Recruit

Recruit (1/7)

  1. Even though they weren't fired (but were probably on the hot seat), Dana Altman and Greg McDermott both moved from a major conference to a lesser one with great results. Especially with Altman.
  2. I thought Earl would know and ran across this article. William would have made a great addition to that 73 Billiken team. I remember watching a Billiken game, I believe in 1973 at the Kiel against Memphis. I had great seats behind the Billiken bench. SLU built about a 20 point half time lead. Larry Finch almost brought Memphis back in the second half but SLU hung on for victory. I'm positive that team had Rogers, Martinez, Leonard, Paradoski, and I can not remember the 5th starter. Must be getting old. Hope this link works. http://www.stlamerican.com/sports/local_sports/article_e0f54b5b-ea3f-5196-b76e-ac9d39cb8c57.html?mode=jqm
  3. Ha Ha. I knew someone would do this. But wasn't there a James Brown who played way back then?
  4. Torch - wasn't James Brown who also played for SLU on that team also. Very well said about Easy Ed.
  5. Billikens play great defense. Not so sure what Seton Hall was playing was great Defense. Seton Hall had huge players and they used that size to their advantage. They sort of reminded me of Saluki teams who would see how much physical play they could get by with. Their backup point guard played a great game though. My dream game is Creighton and SLU in the championship of the NCAA. Three overtimes with Jordair Jett scoring on his one of his patented drives overcoming Doug McDermott's 55 points. Nice to dream.
  6. Jordair reminds me of Bob Gibson when he was on the mound. All business, competitive, wants the ball in tough situations. I like Billiken Rich's comment " hits the winning shot and then gets in line to shake hands rather than thumping his chest and making a spectacle of himself". Gibson sets the record for strikeouts in the 68 series, McCarver comes out to tell him and gets yelled at to get back behind the plate. Regardless of the final outcome of this Billikens season, I will always remember like I do for Gibson's 1.12 era, 15 game winning streak, and those 17 strikeouts, not for the final game of the 68 season. For a almost 50 year Billiken fan it doesn't get any better than this.
  7. I really enjoyed reading these posts about Charlie Ries. It sure brought back memories. Perhaps someone could verify something for me. I attended that great Notre Dame game in 1970-71. But the Freshman were playing when I arrived at the arena. I am almost certain they beat the Missouri Freshman team that night and I remember Ries and Dangos playing in that game and having very good nights but I only saw the end of the game. Also I hadn't realized that Versace was an assistant. I do remember some of the players that came in right before I left for the service. I believe some of the names were Vallott, Nance, and Eric Jones. I think they were all Chicago players.
  8. Junie played for Rich Grawer. Had some injuries which plagued him.
  9. He only had 3 seniors. He did suspend a player during the season and no one was really sure what his status would be for next season. He had some recruits coming in, a 7 footer from Iowa. I just think he felt it was time to move on.
  10. I wouldn't get to depressed about the attendance. Went to the CIT game last night between Creighton and South Dakota. Creighton normally draws about 15 or 16,000 per game. They played the game at a different location, their old home, the Civic and drew 4500 with about 500 or so South Dakota fans. It did seem like a preseason exhibition game but I thought the atmosphere was great as both teams bands were there and I got to sit closer to the action. I would almost have to say I enjoyed the game just as much or more than any game I went to during the season. I did see Indiana State earlier in the season and they didn't look good but were pesky and hung in the game.
