  1. If you sell 7K tix at $20 per tix you get $140K - you do not have to pay 75-125K for buy games - you can still get them for 50K and depending on who you get you can probably get someone for 40K. What you have to do is get teams that need be multiple games who can easily bus from MO or IL or Bradley or Normal or Carbondale or you name the place to have them slide into SLU. If buy games do not make $ then why do they all do them?

Yeah, but most of those tickets are already sold to season ticket holders. They would come for a home and home or a buy. And, we aren't generating much interest in buy games...those are the tickets we give away to the boy scouts and local schools. And what is the operating cost on game day....$20k? $30k? Then it was reported we don't get parking or concession revenue. Still don't see them as a big money maker.

I just feel like in this day and age, a buy game is a guaranteed home game against a patsy opponent. It pads your records, gives your fans a home game and get some confidence for your team. No way they are a huge money maker for Saint Louis University. Nothing wrong with that.

  2. Roy, this is ridiculous. I have no desire to attempt to prove things that are unprovable (what will happen to ticket prices if we offer fewer than 18 games is clearly unprovable since it has never happened in the new arena; hint hint maybe they don't want it to drop below 18).

Rather, I am ending my portion of this debate with you content in knowing that 1) Majerus says we need to have a certain amount of buy games for the revenue of the athletic department, 2) all major schools play buy games because it is a significant revenue generator and 3) Harriman left SLU because he got 3X the pay at Nebraska.

If you choose to continue to believe that buy games don't increase revenue then that is your own problem.

I am glad that so many on this board believe that scheduling home and homes with sub 300 RPI teams is the way to go with our future scheduling. Here I thought a trip to the tourney could lead to home and homes with BCS and top mid-major opponents.

I don't know enough about the process...but how/why do buy games generate so much revenue in your opinion? We have to pay 75-125k for the game, we need to pay operating costs of the arena, and a buy game generally only gets about 60% of the tickets sold. Again, not forming an opinion one way or another, but I'm not seeing where the big $$ comes from.
  3. Was RM successful? If it was more money for Chris Harriman, then it doesn't appear that RM got it. Hope RM got something/whatever it was he wanted.

From here in the cheap seats, I tend to agree (and certainly hope) that RM is probably happy. I also recognize (as does RM) that he is getting too old/health concerns to start all over again -- sounds like Larry Brown is cleaning house at SMU and is embarking on a multi-year rebuilding process -- and is therefore running out of time.

At the same time, and I direct this to all Fr. Biondi supporters who like to keep pointing at Chaifetz Arena as proof that Fr. Biondi fully supports the Athletic Department: what happened to the chartered flights, the extra money for coaching salaries, etc. Remember when RM held out those painful days 5 years ago before finally signing a contract with SLU? Those were all the concessions that RM wanted, still wants and is need to grovel for - despite his excellent reputation, his slow but steady rebuild with 4 scholar athletes like BC and KC, his overcoming the huge setback known as The Situation and his leading us not only to the Tourney but to the Second Round with only a 4 point loss to #1 Michigan State.

As to our hope that Fr. Biondi would stay out of the micro-managing of the Athletic Department, it appears we are no further along than we were back in the mid-1990's with Spoon and the lack of reimbursments for relatively small items such as cell phones for the coaches and the ice cream which Spoon himself bought for the team. And if the meddling by Fr. Biondi occurs in our only real cash cow (men's basketball), is it any wonder that the women's team still has no head coach... (go read/re-read the embarrasing posts in the women's BB Coach thread).

Someone call the jeweler. It's time Fr. Biondi receives his gold watch, a big thank you and a gentle push out the front doors of DuBourg Hall.

Is there anybody on hear saying Biondi fully supports the athletic department? I don't know who that contingent is, but I haven't seen it. I have traditionally be a supporter of Biondi given the improvements to the university. Just since I graduated in 2002, the place has improved significantly. And the decade before that was even greater. I don't mind the statues. All that being said, he shows time and time again his lack of support for the sports teams. Even our flagship sport gets nickel and dimed....and our donors are paying for most of the expenses. It may be time for Biondi to start thinking about retirement....
  4. Not good news but hardly "devastating." RM will hire someone else and we'll move along without him just fine. Assistant coaches gone and go all the time at other good programs and they don't miss a beat.

Devastating from the perspective that most agreed this was a real up and comer....but SLU was unable to retain him.
  5. From what I understand, this is legit. You have to feel that Miles was able to get Harriman a bigger salary as an assistant than he was getting here.

I asked in another thread what Majerus thought of Harriman and didn't get any takers. Got to think that Harriman didn't get the impression that he was going to be the next head coach of SLU and decided to move on. Sucks.
  6. Don't discount Tenn. Their fans are hot they're not in contention for titles.

I hate UT. Absolutely despise there team and everything they stand for. There is no worse color in the world than that putrid UT orange. That being said, they have had a tough few years, but will be vying for a national championship before long. To say they are some sort of doormat or lower tier school is plain wrong. I've never seen ANYTHING like UT fans. And despite my hatred, everybody should see a game at Neiland.
  7. Not really sure how GMU and VCU can really hurt the conference from a basketball standpoint. Even if you discount their Final Four appearances and feel like they might never reach those heights again, they still offer more than what a handful of teams currently in the conference have ever done. Look at the lack of post-season success for the following teams:

Duquesne: Last appeared in the NCAA tournament in 1976-77, which was well before joining the A-10. Have only finshed above .500 five times since joining the A-10 in 1993-94.

Fordham: Last made the NCAA tourney in 1991-92 (as a Patriot League member.) Have only finished above .500 once since joining the A-10 in 1995-96.

La Salle: Last made the NCAA tournament in 1991-92 (as a MAAC member.) Have only finished above .500 3 times since joining the A-10 in 1995-96.

Meanwhile, George Mason has won 20 or more games 5 of the last 7 seasons, made the NCAA tournament 3 times in that span and gone to a Final Four. They also won an NCAA tournament game in 2010-11. The last time they finished below .500 was in 1997-98. VCU has won 20 or more games 6 straight seasons under two different head coaches. Prior to Shaka taking over, their previous two coaches left for BCS programs (Anthony Grant and Jeff Capel) yet they were able to persevere and actually improve after each departure. They've made the NCAA tourney 4 of the last 6 seasons, and in 3 of those years, they won NCAA tournament games.

I think that the addition of these programs can only strenghten the profile of the A-10, not bring it down. I can understand some arguments about not wanting them in (large, public universities rather than private; A-10 already in Richmond and DC), but these are schools that have had recent success in the NCAA tournament. IMO, they can only help the future success of the A-10 in basketball.

Yeah, i responded above that I wasn't aware of some of the other factors. That being said, comparing these teams to the bottom tier of the league doesn't mean a whole lot to me. But, I do agree that they will not hurt the A-10. I think they will be solid middle tier teams with an opportunity to hit the top tier. Just not thrilled with it.
  8. From the standpoint of the east coast schools, it makes geographic sense in that these two are expected to replace UMass and UNCC. The change more tightly draws together the east coast schools centering the conference around Washington, DC metro. Richmond is only 107 miles from DC (i.e., STL to Columbia), although the traffic is murder on that route. Philly isn't far from DC either. I'm fine with this move. But we need Bulter to replace Temple.

I'm out of the loop....did not know UMASS and UNCC were leaving. I know it's been discussed, but wasn't aware they received an offer. If so, this makes a little more sense. Still not thrilled on the teams, but I suppose bigger is better in this day and age and they would fill the need.
  9. Not a huge fan. I feel like this puts us closer to a mid-major than major. Both have had extreme success lately, but I question there sustainability. George Mason is already fading away and VCU is one coaching move away from oblivion. Plus, we have both markets already covered. Just doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

  10. People that follow BillikenReport.com KNOW that we will not be signing him and also know why.

Thanks for the reminder KShoe. I've kept my subscription but haven't checked out the site in months. With Ben not posting here like Nate did, I forget about it all the time. Looks like there is quite a bit of good stuff out there...including articles with our new recruits.
  11. -this past season 64% of RL's shots were 3ptrs

I didn't realize that, but I doubt the remaining 36% was in the paint. Either way, I guess he is already about where I said. Honestly, I'd like to see Cody down low more than Rob at this point. I don't think Cody will ever have that first step to blow past other pf's, but already has the footwork to be a crafty inside player. I also think he could be extremely effective passing out of the post. He already see's the court so well, so putting him in that position could be really good. Not a primary inside player, but moreso than this year.
  12. I think JM will fill that role. If Loe can hit the 3 more consistently he's just a matchup nightmare. Loe also has the ability to put the ball on the floor. Just my opinion but Loe is better as Dirk light.

Agree with this, but Loe needs a bigger inside presence. I'm good with him roaming the perimeter and shooting threes for the most part, but we need him to go down low and show some post moves when we can't buy a bucket. I would like a 70/30 shot distribution outside the paint/inside the paint.
  13. I agree with those saying we should be higher than a 7. If we are as good as we think, we should be a few slots lower.

That being said, there are 4 A10 teams in the tourney according to this bracket...with SLU having the best seed. That is pretty exciting. This is the first time since I've followed the bills that we will be entering the season with some expectations NATIONALLY and probably the preseason favorite to win the conference. Let's get that fuoking extension signed already...

  14. SMU fan here.

Several media sources are reporing that you guys have nothing to worry about as RM is staying at SLU.

Good commentary on here, although some of the posters don't really know anything other than SMU is in Dallas (and not Ft. Worth as one poster thinks).

Overall, you guys were much more civil in your comments than the guys on the Marquette board when we were still trying to lure Buzz away from them. They had a pretty pi$$y attitude about the whole thing.

A lot of us would have been pretty excited about getting him down here, though. We haven't been to the Dance since '93. We'll have our arena updated in about 15 months thanks to a few generous booster donations, so the commitment is there as we head into the Beast. We have a few good recruits on board, along with a few freshmen who showed some flashes this year. So things are starting to head in the right direction (assuming that we hire a coach at some point, which some of us are starting to wonder about).

Either way, best of luck. Y'all seem to really like your coach, so you can rest easy it sounds like.

    - Junior

I'm in Vegas all week for a conference and can't stop checking this thread. I haven't won a dime, but this is the best potential news I've heard all week. Maybe my luck is changing. Down to the craps tables...
  15. Not racist --- elitest. I watched about ten minutes (viewing time not clock time) in the first half. Ho-hum. Who cared? Now all the Uk profs can pass their freshmen, keeping UK on ther APR up-and-up, and Calipari can go get five more play-for-pay-one-year-wonders and do it all over again.

Seriously, what were the overnight ratings? I wouldn't be surprised either way but I reall ydid not care to watch.

I thought the game was intense and had a lot of action....but I really didn't think it was good basketball. If I wanted to watch people run up and down the court, dunk and use isolation plays almost exclusively, I'd watch the NBA. Can't blame anybody since it obviously works, but I've gotten to the point where I prefer conventional basketball rather than this mini-NBA stuff. Kansas had 2 pick and rolls that I thought were beautiful, but were otherwise trying to beat KY at it's own game....which is near impossible.

And One Shining Moment :Jimbo Bad Language: sucked. i had to be at work early this morning and stayed up just to watch for our Bills. Huge FAIL.

  16. My understanding is that Pitino ran this kid off. Why? He got minutes throughout the tourney and seems like a stand up kid (based on VERY limited internet readings). Why is he no longer a cardinal?

That being said, I agree with the person who asked where the scholarship is coming from. I just don't see how this kid can come in, learn Majerus's system, and play meaningful minutes out of the gate. Not trying to bash the kid, but he doesn't seem like the talent level of a player who's coming in and will jump over everybody in the rotation with no prior knowledge of Majerus' system.

  17. How about the site below? The shirt doesn't say "Jordair Jett of Saint Louis University". It says airjordair and has an image of a dude with whacky hair. Seems like it could be Jordair Air Compressors to me.

    http://www.jordair.ca/

I agree with Skip on this. It is BS and I don't think SLU has any ability to say something about this. As long as we don't involve Jordair, I think we should make the shirts. Did Kentucky tells its fans to stop wearing Jorts....of course not. Only at SLU....

Quailman - I didn't get an order in, but if you start selling again, please let me/the board know. I planned on ordering 2.

  18. Yeah, one thing this tournament has done for me is really solidify how close we are to being a top team. Normally, I watch these things and think about how bad these teams would blow us out. This year, I watch and think of what could have been if we hit a shot against MSU. If our guys come out confident next year, we're going deep.

  19. Spoke with an old high school friend who is now one of Billy Taylor's assistants at Ball State about a week ago; said Jared Drew is a "project," yet we all know what Rick is capable of molding out of clay. I think KC will see a good amount of PT right away, but I do see JD redshirting for 12-13.

    Good post, ACE.

He may be a project...but certainly not the type of "project" we usually get at SLU if this video is any indication.
