Guess it's time to start debating whether you redshirt him. 4 months is what middle of January? Could be longer than that before he's up to speed. Who knows where the season will be at that point?

Well, this sucks. Losing much-needed depth.

I'd redshirt him. No need to rush an already-skinny freshman big on a team that isn't going to challenge for the postseason, anyway. Nor is it worth risking exacerbating a sensitive injury.

In the meantime, I hope they put him on the Obi diet and have him doing whatever he can in the weight room that isn't going to strain his foot.

I feel bad for the kid; he's already been incredibly patient in accepting a scholarship conditional upon going to a year of prep school first. Now he has to sit longer. Here's hoping for a full recovery.

I wouldn't redshirt him. Best case scenario he puts in 3 more years after this, becomes good, and bolts as a 5th year immediately eligible guy. Worst case you have a stiff for a 5th year and compound a recruiting mistake.

Not sure I'd call that "best case." Best case is he develops and either 1) he stays loyal to SLU similar to how he stayed loyal to SLU for a year between when he committed and when he actually signed or 2) the NCAA closes that loophole and that option doesn't even exist.

From what I recall, this season is the last with the 5th year automatically eligible rule. EW wouldn't be able to take advantage of it as he would have to sit out.

Can you elaborate on this new rule? Will the NCAA have to approve the 5th year? Right now, each kid has 5 years to complete his 4 years of playing beginning with his beginning of the academic school year, right? So the rule now ending would normally allow Welmer, Neufeld and Bishop to play any 4 of their 5 years beginning August 2015 without NCAA approval? So will the NCAA be required, in essence, to approve all redshirts? Is the new rule to prevent redshirting of otherwise healthy players?

The rule that people are referencing is the one that allows people to transfer, without sitting out, if they have already graduated from their current school, have an extra year of eligibility and their current school doesn't offer a degree in the academic study of interest.

It sounds good in theory but it ends up getting abused where players on mid-major caliber programs are recruited away from their senior year by bigger programs. Johnbj14 was suggesting that the loophole for this rule is being closed. I hadn't heard that but I hope he is right.
