Recruiting - 2016

Recommended Posts

Old guy didn't Dayton get deep in the ncaa tourney a couple of years ago playing like 6 players? If you look at most teams minutes played, most teams only play 7 or 8 man rotations. Crews playing everyone the last couple of seasons was flat out stupid. Ford will be fine with a short bench. We won't be good regardless. If practice is your concern the transfers are allowed to practice and if anything the fact they are better than our active roster will only make our active roster better practicing against them every day.

Those of you in a rush to take Hines scholarship away, I am somewhat surprised you are ready to take his scholarship but let about half the roster that was obviously worse and behind him on the depth chart keep their gift. Hines hascholarship proven he is more worthy than a lot of the team. Let's just worry about the roster down the road and concentrate on 2017 and beyond.

As long as everyone is in the same page and we all agree next season is going to be a disaster similar to the last two years, all is fine. In terms of the aristocratic Brits we are about to re enact, in a Missouri basketball setting, the charge of the light brigade. We will wait for 2017-2018 to see how much we have improved. I assume that being in the same page means nobody is going to be calling for Ford's head in a platter after we fall flat in our faces next season.

However, it is not fair to put the burden on Crawford and Bartley to play their hearts out this year, despite whatever happens to their soft tissue injuries, if it is already accepted we are fated to go down in 2016-2017 as a grand finale to Crew's legacy. Or in terms of the light brigade's charge, sending them to slaughter which is to be accepted by the players in the name and honor of the SLU Bills. And again in terms of the Brits, aristocratic snobs with black hearts that they are, this coming season will become a ritual, after which we will all raise our glasses and proclaim: "The team is dead, long live the team."

Somehow I do not like this line of thinking. Somehow I think that no effort should be spared to get the team some bright freshman player that will give us hopes to get better than the last two years have been, instead of decimating the current roster to build up next year's. However, what do I know, I am just an MBM with a soft heart for the Bills.

Roy, I agree with you about Hines. I think he work extremely hard to get that scholarship, and I think last year he proved himself to be worthy of it. Some people are stuck in the semantics: Hines was a walk on, therefore he cannot be good enough for the team, or so it goes. And yes, Daytom played a 6 player rotation into the NCAA a couple of years ago, but their players were not our players, and their coach was not our coach...

This situation does not apply if we are manage to get a new commitment from someone that will play next season and who is highly ranked, however we will shoot ourselves in the foot if we accept another transfer redshirt for next year.

It's the middle of May. The only way a highly ranked high school player (because there aren't really grad transfer rankings) is available now is if they have some baggage. Expecting such a thing is like going into a store the afternoon of Christmas Eve expecting to find the year's hot toy that sold out a week after Thanksgiving.

When you were raised as a young teenager with nothing, you never lose the hope to find the hot toy on sale on Christmas Eve. When you give up because statistically the probabilities look bad against you, you have lost a piece of your ability to move forward and to rejoice when good things happen. Look at Bernie, do you find him inspiring or do you consider him simply as a hard headed ancient looking obstruction in the path of this election? My other question is who has no baggage? Quoting Christ on this one, "let the one free of all baggage to be the first to post in this blog."

WoW! Nice .. politics AND religion from the same post line. What a refreshing breathe of air over soft tissue injuries. Stick to basketball.

Wasn't Yarbrough one of those guys with baggage? A late signee who was available for what now appears to be obvious reasons? Just saying.

I have no expectations for this coming year. No one should bash on Ford for playing with the decimated slop left behind by CrewSplatt. In reality, no one should even really begin to worry about the following year outside of gradual progress. If this team reaches 11 wins next year, I will be surprised. Not happy but surprised. This team lost a combined 26.8 ppg on a team that only scored 65.8 ppg. That's 41% up and gone. That in and of itself is a large hole to dig out of. The makeup of the roster is a disaster. We still have no real point guard ergo this vehicle has no engine. We have no rebounding to speak of. We have three skinny butt white guys who all could be considered "projects." There is a real question whether or not one of our two freshmen will even enroll. And there is a very good possibility that all our "help" will be in street clothes wearing red shirts for the whole season.

No, next year is another year of unrestricted giving from the CrewSplatt Project. I will be looking for individual progress as my measure of success for next year. There is very little left to rate otherwise. We will visit the A10 PIG games another year running. This program is back to Grawer - Year 1. The CrewsSplatt legacy there is undeniable.

-as I have written, my expectations for the upcoming season are very modest but TFord is selling the future of the program to what looks like solid pieces of a roster, I have quite a positive mindset about our program, incredibly more positive compared to where it was on March 8th

If nothing else, Ford is giving us hope for the future in that he appears to be able to deliver real talent vs the marginal talents we've seen the last three years.

Honestly, I think we might struggle to get to double digit Ws this year. Our most reliable player, Crawford, is coming off an injury. And the two stick figure bigs we have are also coming off injuries, not that I think injury recovery is a real big factor in their cases, ie marginal is marginal is marginal.

No last minute signing of a FR is going to help us avoid the upcoming trainwreck. Not unless it's Tatum who decides to bail on Duke, which is about as likely to happen as Hillary suddenly deciding to be truthful. So, keep going after transfers and a good, if not great, 17 class. In Travis we trust. What other choice do we have?

I get what you're saying, but I also think Ford will really help our guards. I bet he'll know how to use MB and Roby much better than Crews. Also we should still expect big/bigger things from Crawford and Reggie. It will all come down to the 5 spot. If we can see some basic consistency there I think we win more than expected, otherwise yes, it may be a bad year.

Antwan Walker is leaning toward prep school, according to his HS coach, who seemed to be pushing that route from the start. NC State, Virginia Tech, and Georgetown are his top three if he chooses to go to college this year; with that kind of top three, I'm not sure what's in prep school for him - academics, maybe? A little more physical growth. He's young for his class, and I believe he has yet to take his SAT.

Not sure who the freshman is that "we are not even sure will enroll" is - if it is Moore then I think you can figure that will happen given that we have heard nothing up till now to the contrary. Yes next year will be interesting. What happened to the "no politics" on the board.

I prefer the straight-shooting honesty of TRUMP!

Regarding Hines, I'm not sure what Jesus would think, but I suspect Crews offered the kid a scholarship because he had an open scholarship and promised him nothing beyond this past season. Rather than "save a scholarship" a la Sodie, he probably decided to do something nice for a walk on... similar to RM giving Daniel Lisch a year of a free education. If Ford can find somebody better I'm not going to feel sorry for Hines. I'm sure the kid knew the deal. BTW, it appears Hines may be in the twitter picture Ford just sent out this morning, so perhaps he is intending to stick on as a walk-on?

Trump comes right out and admits you can't believe a word he says. That makes it much different from lying.

Hines seemed to appreciate the opportunity to start on a D1 (sorta) team for half a season on scholarship, so maybe he will pay it back with one more season on the practice squad. Yes, the whole team was bad, but he was clearly the most overmatched of all our overmatched guards, at least on offense.

Not sure if it's been mentioned here or not, but Johnson, Henriquez, and Foreman have all signed their letters for SLU. Not breaking news exactly, but it's nice to see things made official.

Yes. Next year will be another rough year. How rough is still up in the air.

Negatives:

Yes, we lose Ash, Milik, Miles and Brett and 41% of our scoring which was not exactly robust.

Positives:

A new and positive attitude will be instilled to help the team which greatly lacked from bad attitudes, no respect for the coach, questionable lineups, systems and plays and a coaching staff with shattered confidences and took the fun out of the game.

A solid coach and new faces who might help their first year.

But the best argument for a decent upcoming year is the fact that marginal to decent D1 players and role players usually find a way to step up and make a difference in their Junior and Senior years. Yes, Our Juniors and Seniors are not NBA bound - but we should have guys who have played alot, who will be more savvy than some of their opponents and who should be able to exploit some weaker teams and/or teams with less experience. And if our guys can develop or regain confidence, anything is possible in that upset and great performances are plentiful in college basketball.

Losing scoring doesnt really bother me at all when we are objectively terrible in all aspects. Someone has to score, you could put the Sigma Chi A team out there and some combination of people were going to score 41% of our points. Unless we are coming off some successful campaign, the "replacing scoring" worry bead is pretty much a red herring.

??? -- Zeke Moore. He's not Ford's recruit. Stranger things have happened, that's all. No insight one way or the other.

Frankly, worrying about replacing 431% of our scoring is not so much a major concern or red herring as our overall skill set when it comes to offensive talent. It has to come from the current roster as I see it. Nothing against Moore and Johnson just no over-inflated expectations either. Crawford has scored, but he's also been flustered when opposing defense key on him. Reggie is Reggie and not going to all of a sudden double his output in his last year. Bishop was inconsistent, he could improve but he won't be an unknown next year. Roby and Bartley are each wildly inconsistent but maybe. All the others are so low, up is the only way they can go but will they? And eventually, there will be injuries, foul trouble, tired legs, short bench. Just going to be a tough year, that's all.

Guys, please cut the politics right away so we don't have to babysit it.

Take it to facebook; it always works well there. ;)

The board is just getting ready for the summer Billiken basketball discussion dead period, so getting in the fun discussions while everyone is still around...
