Stronger and quicker but ideally he's not your best scorer. -Roby is vocal and gets on guys for screwing up. Most well rounded player on the team. Definitely improved. -Yacoubou is more under control and is a pure athlete but I think he's more of an athlete than a basketball player -Yarbrough is a little more under control but he just doesn't get it. Crews had him running a lot. I think he needs to play the 4 just to limit him from screwing up too much. Most talented player -Gillmann seems like the same player as last year -Jolly just doesn't listen. Doesn't seem any better -Reynolds was yelled at so much that it was almost uncomfortable. I just don't see a bright future. -Neufeld is a player. Really good finisher and doesn't shy away from contact (although our post players are weak). Long way to go with playing within our system. -Welmer could be solid eventually. Doesn't play scared but needs strength and experience. Solid shooter -Bishop was eh. samslu Posted August 1, 2015 Share Posted August 1, 2015 Crews did a lot of coaching this morning. They are putting in a new offense. It involves a lot of picks away from the ball and different options depending on what the defense does. Most of the kids are struggling to pick it up and everyone took a turn getting chewed on. Milik and Miles the most. Crews was really emphasizing the 3 man game. Wellmer is going to be a player when he gets stronger. He has a real nice shot and is fundamentally solid. He moves well for someone his size. Neufeld looks for contact and has good post moves. He is as good as advertised. Bishop has nice shot and handles the ball well. As most freshman do he struggles stopping dribble penetration. Gillmann looks bigger. Had a nice dunk and a real nice jump hook. He is still limited by his foot speed and lack of jumping ability. Ash, Crawford, and Davell all played well. Davell looks to be the starting pg. Miles made a lot of mistakes but his shot looks much better. At one point Crews told him to tell us what his GPA is. He said they all have high GPAs but were getting Fs for basketball today. They might want to be careful with Milik. They are very hard on him. Apparently, the rule is that if you commit a turnover, you handle the ball and run off to the side before rejoining the drill. If they miss free throws during a game, they must hit some number for each miss in the next practice. I'm sure there are other "team rules." I am okay with the old school coaches who are stern and demand great things and if they aren't getting it they make kids run or yell and get loud. However, the little snide, sarcastic, and condescending remarks are unnecessary and not sure they motivate anyway. That being said, I would only want physically and mentally tough kids on my team and these guys are actually young men and they need to be able to handle anything that comes their way and just push through. Reply---I have attended many practices run by Coach Crews and I have never seen him snide or sarcastic. He does get frustrated with mistakes and he corrects them just as any coach in America He communicates well with his players and works hard to get them to do things the right way. Irishdude Posted August 1, 2015 Share Posted August 1, 2015 I agree with Willie's post also. These kids don't need to be stroked. I personally thought he needed to get a lot tougher this year than in the past. Crawford is such a well rounded player. You can stop his shot and he will go around you in a blink and then kick a great pass or finesse to the bucket. Neufeld and Welmer are good for Freshman and both will contribute this season. Both are tough kids. Neufeld likes to go to the left but can go either well with skill. He also can get in the air when he has to. Elliot has a nice stroke and is much quicker than I expected he would be. Bishop is very quick and has a nice shot. I may give more of an update late but bottom line is we are going to be much better this year. The team seems to be buying in more this year, at least what I say today. Coach Crews is fine and I was impressed with the fairly up tempo practice that move smoothly from one phase to the next. I don't think the basketball court has room for politically correct candy axx BS. These kids will learn much more from Coach Crews than playing basketball. samslu Posted August 1, 2015 Share Posted August 1, 2015 A couple of additional observations. It looks like they will trap out of the man to man defense when there are opportunities. With their length this should be fun to watch. Wellmer and Neufeld were each playing with a post in the five on five drills. Not sure if this was because of who was available or they are planning on a big line up. I think they both have the foot speed to guard most fours. I also thought Crews ran a very good practice. The thing that we may not find out until January is whether it will be hard to cut down the rotation because everyone can play or if because outside of the top 3 or 4, no one stands out.
