  1. That is not very encouraging news at all. However, I would like to see what Boeheim actually said...did he say Louisville and Cincy WILL be coming or something like they are our top two choices and we will offer soon? Big difference between the two of them. A fan's summary can be bias and maybe he just heard what he wanted to. At least thats what i'm hoping as I would not like to see these teams leave.

  2. Interesting....Do you know if this guy went to SLU and walking on was an afterthought or if he really wanted to play for SLU and did not get an offer (maybe when we didn't have any schollies left). Anybody have any clue at all who this guy could be??

  3. Well Too, first off...are you going to reply to your posts this time or just run away like you did a month ago and not face the music? Obviously what little manhood you ever had left with the dignity of Mizzou basketball. What is up with that Brandon Morris comment?? I know everybody on this board is aware of your strict policy on how Juco's are the way to go and that Soderberg should have signed more Juco's. Now you finally (i realize you aren't a Billiken Alum or have billiken blood and therefore not as intelligent as the rest of the posters) see why SLU can't/shouldn't recruit Juco's. And instead of stating you were wrong, you take the hypocritical approach and insinuate Soderberg should never have recruited him in the first place. Which one is it TWO (as in 2 faced)....do we recruit Juco's anymore or were you WRONG?? (still waiting for gregory to sign that contract)

  4. Still not sure where I stand on that subject. If Ian is suspended ten games, we could be rather thin at the center spot. However once he gets back, we have a lot of centers with limited playing time. Question - If Ian is suspended for ten games and during that time Bryce proves to be good center, could we then redshirt Ian? Or must a redshirt be declared before the season starts?

  5. I think that instituting a PE major would not diminish our acedemic reputation and to say that it would is somewhat arrogant. As long as we hold these students to the same principles and acedemic integrity, it should not be a problem. As someone who holds a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering, I could say that I feel other majors such as communications, economics, journalism are "a joke" and that they don't deserve to be majors either. I have taken courses in all these subjects and found them to be very easy. However, these were the introductory classes and know they can get harder the further along you get. Just as, as Roy says, "Basketball 101" may be a joke, along the way, the courses get more in depth and deal with more difficult subject matter. Again, as long as we hold the program to the same standards as all SLU courses, it would not bring down our acedemic integrity.

  6. Yeah, i was wondering that too, but at Thicks pointed out, a student load could have been attained fairly easily. Even if boosters did pay for everything (tuition, books, rent), does it really matter anymore? If he has no affiliation with the athletic dept., I would assume people can give him all the money they want. Is there a rule?

McClain leaves SLU; juco guard ineligible

    By Stu Durando

    SLU basketball roster

Floyd McClain has left the basketball program at St. Louis University after suffering through three injury-plagued seasons with the Billikens.

The 6-4 guard was attempting to return after undergoing back surgery last season. The announcement of his departure for family and personal reasons came on the first day of class.

And it came days after coach Brad Soderberg found out that junior-college point guard Brandon Morris had failed to meet eligibility requirements.

McClain "said he had things more pressing than coming back to St. Louis,'' Soderberg said. "I didn't know what to tell him. It's kind of the end to a long, strange story. He just never got a chance to show what he could do.''

McClain missed the last two seasons due to an assortment of injuries. He played in 21 games during the 2000-01 season for then-coach Lorenzo Romar.

But SLU received an indication of what was to come when he suffered a knee injury on the first day of practice as a freshman.

Despite being at SLU for two seasons, Soderberg only saw McClain in game action briefly last summer when he played limited minutes during the team's European tour.

Romar had called McClain the team's best athlete when he arrived. Soderberg became fond of referring to McClain as his unclaimed lottery ticket, hoping that when he became healthy he would pay off big.

"I was getting kind of excited,'' Soderberg said, "because he was starting to feel good.''

Morris, who signed a letter of intent with SLU last fall, played two seasons at Iowa Western Community College.

"Brandon needed to achieve a certain grade in one course this summer (to be eligible), and he didn't accomplish his objective," Soderberg said. "I'm comfortable with the group of guards that we have on our roster, and there will be more playing time available for the people that are here."

Nice article from ESPN regarding cheating in college athletics. I thought this was an interesting quote..

"The smart crooks have plausible deniability -- "The assistant was acting alone, without my knowledge." "

Isn't that what we heard outta Romar? I really liked Romar when he was here. I remember him talking to the Blue Crew our first year and he seemed like a good guy. But I have a hard time believing that Romar had absolutely no knowledge of what Dollar was doing. I think the pressure got to him and they stepped over the line on some recruiting. However, I still believe that they did not cheat while at SLU given the fact that we had nothing to show for it (i.e. coming up short on all our top targets).

Either way, its an interesting read...

  9. I think I liked it better when there was no Billiken news to report. Anybody have the inside scoop on this McClain thing? From all the reports, it seemed like Floyd was just about recovered and was playing over the summer. What happened to make him withdraw? I would assume that if he stayed here for all this time, something pretty bad had to happen for him to withdraw from the team. Anybody??

  10. For those of you who don't check the C-USA talk board, Billiken posted this over there. Glad to see Sloan getting some good competition over the summer...and scoring.

    Outlaws remain... large

By: Earl Austin Jr., St. Louis American Sports Editor August 21, 2003

The championship game of the Anthony Bonner Summer Basketball League brought out the best of the old and the best of the new.

Led by the combination of veterans such as Anthony Bonner and Corey Tate and youngsters David Lee and Chris Sloan, the Outlaws overpowered the Pistons 81-61 to take home the championship on Tuesday night at Vashon High.

The Pistons won the regular season title, but they were no match for the inside power of the Outlaws, who constantly pounded the ball inside to the 6'9" 250-pound Lee, 6'8" Bonner and 6'7" Sloan. The frontline trio combined to score 49 points while dominating the boards. If that wasn't enough, the 6'4" Tate did the damage from the outside with 20 points, including four 3-pointers.

Bonner, 35, returned to St. Louis last week after playing in a summer professional league in Puerto Rico. During the winter, he plays in a professional league in Spain. Although Bonner has played in the National Basketball Association and seen plenty of the world, he still enjoys coming home to put on the Outlaws uniform.

"You never get tired of winning championships and the Outlaws win championships," Bonner said. "It was much more serious to me in the past. Now, it's fun because this league is about developing the young guys like David Lee. These college players have a place to play ball when they come home for the summer and that was something we didn't have when we were in college."

Lee, who will be a junior at the University of Florida, put on an offensive show and he scored a game-high 23 points. He dazzled the crowd with several spectacular dunks throughout the game. A diligent weight regime has enabled Lee to add about 15 pounds of muscle to his frame without sacrificing his quickness and athletic ability. As a sophomore at Florida, Lee averaged 11 points a game while leading the Gators in rebounding, field goal percentage and blocked shots.

"The extra weight has made a big difference in my game," Lee said. "I'm much stronger than I was during the season."

When the Pistons started to concentrate on the Outlaws' inside players, that opened thing up for Tate from the outside and the former University of Missouri standout took over. Tate keyed a 16-4 Outlaw run at the end of the first half to give his team a 37-29 halftime lead. The Outlaws trailed 25-21, but Tate scored eight of his team's 16 points during the run, including two 3-pointers.

The Outlaws pushed the lead into double digits early in the second half and were never threatened. Sloan, who will be a senior at Saint Louis U. added 16 points while scored 10 points. Marlon Pepper added 11 points to put five Outlaws' players in double figures.

Orlando "Seeweed" Johnson led the Pistons with 16 points. Corey Hill scored 11 points while former SLU center Kenny Brown added 10 points. The Pistons enjoyed an excellent summer league season. As well as winning the regular season Bonner League title, the Pistons also won the 19-and-over championship at the Show-Me Games in Columbia.

  11. "If those schools left, what's left of Conference USA might not be that bad, but, from a rivalry standpoint, it would be terrible for SLU."

I disagree. If those schools left, CUSA would not be a good conference...its decent at best. The only schools left worth a damn would be SLU, Charlotte, Memphis, and UAB....and these schools have done very little lately (exluding memphis). I'm sure Calipari would jet leaving us with Charlotte and UAB. IF that happened, we would have to find a new home or risk mid-major status for quite awhile...and I for one am ready to shed that image.

  12. That's exactly what I've been saying all along (only you said it better). You are right, we will struggle with identity during the first few games, but we will still have enough talent to beat the TN-Martins and Houstons on our schedule. Last year we were also adjusting to Brad's system...a system that we eventually thrived on. Since the core of this team already has a year in his system and after that loss to Minnesota, we're gonna come out of the gate better than last year. Obviously I'm an optimist, but I think this team will do no worse than 2 games over .500.

  13. Thanks Roy. Its great to hear some REAL Billiken news. Happy to hear that Brad feels Floyd can contribute next year. Anything out of him will be an added bonus for us. Sounds like Izik could give Reggie a run for his money at being "the man" next year. Can't wait for practice to start...
