  1. Board founder David Narkiewicz has been named General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer for Nestle Purina. Just hope that doesn’t interfere with his real job as board moderator.

  2. 'Twas the night before Christmas when all through the Fetz Nothing was stirring, not even the nets; The banners were hung from the rafters with care, In hopes that The Wiz would soon be there; The fans were nestled all snug in their seats; With visions of Bills wins, while they munched on their treats. And Mama in her sweatshirt, and I in Bills blue Had just settled in to watch a basket or two. When on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my seat to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash And then flung open the door, in a very mad dash The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow, Gave the luster of mid-day to objects below; When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,, But a basketball team as quick as reindeer, With a little old driver, so lively and all biz, I knew in a moment it must be The Wiz. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled and shouted and called them by name: Now! Jimerson, now! Yuri 19, now! Hargrove, oh my lord, On! Nesbitt, on! Okoro, on! Thatch, and Ford; To the top of Gate A ! To the top of the wall ! " Now dash away ! Dash away ! Dash away all !" As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky; So up to the arena top the coursers they flew, With a sleigh load of stats and The Wiz too: And then in a twinkling I heard on the floor The bouncing of b-balls making baskets galore. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down Section 103 The Wiz came with a bound: He was dressed all in Bills gear, from his head to his toe, And his clothes were all blue, he was ready to go; A bundle of spreads was flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack: His eyes- how they twinkled ! His dimples: how merry, His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry; His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broad face, and a little round belly That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly: He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head Soon gave me to know that The Wiz had a spread. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And calculated point spreads, ; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose And giving a nod,… BAM …up the concourse he rose. He sprang in the Chaifetz , to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle: But I heard him exclaim, as he shouted out clear-- BILLIKENS WILL WIN, IT WILL BE BETTER THIS YEAR To all that follow the Billiken Biz Merry Christmas to all , best wishes from The Wiz

Starting to lose interest in SLU basketball at this point. If we are going to be PCR testing asymptomatic vaccinated players everyday waiting for the magical ‘zero reading’ we might as well just call it. How am I watching 5 New Year’s Day bowl games with 100+ players on each field but SLU is still acting like it’s April 2020 ready with the ventilators for the 20 year olds. Morons

He’s been living in Wisconsin, unable to work because of his visa status with the US government as a Canadian. Everything he’s been reporting for a while now has been from his house in Wisconsin. And he’s done it for free. He hasn’t gotten paid for any of it. Just thought you should know before you start criticizing his content.

  7. I guess it depends on what you mean by "obnoxious." We were sitting two rows in front of them - directly in front of them. Yes, we got an earful. But it was pretty obvious from early on that they are current students at Fordham. They actually go to class with the players and know them on a first name basis. When we finally turned around after the game and met them, it wasn't surprising that they were all decked out in Fordham clothing. Isn't that what every school wants from their "student section" - loud, enthusiastic, non-stop support? They never made a critical or inappropriate comment about the Billikens or any Billiken player. We had a great conversation with them after the game. As we guessed, one of them is from St. Louis (Nerinx High - the one in the middle). She brought her two roommates to St. Louis for the game and to show them around town (took them to the Hill to compare St. Louis' best Italian restaurants to New York's). Dad (a U High graduate) got them the tickets and was there with them. I was impressed with their enthusiasm. There were 3 young boys sitting in front of us. We told them it was their job as Billiken fans to "out-cheer" the Fordham fans. It really got the boys into the game (for a while). At one point one the boys turned around and "booed" the Fordham fans. The dad did a great job of using it as a teaching moment and talked to the boys about the difference between negative fans and positive fans, and a good fan is only a positive fan who cheers positively for his or her team. Without those three young ladies those boys would not have learned that lesson. The three young ladies were only positive fans. Let the kids be kids, they were just having fun and being supportive of their team.

  9. I ran into a friend of mine who is a Missouri High School State Hall of Fame Basketball Coach so I do think his opinion has legitimacy. He brought up the Auburn game which he watched on TV. I asked him why did he think Ford slowed the play down when he did with a 13 point lead. His response was that apparently Ford saw something that led him to believe a change was needed. I then pointed out that Ford did the same thing against Belmont and UAB. He told me that sometimes a coach makes the same mistake because they believe what they did was right and are reluctant to change. When I told him I thought the approach probably cost us an at-large bid he did not disagree. He then went on and pointed out that the loss of Perkins was tough and he thought because of it Ford had accomplished so far about what he would have expected. I told him that I thought there was enough talent on the team to compensate somewhat for the loss of Perkins if the players could find where they fit in with Perkins being lost. He said that could be because from what he saw the team could have won all three of those games. He then told me that when evaluating a college coach you have to look at the big picture. He believes that Ford is a good recruiter - over the years he had players go to play for Self, Williams, Stewart, AZ to name a few so he has seen good recruiters. He believes Ford is a good recruiter and a satisfactory game coach. He also said for SLU Ford is a good choice because he probably is not looking a P5 job - been there done that - and is one who is willing to be committed to SLU. Honestly, I think it is a decent evaluation of Ford. He also said that he would always take a good recruiter who is a satisfactory game coach over a good game coach but a weak recruiter in the long run. My take away was that while it is frustrating to lose games like Auburn the real prize is winning the A10 and he did not think that was a stretch from what he saw. So, I guess all is not lost yet.

  13. Chance to Dance SLU...52%...up Dav...53%...up VCU...50%...dn Day...49%....new No other A-10 teams that are at least 40% SLU and Dav up 1%...both did what they were supposed to do...VCU takes a hit after a pounding by the Bonnies ...down 7%. And Dayton's meaningful win over us pushes them into the picture....4 teams all around 50% ...Which means as of Jan 16 it looks like 2 teams will get in. This brings us to part 1 of a 2 game series with UMass...Thur is a key game, the more difficult of the 2 because we start there. A win at UMass probably means a sweep. But as you can see by the spread, this will by no means be an easy game. The theme for this game will be ....It's all about the 3s. UMass comes in as one of the top shooting teams ITN ...#3. They will be dropping bombs all night...They are 5th ITN in 3PM....45% of all their shots are 3s...they make only slightly more of their 2s than 3s...46%/41%. But there is good news too. UMass will be the worst team we face this year on defense. We will have plenty of open looks ..we just need to make shots ...btw, they don't rebound. Their philosophy will be ...we plan on winning by outscoring you in a high scoring game. The computer has asked me to do a short rant for it. There seems to be a discrepancy between what it is cranking out and what some board members perceive. Some here think we have a horrible team and we have no Chance to Dance..in fact we shouldn't even show up because we are an embarrassment. Meanwhile the computer pours over data and says ...WHAT?...The difference between the board member and the computer is that some board members are looking at only the Bills through a microscope...The computer pours through the data of 358 teams and says... Wow, this is a pretty good team... On offense we are only 1 letter grade away from the honor roll (Straight As)...We need 1 more basket every other game and we reach elite status (top 15% of all teams).... Meanwhile we have reached honorable mention on defense (Straight Bs) which puts us in the top 30% of all teams. In the A-10 , the computer doesn't see anybody that will dominate...our chances to Dance are as good as anybody. This rant doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement...There is ...especially on TOs ...The computer sees this as an area that can derails us...also inconsistency ..the inability to make our numbers all the time because of wild swings in different categories. Finally, the difference between me and the computer is I can take 1 paragraph to rant ...the computer would take 300 pages (all numbers) and if anyone disagreed with it it would crank out another 300. I just punch in Go Bills and it shuts down....Rant over ...we now return to the UMass report.... Keys to the game... The keys is the 3s....We will need to use all of that B+ 3P defense to contain them from the arc....If CJ Kelly (there are 2 Kellys) doesn't play it will be a minus for for Mass as he is one of their gunners. The bad news is even if he doesn't play they have 3 or 4 others that can pop from the arc....3 key players to watch ...Fernandes...leads the team in PPG...Assts...FG%...Stls... Buttrick...Reb and Blks ....R Kelly (no relation)...52% from 3....18th ITN WWN2D2W....Since we don't know if CJ Kelly will play let's do this...hold their top 3 scorers to 33 pts.......48/38/77...we will have some good looks...make the shots.......80 pts...this is doable against a bad D...the closer we get to 80 pts the better our chances will be to win....keep TO to 11...they will not force TOs . Fham was a B+ in forcing TOs ...UMass is a D+ ... if we have a high number of TOs then that is on us. ...Reb ...win the battle by 8+...this is an important stat...the last thing we want to do is give them extra chances. Bottom line...We are the better team ..on offense and defense. A win at Mass is worth 2 as we will be favored by much more than 5 coming back with a victory....Let's make short work of them...It should only take a Minute Man.

  17. I would have to disagree, I don't think he looks scared at all, in fact, I've been impressed by his aggressiveness during his limited minutes. I don't think he has looked uncoordinated at all, in fact, he has demonstrated a nice 10ft. jump shot and runs the floor well.. his numbers are extremely good for the limited minutes he has received...in just 62 minutes he has scored 36 points and has 26 rebounds, the 40 minute average based on this is 23.2 ppg and 16.8 rpg. Additionally, he has made 6 of 8 ft's...his one negative is to's which he's had 8. He has enormous potential in my view, and definitely deserves increased opportunities...Corey Tate before the season predicted stardom for him, and it's apparent why...

    Former Billikens Updates

Hasahn French - I believe French is hurt right now. He is still on the roster for KRKA but hasn’t played since Nov 20th. KRKA plays in 2 leagues, the top Slovenian League in which they are 10-1 and in 1st place. They also compete in the ABA League, which is a Baltic Superleague comprising top teams from several countries. KRKA has one of the worst records in that league at 3-9. In ABA league play through 8 games played French averages 20 minutes a game, 6 points, 6 boards, 3 TOs, shoots 54% from the field. In Liga play French fares much better with averages of 11 points, 7 boards, 2 steals, 2 blocks, and 64% shooting. From the FT line in both leagues French is 2-14. Willie Reed - Competing for Buducnost the top team in the Montenegro league. They are not participating in league play right now, currently only playing in the ABA league and also Eurocup competition. They are currently 9-3 in ABA play, good for 4th, and 6-2 in Eurocup which is 2nd in their pool. In ABA competition Reed carries averages of 13 points and 6 rebounds, while shooting .650 from the field & 70% from the line. In Eurocup play he has nearly identical stats with an uptick in shot percentage. Buducnost played KRKA last week but French did not play. Buducnost blew them out 110-64. Reed had 17 points on 8-9 shooting. Would have been interesting to see two different generations of Billikens big men match up. Dwayne Evans - Evans is playing at a high level for 20-3 Ryukyu Kings in the Japan B League. The Kings are the top team in the league and Evans is their leading scorer at over 17 points per game, 7 boards, 3 assists and 1 steal while shooting .550/.360/770. He was recently snubbed out of a berth in the All Star game and responded by being named the league’s Player of the Week in week 22 with a 26 points 12 rebound performance. DJ Foreman - Foreman has become the Shaq of the Icelandic Division 1 league, a step below the top Subway league that Javon Bess plays in. Foreman suits up for Fjolnir, which sits in 5th place with a 7-6 record. Foreman is 2nd in the league averaging 27 ppg, 3rd with over 10 rebounds, 3rd in blocks and 6th in steals. The league is on a break till the 2nd week of January. Foreman’s last game on Dec 17th he notched career highs in points with 40 and rebounds with 20 in a 100-90 victory. Kwamain Mitchell - Mitchell is leading Fribourg Olympic to a first place 10-1 record in Swiss league play so far. Mitchell leads his team in scoring with 13 ppg, assists with 4, steals with 2, while shooting .724/.324/.652. Fribourg is the leading squad in Swiss Hoops with 17 total league championships. The team qualified for a play in to compete in the Basketball Champions League but was bounced in the early stages. Brian Conklin - Signed with Yalova in the Turkish League. Yalova currently sits at 4-9 near the bottom of the league and out of playoff contention. Conklin has regained his starting role and is averaging 10 points and 5 boards, while shooting .488/.266/.767 through 11 games. Javon Bess - Bess also plays in Iceland for Tindastoll but in the top league, known as the Subway League. Tindastoll is in 4th place with a 6-4 record. Bess leads the team in most categories. He is one of the leagues top scorers with over 19 ppg, 5 boards, 2 assists, and nearly 2 steals. He shoots .425/.333/822. Reggie Agbeko - Agbeko continues to play in the Spanish Silver league, a 3rd tier minor league for Zornotza, located in NE Spain about 20 miles from the coast. Many worse places you could play basketball. Zornotza sits in 1st place in the West division with a record of 9-2. Agbeko has been a steady contributor, averaging over 11 points and 7 rebounds a game starting at PF. Rob Loe - Loe continues to play for the New Zealand Breakers in the Australian league. Loe has struggled with working back from injuries and so far has seen only backup duty. The Breakers are 0-6 on the year. Loe has appeared in 5 games, averaging 12 minutes a game but has only attempted 3 FGs. Mike McCall - Recently signed with the Iranian Superleague team Kouchin. He’s appeared in 2 games and is still working his way into the rotation. His last game he played 18 minutes and scored 6 points. Iran has been known to be a difficult place to play for foreigners so we will see how long McCall can hold on.

I would have played without a center at least on the possession where Traore got blocked. TJ and JN both spent too much time on the bench. Also Umass didn't pressure the ball so we did not need to play Yuri and Jones at the same time.

  23. -I was able to rewind on the KMOX site so here's a brief rundown, I agree a worthwhile listen -we do mandatory testing, most programs do not -didn't have enough healthy bodies to go to UMass, practice on Thursday was 4 on 4 and played CForte to get 5 on 5 Friday, CFord said "players" came out of protocol on Sunday morning -Markhi going to play more at the 4, wished he had played him more on Sunday -said crowd was terrific and proud of the effort from all on the team -RW was away for 18 days including a death in the family -JGood was home when he got news of call-up as Wizards had a break, he wants to be great and after the team had a bad game against Seton Hall things changed for the better with JGood (sophomore year), he takes tough coaching -LaSalle postponed and doesn't look likely for a replacement as don't want 3 road games in a row -Martin has come a long way on recovery but not yet ready to go, up to him, does more every day -TJ is fine, practiced today -CFord not happy with rebounding and defense, getting out rebounded is unacceptable and 69 points allowed is too many, we have shown elite defense and rebounding and expects it, ball screen defense will be the concentration this week -non-con was strange for the league, Davidson best NET and they were picked 5 or 6, Mason a surprise, RI is really good through transfers, SVU really good, VCU on pause and got pg back, league is up for grabs, at large will require 15-3 or 16-2 which will be hard, FU really improved with transfers, portal will change everything and every night in the league is tough, STB has great support -they talked about difficult and interesting places to play and CFord mentioned his good friend Richard Pitino at New Mexico, CFord never coached or played at Duke, UNC or IU

  24. Nice win for the bills after a mini layoff. I didn’t think we played that great. We had no business losing to that team, we had 4/5ths of the talent on the court. However, it was the same thing against Belmont. Yuri is SPECIAL! He has really turned it around after that 3 game rough patch. I hope we can get a game in before the bonnies game. That will be a test, but I fear NO team in the A10. So excited I can even state that with confidence after losing our best player before the season. Awesome!

Working and managing in retail most of my life, staying home sick is/was never a thing. I've worked with broken bones, flu, pneumonia, etc. Anything outside of hospitalization is unacceptable. The general public has always turned a blind eye to this. All the bitching about Schnucks being closed for the holiday weekend this past week just indicates how out of touch most people are or how they look on certain types of workers as beneath them and shouldn't have the same standards that other professions do just because it makes it inconvenient.

  31. You were also saying it at the end of last season. The simple truth is that many people could not get past Hasahn’s free throw shooting and because that many of his other contributions were a little overlooked. Big men who can defend multiple positions, block shots, pass/handle the ball and rebound like that do not come to SLU very often. It could be a long time until we get another Hasahn French. With that said, big men like Okoro also do not come to the A10 very often, and Linssen has shown an ability to be an elite finisher. I’m a huge fan of our big man tandem and think the fact that we haven’t been lamenting French’s loss more is a credit to Marten, Franco and the coaching staff.

I think the larger decrease in attendance is the reality that people's routines and preferences have changed during the last (almost) two years.

  33. @BIG BILL FAN i don't think anyone is disputing that vaccine mandates are one reason attendance is lower. It obviously is causing some fans not to attend who would've attended otherwise. People are just pointing out that the reverse is also true that there are some people who wouldn't attend before the vaccine/negative test requirement who now feel more comfortable. That's OK if you disagree with the second group but they certainly exist whether you agree or not. The point being it's more likely to be a combination of factors, many of which are related to COVID, than SOLELY the vaccine/negative test requirement leading to low attendance.

  38. The current conference landscape is insane. It looks to me like more moves are imminent. A lot of under-the-radar conferences made moves while we were looking at the Valley, A10, and power conferences. OVC: I think it's actually 8 with the addition of Little Rock to EIU, SIUE, Morehead State, SEMO, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, and Tennessee-Martin. Still doesn't feel sustainable. CUSA: Losing 9 schools and adding 4. Liberty, Jacksonville State, New Mexico State, and Sam Houston State are in. Old Dominion, Marshall, Southern Miss, UAB, Florida Atlantic, Charlotte, North Texas, Rice, and UTSA are out. There will be 9 teams in the league after the moves. I don't get the ongoing existence of this league that never really made sense. The American is a stronger but just as weird CUSA, basically: Memphis, Wichita State, ECU, Tulsa, Temple, Tulane, SMU, and South Florida, plus FAU, UAB, Charlotte, UNT, Rice, and UTSA. Atlantic Sun: Liberty and Jacksonville State are leaving for CUSA, and Austin Peay is entering. This season, the ASUN is split into two divisions, East and West. WAC: Added almost half the Southland plus Southern Utah from the Big Sky. New Mexico State is finally leaving, as is newcomer Sam Houston State, both going to CUSA. Chicago State is leaving without a destination (and should probably go down a division). The WAC was a weird grab bag of schools that recently moved up to D-I or otherwise couldn't get in anywhere else and now it's a Texas-heavy southwestern conference. Sun Belt: Little Rock is out for the OVC, but the Sun Belt added James Madison (CAA) and Old Dominion, Marshall, and Southern Miss (CUSA). UT-Arlington is the only non-football school left and is still in talks with the Valley. Southland: Already lost a bunch to the WAC and Incarnate Word is heading there next. They are getting Texas A&M-Commerce from D-II next year but I don't see how this 8-team league lasts. Colonial: James Madison is leaving for the Sun Belt, motivated by football, so the league banned all JMU teams from competing in the conference tournament. Petty, but fair. The America East (Hartford, leaving D-I), WCC (BYU, B12), and Big Sky (Southern Utah, WAC) all lose a team.

  40. A nice win for The Bills and for me....There was uncertainty for SLU which created uncertainty for me. But the Bills played well enough to win and I nailed the point spread. What you don't know is I also had the exact score of the game. Also, not advising people on gambling but anytime you see a 3+ pt difference between me and Vegas....just saying.... It was not always pretty...but given the circumstances ...a good win. Let's see what happened....Bolded statements from original post.... Rich looks like a team that is fading. .... The stats showed it ....the game proved it how will the layoff affect the team?....we haven't played since Dec 18th. ..I made this statement because I feared the team would come out rusty....and they did look rusty especially from the arc. It wasn't just that we didn't have a game since 12/18 but almost no practice. That can make a difference in sharpness. 47/38/75... This was a miss from the arc... with 3 more 3s, we make the slash We need to dominate on rebs...we need to out rebound then by 7 ... This was a big miss ...we got out rebounded by a poor rebounding team...How did this happen ....2 factors...#1 I think we would have closed the gap had Linssen played... #2 Rust again...It looked to me like we did ok on blocking out but we were a step slow to getting the ball...again rust...we lost a step. Hold Burton, Golden and Gilyard to a combined 33 pts. ... This too didn't work out ...BUT... these 3 guys accounted for almost 3/4 of Rich pts and then they shot only 41%....2nd chances got them over 40%...so even though a lot of pts ...we still defended well....The good news is the rest of the team didn't do much...it usually takes more than 3 players to win a game. Hmm... well then how did we win? And to go with that question ...How did we close them out in the final minutes with a small lead? The answer to both questions is TOs. We need to try and match them on TOs. While they are great at protecting the ball, we come in at B+ in forcing TOs. I think that will be good enough to close the TO gap. ...The computer showed that they would have 4 less TOs than us...we needed to take care of the ball . We did...We beat them by 2 TOs and that was the ball game...a swing of 6 TOs in our favor was huge....It wasn't that that they had a bad TO game ...they only had 11...a good number but we had an outstanding 9.... of those 9 ...7 TOs came in the not so good 1st half. But only 2 in the 2nd half ...AND NONE IN THE FINAL 13 MIN (which means #1 stealer ITN had none down the stretch) . And that fellow board members is how you close out a game...all 3 of those blown wins in the last few games featured The Bills turning the ball over in the closing minutes of the game....No TOs in the final 13 mins is how you close a game out. Bottom line... a good win... even though we were a little off. With a few days of practice (maybe a week) we can sharpen up as we move into the meat of the conference schedule.

    2021-2022 Season

Why do we have to keep seeing all these arguments about how SLU is getting screwed by some supposedly powerful person or another (Pestello, May, Jones, Biden, Putin, AOC, Trump, the ghost of Harry Truman), when SLU has actually has less games postponed than most of our league and now most of the team won’t need to be tested for weeks? I don’t want to get into Covid vs Flu but if people had the flu they should quarantine too. This is something that should have been done pre Covid. There is no reason to go to work or school or any social gathering when you are sick and spread it around to everybody else. I know it is kind of a badge of honor to work through illness but it’s isn’t smart and it puts other people at risk. If you are sick and it is contagious stay at home. It doesn’t matter what the illness is.

Sincere question, why does it matter if there are 1, 3, or 5 players on the list? I certainly don't need to know. If the game is on, it is on. If the game is off, it is off.

    Here We Go Again

We are going to have to learn to live with COVID 19. It isn't going away no matter how many people get vaccinated. Right now we are going from the pandemic to the virus becoming endemic. If it follows the pattern of most viruses it will become even less severe than the omicron variant over time. I don't think it is smart to roll back all protocols at this time (as someone else suggested), because earlier more severe strains of COVID 19 are still circulating and we don't know everything about omicron yet. Many protocols need to be changed now, but that is going to be a hard sell to college administrators who have bought into the fallacy that zero COVID policies can be successful. It will be interesting to see how long a large segment of society that is really scared and believes in zero COVID policies takes to adjust to the reality that COVID is never going away. Our leaders have really done the public a disservice. They have known the almost certain reality that COVID was never going away since the early months of this pandemic, but acted like we could defeat the virus. They should have long ago been preparing the public for a goal of surviving the pandemic phase of the virus and getting to the point where we live in the world where people live with a virus that has become much less deadly.

  48. In the past 10 years I have visited all of the A10 venues except Rhode Island, Richmond, George Mason, GW, & UMass. I can't imagine any of those places being anywhere near comparable to us. The only places in the A10 that compete with us are VCU and Dayton. I think we are better than them. I think we get downgraded in the league because we are still the new guys. Any objective list we are at minimum top 2. Certainly there are things they could do better. I don't like the new bar. I don't like the exclusivity. I also feel like they are wasting the Lorenzini space with this new area only catering to Billiken Club members. I've alway said there just isn't a SLU feel in the arena. Too many blank walls where we should have shrines to Easy Ed, AB, Claggs etc.

    GDT - Tha Spidahhhs

Over the past 50 years, how many of our 3rd string centers would have scored as fluidly as Traore did from that sweet Nesbitt pass? The answer is easy: none of them. Heck, a significant amount of our 2nd string 5’s would have found a way to turn the ball over…
