Recruit (1/7)

  1. These are indeed juco players for 08 roster. Check them out at JucoJunction under PF.
  2. Juco Junction reports we are in the running for 6-8 Richard Anderson, 6-9 Sam Dower and 6-6 Leon Powell. All are rated 3 stars.
  3. Since 1970. I was on the board of the Billiken Club when we raised money for exotic things such as buying the team a road meal other than at McDonald's. The Billiken Club at that time was the lastline of defense against an administration that was thinking D-3. Since then myself and 3 friends make a 110 mile round trip for each game. It's been good and it's been bad, but it has always been Billiken B-ball.
  4. Now that all has been said regarding a great effort by the team, I thought we ought to applaud the Band. It is such a pleasure to hear the National Anthem played well, rather than hear a "with it" caterawlling by a semi-talented vocalist. Kudo's to Mike and the band.
  5. Getting back to the basic proposition: Fully funding all scholarships would not add any students to the U--Fact Scholarships for those student athletes would cost the U only for room and board, books and fees--Fact The athletic programs of a university are the cheapest and best public relations tools and generate added alumni contributions--Fact Additional alumni giving allows for salary increases for the staff--Fact Trying full athletic scholarship for all sports for a 5 year trial would be considered a low cost low risk stategy with potential high returns in any normal business setting--Fact. If anyone is close to Fr.B, please propose this as a good business strategy and a sign to the loyal alums that he is committed to the athletic department. His rewards shall be ten fold. Absolute final rant!
  6. The electricity, water and other fixed overhead items when spresd over 5-6000 undergrads is miniscule. Room and board are the only variable overhead items. The number of scholarships necessary to cover the full allotment for all sports (55-60)would not close out classes or overly burden the university facilities. The point being, that from a budget standpoint charging a scholarship at full value against the athletic budget is an accounting myth. When balanced against the pr and advertising benefits it is vitually -0-. As in any business, there is no gain without risk, and this would be a very small financial risk for the university in real dollars. End of second rant.
  7. This is topic that has vexed me for the last 30 years. In the dim past when I was active and on the board of the tip-off club and attended meetings with the adminstration regarding bball and other sports. A scholarship, other than room and board, at a university of 10000-12000 enrollment is nothing more than an accounting entry. An additional 20-30 scholarships costs the U nothing. No additional instructors needbe hired, no additional classrooms need constructed etc. Hockey was lost based on the full cost of scholarships, not the actual cost. The program was operating with a positive cash flow and had become nationally prominent. The bball budget back then, due to the accounting myth, required fund raisers and personal contributions in order for the team to eat at a restaurant other than McDonalds. Athletics are the cheapest public relations tool a University can use. See contribution increases during the Spoon years. In my humble opinion Fr Biondi, being a good business man, should be approached in this manner to give the Department a five year committment of full scholarshis and thn evaluate the financial return, both in contributions and applications for admissions. Great study for the business school. End of Rant!
  8. I had acceptable reception 50miles northeast of St.Louis. Just didn't want to make the trek to St.Charles.
  9. I wrote one last year but missed the deadline. Mike has it in the pep band book and we'll see if sells or not next year.
  10. >Some of those foulds weren't his fault. The first two calls >were absolutely ridiculous and basically the refs made the >decision to foul him out of the half. The third foul was >totally his fault as he came over Frye's back trying to get >an offensive rebound that he had very little shot of >getting. His free-throws were ugly. I almost long for Kenny >Brown at the line after seeing those. Interesting note: I sat with a very well respected high school ref from the east side. 10 minutes in to the game he said" their not going to let you win" referring to the officials. He said he could tell by the targeted calls and what he called "flow calls" meaning breaking a teams flow when on a run.
