  1. Great topic, Steve. I've often talked about "robotic" voters who walk into a voting booth and have no idea what's on the ballot. But...I'm old-fashioned so I bought a paperback copy of the book. Can't wait to read it. Good luck. I hope it becomes required reading.
  2. Is it time for the NCAA to have two separate tournaments...one for Power 5 (or 7) and a different one for the "Mid-Majors"? The NCAA does it in football with FBS and FCS. It seems that it is becoming more and more difficult for the non-power conferences to get more than one team into the NCAA Tournament. The selection committee is more than happy to award 8 or 9 teams from the Big !0 or Big 12. If I'm watching the tournament I'd much rather see the first or second place team from the MVC or OVC, or the A-10 than the 9th place team from some power conference. Why can't the NIT become the national tournament for the non-power conferences?
  3. I have to say I was confused by the lack of substitutions by SLU. Everyone prior to the game was talking about how the Bonnies only sub one or two guys, which proved to be true last night. Three of their players played all 40 minutes, and because of foul trouble, Osunniyi and Couliblay split their 40 minutes 26 to 14. Adaway came out for three minutes early in the first half, but then never came out again. I truly thought Ford would empty the bench to run the Bonnies out of the gym. That never happened. Jones never got in (I don't know if there was a health issue), Williams was wasted in his five minutes, and that was it. Now, SLU has to play at St. Bonaventure with players that are not rested. I know the Bonnies went into a zone, but SLU, well Collins, just stood and dribbled, rarely kicking it out. To me, SLU wasted a chance to show they are an elite team in the A-10.
  4. I agree. He is 2nd on the all-time for wins, plus he did rescue the program. He did fall short of taking the program to the next level, but except for a few instances the program is about the same level as when Coach Grawer ran the team.
  5. Thanks, Steve for your efforts on this. I usually bomb out of the NCAA brackets by the 2nd weekend, so maybe I'll be luckier on this one...especially if THE BILLS go all the way!
  6. Beaumont actually had 14 guys go on to play MLB, plus about 5 guys go to the NFL (including Mizzou's Joe Moore, an absolute stud of a running back). At one time Beaumont had the most students play in the Major Leagues than any other high school. Besides feeding Stockham Post 245 with most of the players on the 1956 national championship team, Beaumont also won 2 state baseball championships. No, I did not go to Beaumont (I went to the old McBride H.S.), but coach Ray Elliott was a legend.
  7. Papal, you beat me to it. I began attending Billiken games in the late 50's, so your list for that era is spot on. One of my favorite SLU teams was the MVC Tri-Champ team of '70-'71 with Irving Rogers, Bill Paradoski, Carlos Martinez, Rich Stallworth, the late Mike Lockett and big Bob Wade.Although the late Robin Jones is hardly a blip in the SLU record books, he did back up Bill Walton with the Portland Trailblazers when they won the NBA championship. I think it is tougher to pick 9 Billikens from the recent/current era. Justin Love and Marque Perry would definitely have to be on mine, along with all of the guys everyone else has mentioned.
  8. 3,4, 8 Bonner because he was all-everything; Jett because he was an A-10 POY, and Goodwin because he controls everything on the floor. The only reason I didn't pick Hughes is that he was only a one-year guy.
  9. My guess would be Cliff Hagan (or L'il Abner, as Buddy Blattner used to call him) because he played for Coach Rupp at Kentucky. I'm also anxiously awaiting tomorrow night's game. Heck, it will help me get the nervous jitters out of MY system.
  10. Well, since Pistol mentioned me in his testimonial, I guess I should also. I began following SLU basketball around '60. Bennington was the coach and resided in ST. Luke's parish, where my family also lived. The Nordmann brothers were the big draw although I thought even as a kid that Donnell Reid was even better than Cincinnati's Big O. My dad's company had season tickets to both the Hawks and SLU, so I saw many games at the old Kiel throughout my youth. John Smith, who went to McBride H.S. became a quick fave (my dad and brother went there and so did I, eventually). SLU's baseball coach "recruited" me for baseball (actually he just asked if I had committed to a college and when I said I was going to SLU he assured me a spot on the baseball team - took awhile to get some of the very minor scholarship money they had for baseball). Missed a total of two basketball games in my four years (and only one SLU hockey game) and have just continued to attend games ever since. It's only been since Chaifetz opened I actually have the tickets in my name, but I have lived and (mostly) died with this team for almost 60 years. I've kind of gotten accustomed to the lows of the program, but that just makes the highs (like winning four games in four days) so incredibly sweet!
  11. Gee, according to the talking heads at ESPN the game is already over with Va. Tech winning handily. C'mon Bills show the Hokies how to play D, then bury them!
  12. Whoa! Your personal grudges aside, the article is a very positive reflection on volunteer work being done by a SLU recruit. Why can't you accept that for what it is?
  13. Besides being an outstanding basketball player, Yuri Collins is a willing and generous volunteer to improve the neighborhood around St. Mary's High School. Attached is a link to an article in the St. Louis Review in which the entire St. Mary's basketball team assisted the community in a housing initiative to improve the neighborhood. Not only did the team work all day clearing out houses, they did this the morning after their victory in the district championship. As Yuri says in the article, "Anything the community wants us to do, whenever anybody needs something for us to do, we just get up and do the job." Welcome to SLU, Yuri. You are a class act that reflects they type of person that Travis is recruiting. https://www.archstl.org/catholic-community-responds-to-need-for-decent-housing-3739
  14. Stupid autocorrect...obviously I mean Ingvi.
  15. Is he injured? He wasn’t at practice yesterday and he’s not at the pre-game warmup.
