  1. If Josh Schertz is a man of his word, which all signs indicate he is, everyone here will be pleased. Further, there’’s no sense in rooting against this ISU team this week. The more post-season experience this team has, the better.

  2. This will be unpopular and frowned upon but like I’m done with this Yuri insanity. He’s completely scuffed his Billiken legacy. The numbers are great and all but he d*cked around the program last spring essentially holding it hostage for NIL money allowing this B*g G*ard d0ucher to be his business manager, or so it appears. He withdraws from the portal as if he never planned on exploring other options, BS. He comes back, and can’t lead this team to the tournament(you wanna blame Ford too, fine but we played our best game at GW without Yuri. Mid season his “manager” goes after Rich Chaifetz on Twitter saying that they haven’t paid him the NIL that was promised, which is a complete lie. This behavior continued throughout the season with BG continuously saying SLU was shorting Yuri on $$. Then he enters the draft saying he wouldn’t want to wear any other jersey in college, now he’s apparently going to enter the portal again, and wear another jersey. Numbers are great, he’s a great passer, incredibly fun to watch. But man I have trouble believing anything the dude says. Players asked to be paid, asked for NIL, well now you get the criticism for acting a fool. When you were just on scholarship, fine you don’t get the heavy criticism. However you start bringing cash into the equation, now you’re a full blown adult pro worthy of whatever scrutiny comes your way.

  5. Apologies if this has been brought up in another thread, but SLU really needs to do it's senior night activities before the game next Tuesday. A few reasons: - It's an 8'oclock start which means there is plenty of time to do it before the game. And it's kind of late for most Billiken fans after the game. Even in the best of times, I don't want my kids out till 10:30 or later. - We are playing Dayton and will almost certainly lose and probably get blown out. After the game is never fun when you lose and if it's like last night, 2/3 of the fans that show up will have already left. It's a safe bet that there will be more Dayton fans in Chaifetz at the end of the game than Billiken ones. - As angry as we all are with the coaching, players such as T.J., Gibson, etc. deserve a good send-off.

  7. My grandfather scouted for SLU in the 40s, 50s and 60s and Richie Parks was one of his favorite STL players he ever saw. While SLU had some black players before Parks, Parks was the first black star at SLU, some of that was that he was allowed to play, instead of just being token black guy on the bench but he was a powerful PF. Musclebound in the mold of the late 70s and early 80s NBA enforcer types. Inside the paint he was unstoppable and was the best Billiken rebounder until Bonner. Bennington recruited him to SLU. His reputation among blacks in the area was not great but Parks wanted to stay home and he and his HS coach, James Price, wanted him to become the first hometown black star. As was the custom with many private schools at the time, Bennington didn't let Parks star. He was relegated to rebounding and setting screens so the white guys could shoot. I don't know if Bennington was really racist or just going with what was accepted at the time. Bennington recruited a big man right after Parks from Maplewood, Matthew Aitch. When he flunked out of SLU Bennington sent him to Moberly and then took him with him to Michigan St where he was all Big 10 performer. Hard to believe he'd do that if he was really a big racist. My father told me he remembers he was 14 or 15 and the Billikens played Bobby Knight and Coach K in the NIT Park's Jr year. The announcers talked up Parks as the real threat on SLU, even though he was just a role player. My father didn't think Parks was good at all. My grandfather quickly informed him the announcers were right and were probably fed their talking points by Coach Knight. Parks senior year Brehmer became coach and let Parks off the leash. He had one of the best single seasons in Billikens history going for an 18 and 12 year. The MVC was a powerhouse, Cincy went to the elite 8 and 5 of the 8 teams including SLU were ranked at some point in the season. People piss on Buddy Brehmer but SLU played 26 games that season, 16 opponents were ranked during the season. A juggernaut of a schedule. Parks was the 2nd best big in the conference, only bested by somebody named Wes Unseld. Parks went toe to toe with Unseld at Kiel and beat him, SLU also knocked off Cincy when they were top 5 that year. Parks was drafted by the Cincinnati Royals in the NBA draft but they cut him and he played for a semi pro company team. The year after he made the Pittsburgh Pipers, playing in a reserve role behind Connie Hawkins, and won an ABA title. The Pipers brought him back the next year but while Parks was back home he got into a car wreck at Grand and MLK. His knees were destroyed. He came back to play but team doctors said his career was over. Parks life took a downward spiral after that. Multiple jobs, divorce, and alcoholism. He moved back in with his mother in his childhood home. By the time of his death he had become the neighborhood drunk. The 49er bar was home to him and the regulars knew to put up with the huge man's drunken antics. The night of his death a couple who didn't know Parks came into the bar. Parks hit on the woman and physically assaulted her. The couple fled the bar with Parks in pursuit. A fight between the man and Parks ended in Parks being shot 5 times. A tragic ending but Parks was one of the all-time greats and a true trailblazer at SLU, succeeding as a Billiken despite the many obstacles in his way.

  8. Top 10 moment, Ford invited my son to practice after the Myrtle Beach trip. He learned of him getting sick and being hospitalized last summer which would cause him to miss some of the home games this season. He has been a season ticket holder since he was born (now 13). Ford walked him around the court after practice and they had a cool chat.

  9. So kind of you to post this. The Wendel Family is honored and humbled by the decision and actions undertaken to establish the scholarship. A fellow SLU alumnus, big Billiken fan, and follower of Billikens.com, Bob Steck, deserves all the credit for this. Bob provided the seed money to establish the scholarship and has worked tirelessly behind the scenes, with the help of Meg Connolly in the Alumni Development Office, to make this happen. Early in his academic career, Dad worked the scorekeeper's table at the Billiken games at Kiel Auditorium. He'd drag his 4 young sons to the games (to give Mom a break). We'd run around the halls and ramps of Kiel while he worked the games. Still have great memories of Joe Wiley, Harry Rogers, Monroe Douglas, Anthony Bonner, and so many other Billiken players from that era. They will never fully appreciate the joy and excitement they brought to my life, and so many other kids my age. I still remember some of the last games at Kiel. When the fans would get going, and start stomping their feet, that place would rock. Great memories. I'm not sure exactly when Dad stopped working the scorer's table and had to buy tickets to get into the games, but he held season tickets every year after that. As Willie mentioned, besides the City of St. Louis, one of his loves in life was Biiliken basketball. He passed that on to his kids. Next week I'm helping my daughter, her husband, and their three boys move from Chicago to St. Louis. We hope to pass on that love of Billiken basketball to another Wendel generation. The Wendel Family hopes that the scholarship helps a SLU student who is committed to helping the City of St. Louis be the best that it can be. If you give to SLU, we hope you'll consider giving to the scholarship fund. Go Bills!

  11. Kind of a funny story regarding Vice. After the final home game vs Dayton, they always let friends, family and fans on the court to meet and get pictures with the players. Anyone that knows or has met my 10 year old knows he's basketball crazy. NBA encyclopedia, SLU stats before he was born, he knows everything. I told him he should go introduce himself to Medley and Vice since they'd be the future of the program. He goes over, sticks his hand out to Vice, and introduces himself. He comes back with a sour look on his face and said, "That guy is a bum. He didn't even speak a word to me." Fast forward to a month ago when I told him he de-committed, he was instantly saying how it's better for us, he's a bum, etc. I tried explaining the Billikens.com "he's a tool" thing to my wife and how awesome it was my son was doing it without even knowing it. She looked at me unimpressed and called me a tool.

  16. Most other platforms are going to cost them money. We have offered ours for free. Modest as our little show may be, we'd be giving them access to hundreds of dedicated SLU fans, many of whom might be willing to open their pocketbooks if they hear more about the BVF, how it works, its goals, etc. We obviously can't make guarantees for them but I'd have to believe they'd get something out of an appearance (or semi-regular appearances). It would cost the BVF nothing but about a half hour of a volunteer's time. Zero-overhead fundraising strikes me as both helpful (to the BVF) and relevant (to our audience). Win-win.

  17. Here is the way I saw it... This was not a game simulation ...this was a real game. ...3 refs...score keeping...no stops in play for learning moments. The game was in the Coach RM gym...crowd of about 100 There were 3 periods...each was 12 minutes... Major take away....Extremely intense...more so then some of our past regular games....players diving...players being slammed to the floor...game was called just under 3 min left in the 3rd period due to cramping....intensity plus warm environment= cramping. Remember, each team had 8 players...so while there was only 33 min....each player played a lot. I mentioned to one of the players that I liked the intensity...he said every practice is like that...these are players that are hungry....No matter what happens this year ...it shouldn't be boring. Ball movement was quick...players were quick...no standing around or walking the ball around...137 pts in just 33min....and it was not because there was no defense. Game observations... Got off to a slow start as neither team could hit a bucket but things started to heat up as the game progressed. Hughes was hitting....and Parker started heating after the 1st period. Ezewiro is a force...He reminds me of French only bigger...couple of inches and 20lbs. BUT with 1 big difference...He can hit the long ball. Not freak shots...he can shoot from the outside. I asked him after the game how things are going and he said the NCAA is reviewing his case now and he hopes to have an answer by next week. Keep your fingers crossed ...he is a difference maker. TJ had a fine game...He drew the unlucky card of having to defend Ezewiro early on and did a nice job...no small accomplishment....that bodes well if he will be playing 4/5. A promising player who showed well was Magassa...had good moves to the basket and finished. van Bussel another big boy...when he went up against Ezewiro ...it was clash of the Titans. Meadows, Dalger , and Medley will be players...they looked good with more upside to come as the team starts to meld. Finally Jimerson was Jimerson...not his best shooting night but he got his points with cuts to the basket. Bottom line...The team has a lot of potential....and a lot of skill and athleticism. If they can keep TOs down and make their shots they will compete. Again, this will be a fun team to watch...HUNGRY and INTENSE.

  21. Just because the schedule isn’t that sexy doesn’t mean the team is gonna be bad. Our guards can put it in the hole. This board was practically unreadable last year and it’s easy to take the pulse this year. Wins will garner little praise while losses will produce global melt downs tiredly calling for Fords head. We get it. Just support the team, enjoy the atmosphere and chill the f*ck out. The coaching situation will work itself out one way or another. Go Bills.

  22. Kevin was far better than "decent." He is 6th in the all-time SLU scoring list and while that may have been modestly inflated by his teammates not being good enough to spread out the shots, he would have been a major play on any Billikens team, ever. Not to mention he was a two time Australian league MVP and played in the Olympics for Australia. Dude was a stud.

  23. Again, this critique against Yuri simply needs to be refuted, and put in proper context. The timing of his college career was highly unusual. His freshman season, the team ends the regular season Top 50 NET, and likely needs one win in the conference tournament to get into the Dance. COVID shut down the conference tournament and the season, so he never even got the chance. The following season, the team is rolling behind Yuri and in early January the team cracks the Top 25 for the first time since the Majerus era, then COVID shuts the team down for more than a month. Even the harshest Ford or Yuri critic would have to concede that team was a lock for the Dance. The following year, the pre-season conference POY blows out his knee before the season begins. Under the circumstances, players like Yuri and Gibby stepped and grew their games in Perk's absence, but it was no longer a Dance caliber team without Perk. This most recent season is really the only one where the team underachieved. The frustration for this season is justified, but don't let it cloud the prior three seasons and re-write history. Yuri had a hell of a career that should be celebrated.

  24. I'm not sure I understand the animosity sense I get from the billiken.com mbm's for Schertz wanting to finish his season. My gosh, any man of character would have made it clear from the first communication about the billiken opening that he wanted to finish his season with the sycamores. He owes it to Indiana State, the fans and mainly his team to see the season to the end. Personally, I like Schertz even more for taking this stance. I am rooting for all the success he can accomplish.

  26. It is a bit insulting when you make reasonable critiques of the program and people say you are a hater and not a real fan. For my part, I have been financially supporting the program for pushing 50 years and as my situation improved I have increased that support to the point that it is a fair amount more than probably many on this board do who are calling me a hater and not a real fan so to be called not a real fan is absolutely BS and those who try to make themselves out to be the moral high ground is simply disgusting. I won't even try to restate my position and those who think much the same because some of you are simply incapable of wanting to try to understand. So, as far as I am concerned, those who are calling others haters and not real fans can go piss up a rope. No this is not how I really feel - you don't want to know that.

  27. I'd have an easier time trusting the process if we had a different AD in charge, if there weren't a cone of silence over everything at all times, and if getting this hire correct weren't so crucial to the survival of this program. I hope the end result that satisfies the most people also aligns with the best possible coach for this job. The latter is the most important thing.

  28. It's not just Dayton and VCU though, it's against ANY good team. I did this before the season, and have updated it so far this year. SLU vs Top 4 A-10 opponents, including the A-10 Conference Tournament (Regular Season record in parentheses): 2016-17: 0-5 (0-5) 2017-18: 1-5 (1-4) 2018-19: 4-4 (1-4) 2019-20: 2-2 (2-2) 2020-21: 3-2 (2-1) 2021-22: 3-5 (2-4) 2022-23: 1-5 (1-4) 2023-24: 0-7 (0-7) TOTAL RECORD: 14-35 (9-31) TOTAL RECORD (factoring 16-17 out): 14-30 (9-26) TOTAL RECORD (factoring 16-17 out, 19-20 COVID out, 20-21 COVID out): 9-26 (5-23)

  32. Sorry, but is not what is happening. Many of the people that don't like the constant complaining and calls to fire Ford probably agree with you. They just don't want to hear about it in every other post in every thread. There is nothing wrong with them wanting that. It would be nice to be able to have discussions about Billiken basketball that did not constantly get taken over by "Fire Ford" sentiment. I agree with what a lot of these posters are saying, I just don't want to see it in everything I read on the board. The Wiz puts out his game predictions and the thread is taken over by the "Fire Ford" types. There is discussion about recruit, and it gets taken over by the "Fire Ford" guys. Just because some of us want to have discussions that don't involve firing Coach Ford, doesn't mean we like what is happening or that we disagree with those that take issue with Ford's performance.

  33. Why are we downplaying Flowers' game? Back-to-back A10 DPOY, finalist for Naismith (national) DPOY, 2nd team all-conference, led the nation in blocks, double-double machine, even got a triple-double with blocks, and stepped up her scoring considerably down the back half of the season as she led the program to its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance. She was great, one of the top few players in program history.

  34. My guesses: - We really like the guys we've brought in. They're going to be day 1 difference makers - The transfer portal is just not right. You have to regulate it. Under the table deals going on - We are still building up the NIL game. With that and the Champions Center, we can compete - Kellan Thames has grown to 7 feet tall - Yuri is going to rack up the assists playing with Curry and Thompson - _________ (insert popular name here) looks like a star this summer. He will have a huge year - Kellan Thames is actually 7 foot 3 inches as of the end of this call - Great spot for Goodwin. Gets to play with hall of famers.

  36. This. The notion that Yuri and Big Guard are somehow colluding is totally undermined by the latter having no idea of Yuri's next step. We got to watch the best passer in Billiken history the last four years. He provided countless fun moments and highlights. He played hurt. He took a million charges. He never got a technical. He never had an incident. He graduated in May. At the end of the last home game, he stated unequivocally that he was leaving. He helped keep a team that lost Goodwin, and French, and then lost its preseason POY one game in, on the fringes of an NCAA tourney birth. Yes, last year sucked. Still, every fan should look fondly on the Yuri experience on the whole. Buy the guy a brick and thank him for the highlights.

  38. 'Twas the night before Christmas when all through the Fetz Nothing was stirring, not even the nets; The banners were hung from the rafters with care, In hopes that The Wiz would soon be there; The fans were nestled all snug in their seats; With visions of Bills wins, while they munched on their treats. And Mama in her sweatshirt, and I in Bills blue Had just settled in to watch a basket or two. When on Compton and 40 there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my seat to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash And then flung open the door, in a very mad dash The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow, Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below; When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,, But a basketball team as quick as reindeer, With a little old driver, so lively and all biz, I knew in a moment it must be The Wiz. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled and shouted and called them by name: Now! Jimerson, now! Hargrove, now! Dalger, oh my lord, On! Medley, on! Meadows, on! Hughes, and Coach Ford; To the top of Gate A ! To the top of the wall ! " Now dash away ! Dash away ! Dash away all !" As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky; So up to the arena top the coursers they flew, With a sleigh load of stats and The Wiz too: And then in a twinkling I heard on the floor The bouncing of b-balls making baskets galore. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down Section 103 The Wiz came with a bound: He was dressed all in Bills gear, from his head to his toe, And his clothes were all blue, he was ready to go; A bundle of spreads was flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack: His eyes- how they twinkled ! His dimples: how merry, His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry; His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broad face, and a little round belly That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly: He was chubby and plump, just like a Billiken, And I laughed when I saw him and thought Gee Williken; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head Soon gave me to know that The Wiz had a spread. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And calculated point spreads, ; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose And giving a nod,… BAM …up the concourse he rose. He sprang in the Chaifetz , to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle: But I heard him exclaim, as he shouted out clear-- BILLIKENS WILL WIN, IT WILL BE BETTER NEXT YEAR To all that follow the Billiken Biz Merry Christmas to all , best wishes from The Wiz

  41. Actually, Grant knows QUITE a bit about the Band, as he's a past member of the Band about 10ish+ years ago. He and I played alongside each other in a big band/swing band back in the day as well. Grant is a VERY good dude, solid player, and knows his way around. Of all the people I could've wanted to take over the reins, I am super grateful it is him. He also is getting re-established here in STL, so the lack of communication is most likely from him just trying to get his feet settled under him. He knows the history and we'll be working with him to hopefully bring back the good times. Time will tell, but he's got good support from us, now we'll see how the AD treats him.
