doowop
I just watched a tape of the Billikens playing Memphis in a game that went overtime. Playing for SLU was Josh Fischer, Marquee? Perry, Justin Tatum, Matt Baniak, Chris? Heinrich, Chris Braun, Chris Sloan, and a player whose last name is Edwin. Does anyone remember what Edwin's first name is and what kind of career he had at SLU. I remember him playing but, I don't remember his talent level. What year was it? kshoe
Jason Edwin played two years for SLU before flunking out. I believe he was a freshman that year, which was 2000-01 (the year after the miracle in Memphis). The team went 17-14 and likely should have been better. Maurice Jeffers was the best player on the team that season. http://www.billikens.com/node/16 http://www.billikens.com/node/

VeniceMenace
Still playing at age 32: http://basketball.latinbasket.com/player/Jason_Edwin/Bucaros_Freskaleche/5705This link includes his stats from both SLU and Kent State: http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Jason-Edwin-29779/stats/ Saw him in the old annual high school shootout when he played for Warsaw, IL, high school, smooth player. He made a few top 100 recruiting lists when Romar got him.
doowop
Thank you kshoe and VeniceMenace. I forgot to mention Maurice Jeffers. He looked good in this particular game. One of our better juco transfers.

willie
Not to take anything from Justin Love but David Burns is the best name on that list. As much as Roy loved Justin I think he might agree with me.
Billikenbooster
I was always a Charlie Newberry guy. Great distributor, glue guy. Ran a great fast break. Maybe not the best individual stats like Burns but a very good player. Think he deserves to be in the top half of that list.

Probably top 5 for both.

Even playing there before the civil war but after 2005 must have been a real experience. The coach must have "droned" on about so many things. I wonder how many times the translator had to pull Edwin "assad" and explain what the coach had said. I'm sure Edwin was thinking that when he walked into some of the eating places they were already using chemical weapons.
thetorch
Top 10 best JUCO transfers? Justin Love Maurice Jeffers David Burns Kelvin Henderson Kenny Brown Barry Eberhardt Carl Turner David Robinson Charles Newberry Carvin Norman Interesting topic. I'd go like this #1 Burns - Last Billiken named Conference POY. #2 Henderson - Named Metro 1st team all conference twice. #3 Dobbs - GMC newcomer of the year first season, all conference 2nd team sr year #4 Love - 1st team All CUSA, best player on the miracle at memphis run #5 Burden - All MCC his jr year. #6 Jeffers - 2nd team CUSA #7 Dillard - Best player on a couple bad teams. #8 Newberry - Lead guard for Bonner's best seasons #9 Norman - Forgot about him till Taj mentioned him. rebounder, defender, scorer on two crappy teams, Burden's final squad and Gray and Douglas' first #10 Nobody else I can recall were team leaders more role players like Eberhart, Newbourne, Brown, Fergerson, Turner, Craig, Frericks, Al-Matiin, Tony Manuel, David Robinson, & Donnie Campbell. These guys were all about the same, bench guys, occasional starters, maybe good at one thing or in cases like Eberhart had one great game, or in Newborne's case none. All other JUCO players were pretty much bums. On second thought scratch Newborne, he belongs with the bums. Was Mike Lockette, Bill Morris, Craig Shaver, or Carlos Martinez a JUCo? Before my time, also Kevin Footes? Was he a JUCO? If Footes was he is #9 or #10. I don't know if I block this out or what but I always think Larry Simmons was a JUCO. Then I see he played here for 4 years riding the pine, taking up a scholarship. What a nightmare.
thetorch
Newberry was a transfer? Not questioning just don't remember. Where did he come from? Newberry played one year at the BAC.
Taj79
I think I pulled a brain cramp and subbed Robinson for Dobbs. Dobbs is definitely Top Ten and supplants Robinson. Newberry was BAC (pre-SWIC name change). Burden was there as I left. Do not recall him being a JUCO but now that he's listed, I seem to recall something along those lines about him --- some reason he only played three years for SLU. My listings were more who I remembered and were not rankings. Even if any of those guys in thebottom of torch's post were indeed JUCO's, they ain't making my list. I know Shaver was there during my time as well. From Louisville, Ky, I believe. Never amounted to much. Craig was great to party with. Simmons was out of Texas and I don't recall him going the JUCO route. Manual and Tadysak and Ivester were three of the biggest JUCO busts ever ---- all in the same class too. I remember all three gaining top five rankings somewhere (Street & Smith'S) and their collective failure made for one of the biggest letdowns ever in my Billiken following. willie
I'm pretty sure Shaver signed as a freshmen. He transferred out after 1 or 2 years. Morris transferred here after 3 years at Illinois. Morris was a big time high school recruit who never lived up to the hype.
AGB91
Abdur Rahim Al Mattin was the first big recruit for Grawer. Not very polished but a 6' 8" big framed center.
WUH
Justin Love is my favorite transfer, and possibly my favorite Billiken, because of his role in the wins over Kansas and Cincy. The win over Kansas was probably the most exciting game I have ever seen live.
cheeseman
Newberry had a nice career for a transfer. Ferricks would have had a nice career until his asthma did him in.
slu72
Love came here hoping to play alongside the Legend. That would have been something to see. Elite 8 at the minimum.

thetorch
I remember Footes. He was very good, didn't have his head on straight like most on those late grawer rosters. Can't recall if he was juco or not.
doowop
I'm pretty sure Shaver signed as a freshmen. He transferred out after 1 or 2 years. Morris transferred here after 3 years at Illinois. Morris was a big time high school recruit who never lived up to the hype. Billy Morris was a high school all American from Beaumont. Played against David Brent, Marshall Rogers, and Harry Rogers in high school, former Sumner greats. As willie said, he never lived up to the hype. thetorch
Yes, Footes was a juco transfer. Then Footes goes to #8. Morris averaged 17 a game for the Bills. One of the better Jr seasons in SLU history. I guess he was supposed to be an NBA talent. That 88-89 team had 8 new players, a transfer Todd Starks, 3 JUCOs Tadysak, Manuel, Ivester & 4 freshman Don Braun, Chip Entwhistle, Vincent Smith, & George "With A J" Wallace. Possibly the worst Billiken recruiting class ever. To top it off Grawer hired Jackson Wheeler as a 3rd Asst to lock down these new "Big Time" JUCOs and they all bust. Entwhistle - gone after 1 season, 12 games, 20 minutes, 3 made baskets Wallace - Bench player for 3 seasons before getting kicked off the team for theft. Smith - Started and played as a freshman then got hurt or was kicked off the team early sophomore year. Braun - Was better at Baseball. Somehow started a couple games. STIFF Ivester - Couldn't beat out Tadysak as a starter, nuff said Starks - Somehow went from All Valley conference as a sophomore at Ill St to benchwarmer at SLU as a SR. Tadysak - On a short list of worst Billikens to ever put on a uniform. Worst part is he got hurt before his sr year, Grawer let him redshirt and come back. Manuel - The stud of this class, Preseason pick for MCC newcomer of the year. Averages a soft 10 points a game and then vanishes. He may have gotten hurt or just left school. Al Matiin was my favorite as a youngster, him and Pee Wee. Matiin was 28 by the time his career was over. Did 5 years in the armed forces before starting to play college ball. Best Billiken shotblocker not named Willie.
