According to an NCAA report released in August, expenses exceeded generated revenue in the past decade at all but 20 of 345 Division I schools reporting.

All 20 schools in the black are members of the Football Bowl Subdivision (highest level). But there is great financial disparity even among the biggest fish in college sports.

Overall in those 10 years, generated revenues grew by 83 percent at FBS schools, while expenses were up 115 percent. FBS schools are a median 73 percent self-sufficient.
