Billiken Rich
Oh, there will be many of us getting hammered... You meant the basketball team, didn't you? Yeah, we the fans will probably have to get hammered more than usual.
thetorch
Glaze, Manning, McBroom and Crews in that order. Everybody else will be perfect. The good news is that you will always be able to count on Gus Phelps to rise above and be the top target. Dark horse candidates Ash - He's gotten rave reviews but I'm not sure if he's the player we think he is. Stout defensively, big time athlete, not sure if he is a scorer. If he doesn't get double digits he may be the team goat. Victim if too high expectations. Malik Yarbrough or Davell Roby - The two most physically mature freshman and the two who can play a position we don't really have filled by our upperclassmen, the 3. If one of these two is thrust into major minutes but just simply not good enough yet to make an impact they could also get the goat treatment. Historical team Goats 13-14 Barnett 12-13 Remuken & Barnett 11-12 Cassity & Remuken 10-11 Ellis, Cassity, Salecich 09-10 Salecich, Cassity 08-09 Liddell, Eberhart, Thompson 07-08 Polk, Liddell, Eberhart countless others Knollmeyer, Relphorde, Mitchell, even Maguire and he redshirted. 06-07 Justin Johnson, Polk 05-06 Johnson, Newborne 04-05 Clarke, Newborne 03-04 Clarke, Varner 02-03 Diener, Varner 01-02 Diener, Pulley 00-01 Baniak 99-00 Baniak, Robertson 98-99 Baniak, Ssssssssssimons 97-98 Sssssssssssimons 96-97 Cobbin, Barentine 95-96 Barentine 94-95 Carl Turner 93-94 Pederson, Eric Jones 92-93 Pederson, Bickel, Marcus and Eric Jones 91-92 Skinner, Robinson 90-91 Tadysak, Footes 89-90 Anthony Jones, Footes 88-89 Tadysak, Manuel 87-88 Douglass 86-87 Tony Brown About as far back as I can go. crymdg2
I was young, but I don't think Sekeue was even worthy of being hammered on. He just sucked at basketball.

I remember how several posters on this very board whined constantly about Ryan Luechtefeld . He is the prototype for a player for certain limited knowledge fans to whine about. Generally solid, hits a few shots but never does much flashy, makes a few mistakes (nothing unusual but given the representation fallacies of whiners all of the mistakes are over-emphasized). I remember this because it was at this time I realized how pointless it was to complain about the 5th best starter and how consistent that whining has been over time. A team has to have 5 players on the court and generally one of them plays a lot but is not as good as the rest--whining about it or blaming that player is never going to change that. Ssssssimmons was a goat because he was a total waste of a scholarship, he played just enough to warrant it. That 97-98 was pretty good, and young for the most part. Not many candidates to choose from. Baniak was at his freshman peak. Most of the vets were solid role players who got out of Larry's way. Can't blame them. Leuchtefeld and to a certain extent Ryan Braun were unjustly picked on. I never thought they were the top goats on their squads, I think big men who can shoot are given a wide berth. thetorch
Good list. I don't recall Ellis ever being a goat. I thought Remekun was an undervalued role player, but some expected more. Glaze has been a goat to some the previous two seasons. Ellis in his sophomore year was nothing other than atrocious. Picked as an All A10 candidate and expected to fill some of the void from the loss of Mitchell and Reed, or at the very least progress as a player he fell flat on his face. All in one season he gets hurt playing with fireworks, forgets how to play defense, is benched and publicly called out by Majerus, then suffers a season ending injury. By that time I was thankful he was hurt. To his credit he stuck around, most guys would have gone back to Perth, and became a valuable member of the team and an eventual Majerus favorite. Still even 05 couldn't say that was even an OK season for Ellis. Not counting our off the court problems Ellis is the goat of that season. Remuken maintained a certain level of goat status from halfway through his sophomore year to halfway through his sr year. He was probably only the top goat for some of his jr season. You may very well be right that Simmons was more of a goat amongst the local fans but on this board I remember very clearly the uninformed and constant criticism of Ryan Leuchtefeld. Simmons was a non-factor on this board precisely because he did not play enough (and if I remember correctly would occasionally hit a few nice shots). I did see Saint Louis play that season on the road and on TV but would not know what the fans closer to the team thought (or scapegoated). Billiken Rich
I hated Seuchtefeld I didn't hate him but either because of the memories of Jeff or because he was white, the love for him amongst some made me physically ill on no less than three occassions. The patented "Leuchtefeld swipe" one handed rebound attempt became legend. Today he'd not be a SLU recruit. Then he was, prehaps the best we could get. He wasn't a great basketball player. Billiken Rich
Wasn't he originally a walk-on? He ended up playing a lot if he was. In any case you can blame our recruiting at that time rather than him. I don't think he wasn't trying. He just wasn't a great player. But he was defended way too much by some...... Billiken Rich
Didn't everyone hate Chris Braun? He was my neighbor after he moved to Waterloo and I just remember him not being very popular among the fans. Braun will forever be in high esteem with me after just shaking is head at a couple of antler a-holes that kept calling him gay during the shoot around at the last game we played at Spumac...... Again though, I think low expectations saved him from being hated.
