  1. Bess Bess Bess

Hopefully if so this could be a tournament team when all our transfers are eligible in 17-18 which would be interesting as the core would be guys we've never seen play for SLU. Win a first round game and I'll take back everything I've said about Coach Lil' Travis Ford

The tourney teams Rick had were more talented, with or without Bess. No Kwamaine yet.

  2. He has to die or move on sometime. You can not make your decision based on him being there or not. I was a bit surprised to see the grading for the MWC and MO Valley being the same. I guess we really dragged the A10 down.

They made a rather seamless transition from Turgeon to Marshall. Strong leadership, great fan support and Koch Brothers money will keep them competitive.

  3. I get that he should do what is best for himself but it will be hard to sell TTU to a recruit based on "don't worry I am committed to TTU" given what just happened at Little Rock and UNLV. UNLV doesn't care about the money - what they care about is now being the last to fill a vacancy on the coaching merry go round - not a good spot to be in. Odd that the buyout clause kicked in so early.

Actually they do care about money. They notoriously underpay coaches. Lavin was very interested in UNLV but they wouldn't come close to his asking price.

As for Beard, it seems like he could use this episode to show just how committed he is to Tech - he paid $1 million to go there.

  4. Otzelberger is in the mix at South Dakota State to replace Scott Nagy. He must not have been a hot name after all. He reportedly interviewed for Milwaukee as well, but LaVall Jordan got that job.

Maybe not. It appears everyone wanted TJ at UWM but was vetoed by one person (kind of like Biondi vetoing Gregory in 2002). Per Deadspin

"The search for a new coach seems to have been a disaster as well. The school hired Michigan assistant LaVall Jordan, but according to a report both Braun and the search committee wanted to hire Iowa State assistant TJ Otzelberger—and told Otzelberger the job was his—but were overruled at the last minute by UW-Milwaukee chancellor Mark Mone."

Be thankful SLI has moved beyond this crap.

  5. Pretty telling the TTU has lost their football coach (Tuberville to Cincy) and basketball coach to the AAC, not exactly a glowing endorsement for Lubbock. Rumors have the Big 12 looking to add either Memphis or Cincy to their conference in the coming years to help get their football a conf championship.

Those rumors usually permeate from the schools, not the conference. Cincy is spending a lot of money to lobby for Big 12 membership.

Great move for both Memphis and Tubby.

  6. I don't really understand all the shade people throw at our players. I've had terrible coaches that made me hate practicing and great coaches that made me so much better. Count me in the group that blames crews & co.

Thank you. It takes a lot of guts to anonymously rip 18-21 year old kids.

  7. Mike Anderson has a history of restricting his players from transferring to any school in MO. Rotnei Clarke is the prime example. He wanted to transfer to SLU, but Anderson made his release conditional on him not transferring to any school in MO.

That's not uncommon for instate schools when there are only a few.

  8. Yeah, he played 2 games prior to the injury and then 21 minutes in the game right before he decided to transfer. 3 games in all. The first two games he only played a handful of minutes.

Apparently, he wanted to be redshirted his entire freshman year. Probably felt he'd only get limited minutes all year with MM, JJ and KM. Meanwhile, Crews likely wanted to keep him available in the non-conf season because of Mitchell's injury.

Don't know if Valpo will get it, but it's worth a shot. In the end, Carter really only played 2-1/2 seasons in his career, due to having to sit out the first half of the 2013-14 season with Valpo because of the timing of his transfer.

If he met the requirements for a medical hardship waiver, having played before the halfway point of the season and in fewer than 30% of the games in the season and was ruled out medically he'll get it. The medical records are key, they have to say he had to shut down because of the injury.

  9. For Jucos (an incredibly archaic term only still used in reference to athletics), I don't think it's as much "core" and whether they can handle it as it is transfer of credits. Specifically the long-discussed-here lack of a PE program and the inability of many transfers to use their Underwater Basketweaving for Physical Training credits as legitimate progress towards a degree.

the PE thing hasn't been the case for years. There has been a limit on the number of PE credits that can be transferred. Any JUCO with a history of placing kids at D1 schools knows the rules. The core is the issue because JUCO's have to have 40% of their degree requirements completed upon entering so the core courses are outstanding which adds to the number of credits needed to be completed to graduate. It's not the number of credits they transfer in it's what they need to get their degree.

As for freshmen, if SLU is not admitting athletes based on qualifier status only that's a nice change from the past when ability to actually succeed in school if admitted was taken into consideration.

  10. THE THING I DISLIKE THE MOST ABOUT TRAVIS FORD IS HE PLAYED AT MISSOURI! JK HAHA OH WELL LETS GO BILLS ILL STILL BUY TICKETS , HOPEFULLY THE SMOKE ALARMS DONT GO OFF THE FIRST GAME AGAIN , THAT WAS JUST A BAD OMEN FROM THE BEGGING

Yeah, but he got the hell out of Columbia after a year

  11. Slu isn't an ivy, far from it. As much as it pains to say, we are on par with mizzou academically unless you are in premed. Business, sociology, criminal justice, etc majors at Slu are all jokes. I find it very hard to believe most high school seniors would have a hard time getting into Slu to play bball because of grades. What's the average nowadays for getting accepted into Slu without having a sports gift? 24 act and 66% acceptance rate?

no, but having to take Theology, Philosophy and other core requirements is a turnoff for recruits.

  12. How many transfers out did we have the last 4 years? 3 I think. And we didn't exactly hit home runs. Keep in mind recruiting to slu is not like recruiting to ok state where you have Maybe the biggest college sports booster in America plus all the advantages of a large big 12 public school.

and don't forget SLU's academic restrictions in regards to initial admissions, continuing eligibility and transfers. Just slightly more difficult from the place known as Okie Lite.

  13. Depends. Standards for online "breaking news" are somewhat different.

I will say this. A buddy who runs a sports news website broke the news about a coaching hire....only to have that coach change his mind the next morning. So he was correct before he wasn't. Who knows what's going on.

  14. No... I also said this - I just can't think of a lot of coaches who move West to East and have a great deal of success. I'm sure people will dig and find some examples, but I can't think of many that readily come to mind. CAN YOU THINK OF MANY EXAMPLES?

My point in bringing up Romar is that I consider him a better recruiter and he didn't come in and start lighting it up with recruiting.

It's a different time than when Romar took the job in 1999. For one, SLU now has a new and modern facilities. They also have a legit recruiting budget. Also, the increased TV coverage plays a factor. Kids can go to a school far from home and their families can still watch them in almost every game whereas in the past that wasn't possible. Izzo once talked about a top player from abroad choosing UCLA over Michigan State because UCLA was on TV more and his parents could watch him (this is in the late 90's.). Not the case anymore.

  15. I thought we've been reading $1.5M+ for a new coach for weeks now... Is anything on this board based in fact

Damn good point. We've read $1.5 to $2 million. First, where did people get those amounts, and second, if Drew were making $300,000 at Valpo why would we be bidding against ourselves to give the guy a $1.7 million raise and pay more that double what the highest paid coach in the A10 currently makes>

Now it is certainly possible the numbers are correct but likely the amount available for the entire coaching staff, not just the head coach.

  16. Contract negotiations can be done in a couple of hours at most. Intermediaries / agents handle the legwork ahead of time. See Brad Underwood to Okie State...

not all the time. Martin doesn't even have a contract after 2 years at Cal. A school like Okie State has no financial limitations to deal with, schools that do often get hung up on buyouts, assistant salaries, etc. It depends on the agent too.

  17. Yeah, I don't understand the Grant thing...he was/is pretty high on my list.

I think Sydney Johnson from Fairfield would be a decent hire.

If we are going to hire someone named Ford, I'd rather it be Dana Ford than Travis...

OKC has another 2 months left in its season, Grant won't take any college job, especially with Monty Williams's situation. It kills the chances for any NBA assistant to take a college job right now. They're all under contract too.

Johnson is mediocre. Hasn't done anything at Fairfield since leaving Princeton, no ties to the Midwest.

  18. So I know he was mentioned earlier, but in light of Notre Dame still being in the tournament I am wondering if the search firm/AD will reach out to Martin Ingelsby if a deal is not in place with another candidate. Watching the guard play of ND over the last few seasons (his area of emphasis as a member of the staff) as well as his role in helping make game plans are two reasons I would love to see SLU take a long look at him. He played at ND and is considered an up and comer in coaching circles. The experience at a major Catholic institution could lend him to sharing in the vision that the university is trying to promote. As Pistol mentioned in a prior post, there is little to be found on his recruiting, but I would much rather him than Ford or Dooley. On a semi-related note, go Irish tonight.

May wants a head coach. Don't blame him on that.

  19. I agree with all of this. Rice isn't a wow hire but he'd be a better fit than Dooley or Ford or Terry. He's still not a guy that gets everyone excited but we're getting to the point where I guess we have to expect that

Rice has everyone back for Monmouth next year, his value will only increase if he stays.

Been saying this for months about Bennett. He'll never leave SMC and why would he?
