It isn't 1990 anymore and Jim Crews got fired from Army for the way he treated a player. Repeat, he got fired from Army for how he treated a player. Let that sink in for a second.

This was a concern for me back when we were making him the permanent head coach, but from what I understand, it wasn't a Bobby Knight or Mike Rice situation. Sounded like it had more to do with Army protocol, being that Crews was a civilian and the players had a rank as West Point students, that turned a minor or non-issue into something that warranted dismissal. I think if it was an actual player mistreatment issue, this would have been frequently brought up early in his tenure at SLU.

I think some people need to be reminded that Crews coaching attitude is a relic of an era long gone. Hell, it was on its way out 25 years ago.

I think you're greatly over exaggerating. Coaches do display much more restraint during games but I don't think practice behavior has changed a ton.

Do you really believe coach K or calipari don't jump on their players the same way crews (and every other slu coach I've ever witnessed) does?

I am fairly certain that the guy who just won his 5th NCAA title, played and coached at Army, and has the top recruiting class lined up uses the exact same approach.

Everyone needs to lay off Crews. He inherited a great team on an interim basis--and did great things with the team--but on a permanent basis he was handed a complete rebuilding job. He is recruiting and implementing a team that is modeled after his approach: tall guards and big guys who can step outside and shoot. He should get this year and next to implement his system with his recruits. If we aren't at least a bubble NCAA team next season, then his job should be on the line. For now, everyone should enjoy watching the young kids develop and improve.

If he is going to ride players like he reportedly did yesterday at an open practice, I can just imagine what it like behind closed doors.

No, I don't think K and Cal ride their players like that today. One thing I have always heard about Coach K is how professionally he treats his players. Most kids today just tune out that berating crap after the first couple of times.

Someone mentioned earlier that these guys are adults and used that as a justification for it. Do any of you treat other adults at work like that? Do you berate an intern at work like that?

Rickma was able to get away with some of that BS because he was a basketball genius and had the resume to prove it.

I wasn't there yesterday, but it didn't sound like what Crews said or did was out of line or inappropriate in any way. The descriptions I read sounded right in line with what I would expect from Coach K.

Coach Cal is very hard on his players during games I doubt he's a ***** cat at practice. I don't know how Crews was yesterday but he certainly didn't beat on anybody today.

Sign Guy what kind of software doesn't allow you to say young cat?

Actually, I've heard from reliable sources that Coach K is amazingly profane and biting at his practices. I've watched a lot of coaches from youth sports up to professional and I've always thought that every single one of them makes an ass of himself to a certain extent. I don't know that there is really that much of a new age coach; maybe that's just what they put out for public consumption. I am also old enough to appreciate someone who doesn't suffer fools easily. I don't know if Jim Crews is going to be successful or have a spectacular flame-out, but I'm certainly rooting for him. I think it's also telling that none of last year's freshmen bailed on the program, including the ones who would have had been hotter commodities.

I know people that have sat behind Duke's bench during games and say he is amazingly profane during games.

My dad did business with the parents of Jon Scheyer (now assistant at Duke) and he said that coach K said he would cut his dick off if he took another bad shot. How's that for political correctness?

.

The same Army AD that extended Crews contract two months before he fired him?

Look if you know the story give it to us. If you don't know stop the innuendo. People get fired. I don't think Crews is a bad guy, in fact I think he is a good guy. Is he a good coach for us? The next 2 years will tell .

For those of you that never served in the Army or other services: The popular notion of how things are done inside the Army (and other services) is not true. The Army is a place where you get reamed repeatedly for whatever it is that displeases some superior or the other. Remember the Navy saying; "BOHICA" (Bend Over Here It Comes Again). Anyone having to live and advance within such a system has to develop a very thick hide, enough said. If Crews was rough with some kid in the team, boo hoo to the pussyfooted sensitive player, what kind of a soldier is he going to be anyway? When you are in the Army, you are not following the rules of upper class etiquette or political correctness. You are not a gentleman in the Army, you are a soldier, you are different than civilians are, you think differently too. You are in an organization that trains constantly and is in the business of killing people. If you have not served your really have no clue.

Thank you for pointing this out. I make it a point to watch the players and their reactions when the coaches are talking. Milik does get

an attitude and so does Myles. The coaches are simply letting them know they are not going to take it. Brian is more suited to the crowd that posts on STL dispatch forum.

Wow. What you just described is not what I saw today. I saw a totally engaged teacher getting his points across. Sure he pointed out mistakes but that's his job. I thought he ran a good and productive practice. One of my points for this year is I thought Crews needed to cut his rotation. Good luck with that. It looked to me like everyone could play including the walk on.

You must not have been there the first day. I like tough coaches, but just not sure certain tones are productive. The first practice may have been an anomaly, so the next two may not have been that way. I was actually a little surprised at that practice. Correcting a kid is great, but taking a shot that they are no Allen Iverson or Dwayne Wade is another. The tone seemed one of frustration at times, which surprised me so early on. I do think the practice was well run though.

I agree with Willie's post also. These kids don't need to be stroked. I personally thought he needed to get a lot tougher this year than in

the past. Crawford is such a well rounded player. You can stop his shot and he will go around you in a blink and then kick a great pass

or finesse to the bucket. Neufeld and Welmer are good for Freshman and both will contribute this season. Both are tough kids.

Neufeld likes to go to the left but can go either well with skill. He also can get in the air when he has to. Elliot has a nice stroke and

is much quicker than I expected he would be. Bishop is very quick and has a nice shot. I may give more of an update late but bottom line

is we are going to be much better this year. The team seems to be buying in more this year, at least what I say today.

Coach Crews is fine and I was impressed with the fairly up tempo practice that move smoothly from one phase to the next.

I don't think the basketball court has room for politically correct candy axx BS. These kids will learn much more from Coach Crews than

playing basketball. He pretty much chewed on everyone when they needed it.

I keep searching the thread and for the life of me can't find anybody that said these kids need to be stroked or anybody that was calling for political correctness. I might just be overlooking something though.
