Recruit (1/7)

  1. Harv Schmidt that coached Illinois from '67 to '74.
  2. Illini fan here. Scout.Com is full of trolls, the entire network seem to be infested with that problem, so please be very leary of the free site on InsideIllini. One long thread had a comment by someone who claimed to have spoken with Alexander. I highly doubt its authenticity. My guess is that some of the trolls are not either SLU or Illini fans, just idiots attempting to stir the pot. The Illinios Rivals site seems to have the best info for both sports, but it's a pay site, so that will not help anyone looking for info unless they pay $10.00. It does sound like one of us will be happy sometime this week, but nothing is for sure. I don't think anyone knows what the outcome will be jut yet.
  3. Roy, How many non-conference games does SLU play? 12? 13? 14? I know 14 is the absolute max for non-confernece and 40 is the absolute max a team can play in a season (40 doubtful to ever happen, 39 rarely). Considering that teams have to allow for four conference tournament games, that leaves... A possible 6 NCAA tournament games which must be alloted. A possible 4 conference tournament games which must be alloted. 16 conference games. 14 max non-conference games. Just being technical, but 30-8 and a Sweet 16 is not possible. Sounds like he has you guys in the Final Four or NC game. So, smile.
  4. >I asked a friend who watched Horace Dixon play some pickup >games at SLU, what is the difference between Justin Johnson >and Dixon? > >My friend said they are similar players, except J.J. can >shoot and Dixon can't. > >I think it's great to add depth inside with another 6-foot-8 >guy, but I don't have high hopes for next season for a prep >school kid who commits to a college this late in the >process. I know he's been linked to some big-name schools >(just like Obi Ikeakor was at one point) but there has to be >a reason that he wasn't getting much recruiting attention >until recently — especially if he really is a super athletic >6-8 forward. > >Now, players like Ikeakor and Dixon can pay off a couple >years down the road, but I wouldn't count on them coming in >and making significant contributions as freshmen. > >- Nate Nate, You also spoke poorly of Jamar Smith who was the best shooting freshman in the nation this past year at 49%. I have no idea if Horace Dixon will be the answer to SLU's power forward need, but after listening to you rip on my Illini, I have hope for the SLU faithful with regards to Dixon.
  5. Is it possibly that Dustin McGuire played in the Illinois Basketball Coaches All-Star game, two game featuring a North - South game for both AA and A? This game was played tonight @Illinois Wesleyan at the Shirt Center in.....Bloomington? Illinois recruit Brian Carlwell was scheduled to play at the DJ game and he instead opted for the IBCA game. I'll check the Peoria, Springfield and Bloomington papers tomorrow and look for a report.
  6. >Sign me up for slightly less than special if it means a >final four or two in a long coaching career...... I think you misinterpreted what I said. :hmmmm
  7. While so many people point to the Sweet 16 run (it was a very good accomplishment), closely looking at their record reveals a number of bad home losses to weaker teams, heck in conference Anderson and UAB were 3-4 versus Tulane. Now I think most SLU fans would consider Tulane to be one of the weaker team in CUSA the past 4 years. There are home losses to Western Kentucky, East Carolina, Western Michigan, and Marshall. Road losses this year to DePaul, Minnesota and UTEP and last year to Richmond, Southern Cal and Texas Christian. He didn't fare very well against Louisville (0-4), Memphis (2-5) or CIncy (1-2). Those are probably the teams most considered to be the powers in the old CUSA. Heck he was 3-4 versus Tulane. His nonconference strength of schedule in the last for years was: 150, 115, 7 and 233. Not very strong. His overall SOS was: 115, 92, 35 and 103. So, in retrospect, he only played a strong schedule one year. So, I think the 89-41 is skewed significantly. If he recruits like he and his boss Nolan Richardson did, by getting a McDonalds All-American every year and adding top 5th year prep players along with a smattering of local kids, he'll probably have very good success. If not, I don't see him doing anything special (special meaning reaching the final four and maybe more than once during a long career).
  8. Corliss Williamson '92 Darnell Robinson '93 Kareem Reid '94 Derek Hood '95 I didn't look after 2000. 03-04 Arkansas won the national championship with Williamson, Robinson, Scotty Thurman and a bunch of juco's (really good ones). Back then, almost all non qualifters went the juco route instead of 5th year prep schools. Getting a top juco back then meant a lot more than it does today. I'm lukewarm on Anderson. I see the good things he has done, yet after reviewing the UAB schedule and results from the last 5 years, I see a lot of home losses to weaker teams. Protecting the home court is a must and he hasn't done it so far. His record against the top C-USA teams wasn't stellar (below .500), that does depend up who is chosen to be the top C-USA team in the last 4 years. His NCAA record of 3-3 at UAB, his uptempo style, his tough guy talk seem to have sold most. I see way too many losses to weak teams to sell me.
  9. His handling of Patrick Beverley's recruitment has been a sham. He claims that Patrick has the necessary scores to gain entrance into D1 next year but refuses to release Patrick's transcripts. He also will not allow Patrick to take offical visits, I guess he doesn't want Patrick to talk with schools without his supervision. He has taken total control in this decision which invariably should belongs to the kid. Many wonder if Bryant is looking out for his own interest. Bryant is as bad as Anthony Longstreet, the coach at Collins.
  10. Not bad considering the 1st team was absolutely loaded.
  11. Nice try :edit:. No dice. Congrats to Lisch and Liddel for great frosh years from an Illini. Deano
  12. from this Illini fan. I watched the last 16 minutes of that game and was very impressed. I know how good Xavier can be, seeing that Illinois struggled with them earlier this year at the United Center. Congrats again and keep it up.
  13. I agree, he is a reach. Evidenly Weber really likes his abilities, assuming this story is correct. He will redshirt if he goes to Illinois, no doubt. We'll have plenty of centers with 6'9' Shaun Pruitt a senior, 6'11" top 40 recruit Brian Carlwell a sophomore, 6'8" redshirt sophomore PF/C Charles Jackson, 6'9" sophomore PF Richard Semrau and 6'8" senior PF Brian Randle ahead of him. He'll have time to add weight and work on his game. Who knows, maybe Weber will talk him into going the 5th year prep route? From all indications, the kid bleeds O & B, so him might do that too, if a scholarship is promised.
  14. Looks like he'll eventually be an Illini. My guess is he'll redshirt is freshman year in '07-'08 due to the depth in Illinois' frontcourt. [http://www.pjstar.com/stories/122705/JOH_B8GK7TG1.080.shtml]
  15. The day after Quin makes those comments, a verbaled recruit, Armon Bassett of Terre Haute, Indiana, decommits from Missouri and announces he will attend Indiana University. And the beat goes on.......
