive news to report. Go back again and look at the post that started yesterday's thread: I posted that Majerus is telling people he plans to schedule top programs to help boost his team's RPI.

If that's being negative, you'll have to also accuse Rick Majerus of being negative toward the program because I was just relaying something that he's told people.

  13. >Nate, I'm not sure what parts of my post you agree and/or

    >disagree with, and I grant you and brian that RM didn't go

    >after/get McD. AA's while at Utah, BUT he has been hired to

    >bring this mid-level program to a new, much higher level.

    >With the resources he's been given, he should be expected to

    >get players such as SS, JB & TG. I would hope we are

    >competing with Big 10 and Big 12 schools, for recruits, NOT

    >Mo. St and SIU-C. If what we are willing to settle for is

    >MVC-type talent, then we shouldn't need to increase the pay

    >level of our ACs.

But there is more talent in this area than people realize.

SS, JB and TG are the biggest names, but there are others who could help get SLU to where everyone wants it to be.

  14. >david, you need to go back and read the string. latsch is

    >just as responsible for any prolonged attacks and he is

    >doing a pretty good job of throwing the mean stuff around as

    >well. in fact, he is the one that is getting personal with

    >his shots. i have stated the facts that his history is to

    >post negative. that is all. he is the one that has come

    >back and belittled me. which i havent stooped to his level

    >of attack.

    Roy,

You're questioning my character, credibility and reputation at every turn on this board.

I've tried to deal with this through private messages, but you will never acknowledge that your biased opinions about me have clouded your judgment regarding everything I post.

  15. >I think many of us are all thinking too small about who RM

    >will be recruiting. I hope he is able to take the program

    >way beyond the Femi J.'s and T. Roundtree's. That is the

    >level of player we would have been satisfied with if BS were

    >still HC. After investing over $1M in a long-term deal for

    >RM, agreeing to significantly up the pay for ACs and just

    >spend more $$$ in general on the program, I think we should

    >be looking at much higher levels of talent for RM to

    >recruit. Not intending to be critical of that level of

    >player, but aren't they really rated as good, mid-major

    >level players? I think Fr. B is expecting more than that

    >and I believe we should be also. If FJ and TR are key

    >pieces of next year's recruiting class then I think RM will

    >have failed to deliver to the level of the expectations we

    >all have today.

I agree with you about some of this.

But I do think if Majerus is able to pull recruits from other areas, he will also need to fill in the roster with whatever local prospects he thinks will fit in.

It's been brought up to me by a couple people, but if you look at the kids Majerus had success with in the past, they weren't recruits that everybody else was going after — he didn't build his teams with McDonald's All-Americans.

On the radio the other day, Michael Doleac said he went to Utah because he didn't have any other options. Now after a nice college career he's been playing in the NBA for several years.

One of the biggest aspects of recruiting, one that people often forget, is evaluation.

Rick Majerus, Brad Soderberg and Chris Lowery can all look at the same kid and have three different opinions.

The evaluation aspect of recruiting is critical. Anybody can look at a McDonald's All-American and realize the kid is a good player — even though some don't have very good college careers — but it takes the best talent evaluators to find the diamonds in the rough.
