slufan13
Anyone able to make the game? Looks like we had the better stats, but hoping to get a report on any individual players and how the team looked as a whole Thanks Thought you would've been there. It was a pretty massive crowd for a preseason game. Started in a 3-4-3. David Andre in goal. Filip Pasivic, Anthony Manning, Julian Gieseke in back. Raymond Lee, Tyler David, Francisco Vizcaino, and Marco Heskamp at midfield. David Graydon, Robbie Kristo, Kingsley Bryce up top. Formation was very fluid. Graydon and Kingsley dropped back to the midfield a lot. Looked like Kristo was somewhat of a target man. Kristo had a couple of nice flick-ons to Lee and Bryce racing down the field. Heskamp and Lee were both very active basically playing box to box. Lee had a couple of nice runs down the side and brought the ball into the box but no one was there for him. Heskamp did the same from the right side and probably set up our best chances. Tyler David was all over the center of the field. Vizcaino was invisible for the majority of the game in my opinion, but he does seem to find the ball near the goal so that's a plus. The back line looked solid. Manning had one really bad giveaway that led to a breakaway. Breakaway was really poorly executed by Notre Dame, but Andre made a solid save. Bryce was named captain and seemed to outwork pretty much everyone. Graydon was creative, but ND closed down on him very quickly and he didn't have many options. Max Karcher and Joe Saad subbed in at half I think. Neither did a ton. ND probably had the best individual chance of the game, but SLU definitely had more chances and looked to probably be the better team. I thought the team's movement off the ball was outstanding and they looked close to in sync for the most part. Andre looks like a really solid keeper. A little shaky and not super confident, but commands the box well. I like the 3 in the back and with Heskamp, Lee, and Tyler David all getting back, I expect the defense to be really good. I do question our speed. We're going to have to be tactically strong and make smart runs because we don't have a blow by you guy really. Almost all of our action started on the wings with Heskamp and Lee. I'd still like to see Graydon move back to the center midfield and link up with those 2 guys outside, but at the same time, we have 2 big and strong center mids right now that don't really get knocked off the ball. The schedule is more than manageable this season. I think a tournament win or 2 is a realistic expectation. Will definitely need someone to prove themselves coming in off the bench, but the starters seem to be really solid all around.
slufanskip
Thanks for the report. I'm surprised with a 3-4-3 also. Had long time plans, so couldn't make it. Hearing we played so well, I'm really disapointed now.
slufan13
Thanks for the report. I'm surprised with a 3-4-3 also. Had long time plans, so couldn't make it. Hearing we played so well, I'm really disapointed now. Once the game got going, the front 5 guys didn't really have an obvious formation. Constant moving and changing. Got the feeling listening to some conversations that Notre Dame lost a lot from last year's team, but regardless I thought we looked impressive. SaintLouBlue
Agree with the above analysis. Felt like we controlled the ball for a majority of the game. Pretty sure Kristo hit the cross bar on a header off a corner. Goalie may have had it covered. Overall SLU had more chances. To me, it felt like the only way ND was going to score was on a quick counter. Didn't feel like they were able to build up from the back as well as SLU. SLUBALLS
ND returns nine starters from a national championship team per collegesoccernews. Certainly a team that can do things this year. Good to hear we more than held our own. Skip, a three back system has been slowly resurrected at the pro level. It's been a reaction to the four back system that was the norm for many years and you've seen teams look to be more proactive in their attack. The team I coach used a three back system a couple years ago and I have seen multiple opponents use it as well. Not surprised to see SLU use it. Hell SLU used a three back system with Nick Gannon and Marty Tappel ten+ years ago. But it takes the right personnel to pull it off because you have lost a man on the back line. You can't have a midfield that doesn't "work" defensively. Biggest question mark this year for SLU is in goal. Surprised to hear Graydon was up top. He is the clear creator on the team so he needs touches.

Heskamp started every game at right back these last 2 years so he fits in well. He looks good joining the attack from the outside though so this is a good spot for him. Same with Lee. Graydon was announced as a forward and lined up as one to start but he dropped back a lot throughout the game. Still, he seems trapped on the left side of the field. Just don't want to take a whole side of the field away from him.
SLUBALLS
Agreed on Graydon. Remember though that mcginty experimented with Graydon early last year before putting him at attacking mid for most of the year. Not surprised to see mcginty do it again. 13, you mentioned there was more movement by the team. Can you elaborate? I know what you mean in general but what was different about it versus last year? Also are we pressing high?

Not surprised to see mcginty do it again. 13, you mentioned there was more movement by the team. Can you elaborate? I know what you mean in general but what was different about it versus last year? Also are we pressing high? Much more fluid and constant. Guys always running to an open space and giving a good angle to pass. The team seemed really in sync for a preseason game. A couple of times, a defender would send ball to Kristo just inside midfield and he'd flick on to Kingsley who was streaking down and Kingsley could touch it over to Heskamp or Raymond Lee who made good delayed runs. Then that spot was immediately filled by someone else. It didn't always work, but we seemed to really anticipate the game well. It's hard to describe exactly, especially on a message board, but we just looked more in sync than the majority of last season. As far as pressing high, I can't really remember. Notre Dame played a ton in the center of the field all grouped together so they completed a lot of short little passes so I'm not really sure how you defend that other than to just try to clog it up even more. Really we were getting 8-9 guys forward and 8-9 guys back. Andre worries me in goal. He appears to have a high skill level, but just seems very inexperienced. Hope he gets better as the season goes on. Distribution is a little shaky but honestly he could just roll the ball out to anyone on the back line. We use those 3 defenders a lot to switch the field when we have the ball anyway. Looks like we play at Illinois-Chicago tonight. Live stats should be available. Then JeffCo on Saturday. We beat JeffCo 9-1 in the spring so that will definitely be the chance to see everyone.
SLUBALLS
Lost 3-2 to uic. We were up 1-0 at halftime but allowed three in second before grabbing a second late. 22 players used last night including two different goalies. Lots of young guys played in second half when uic scored. Manning and David did not play. We were still able to get four corners in second half. http://www.uicflames.com/sports/m-soccer/recaps/082014aab.html

McGinty seemed willing to empty his bench against Notre Dame so no surprise that we had all those guys play last night. I expect the same against JeffCo. SLUBALLS
First half Andre Gienske (sp). manning Karcher Heskp juco kid lee Francisco Graydon Bryce Kristo SLU creating serious width with lee and heskamp. Both camp out on sidelines when SLU has it. Most of play coming down flanks. Multiple free kicks and cks but nothing came of it. Best chance saw buildup down left, ball across to heskamp who put perfect ball on ground to back post but Francisco couldn't get to it on the slide Pk called after great run by heskamp down goal line. Francisco gets it to his feet. Created space, fired and it guys hands. Pk. Kristo saved. Keeper guessed right but Kristo put no pace on it. Graydon hits incredible shot with left. Curls places it to upper left from 30ish top of box. Goalie completely outstretched. 33rd minute Kristo hits well placed free kick from 19 out but keeper makes great diving save. Not surprising but SLU with majority of possession.
SLUBALLS
Second half. Sacha otte takes over in goal. Freshman from Germany Same lineup otherwise FK after Bryce taken down hard 35 out. Graydon serves. Keep and SLU players go up and knock each other over. gGienske gets the trash goal. Might get chippy now since Jeff co keeper is out with injury. Alreaddy saw some tough tackles. SLUBALLS
Crazy to see the amount of turnover on the team since McGinty's first class. (Glendale HS/Indiana), Christian Briggs, D, FR, Arima, Trinidad & Tobago (St. Mary's), Jordan Gladstone, GK, FR, Katy, Texas (Seven Lakes)*, Dillon Saffle, GK, RS-FR, Sammamish, Wash. (Skyline/Central Florida) Sito Sasieta, MF, FR, St. Louis, Mo. (Chaminade)) 2011: Hansel Reyes (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit Prep), defender Brendan Westerfield (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade). 2012 class: Richie Hoffman (St. Louis, Mo./SLUH/Loyola Chicago) Donte Brangman (Bermuda/Montverde [Fla.] Academy), Patrick Conroy (O'Fallon, Mo./DeSmet), Isaac Fraley (Tulsa, Okla./Jenks), Jair Minors (Bermuda/Montverde [Fla.] Academy), Dirk van der Velde(Turlock, Calif./Pitman) and Evan Wright (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley). Any word on Tyler David? Is he hurt?

kwyjibo
Go SLU! Unfortunately, SLU needs every win it can get. The schedule is pretty weak (by SLU's historic standards at least). Despite missing out on the tournament last year largely because of scheduling (OK they could always have one a game or two more), SLU puts themselves to be in a position where they need to win. Louisville is supposed to be real good this year and hopefully VCU and George Mason have big non-conference results. Unfortunately bigger names like Tulsa, Indiana, and Creighton are not currently in the top 25 but hopefully will be succesful when not playing the Billikens.
