Recruiting - 2017

Kpedi could be a good recruit for us. I think IUPUI is still his only offer. He's got a lot of interest but it seems like the big programs are still taking a wait-and-see approach with him. He's young for his class, raw, and growing. Might be smart to offer now and stay involved.

The staff is quite involved with Kpedi. From what I hear, he wants to play in the Big 10. If he doesn't blossom as expected, we're nicely positioned as a fallback option.

I'd like to get to a point where our program is not a "fallback option" just because a Big 10 school makes an offer. Again I point to Xavier... they have been able to consistently get their share of players that have good BCS offers (I'm not talking McDonald's AA type players). And they were doing it when they were in the A-10. I was hoping with our recent success, we'd start being on in some kids ranked in that 75-150 range. Doesn't look like we're moving in that direction.

If that were going to happen, this year needs to be a really good year. Comparing to Xavier - they last had a losing season in 95-96. And they went 13-15, 8-8 in conference. Before that they didn't have a losing season until 81-82. Their rebuilding years feature NIT appearances. SLU's rebuilding year didn't even get them tickets to see an NIT game.

Gonzaga's last losing year was 89-90. Before that was 82-83.

SLU has had success in 3 years prior to this past year. SLU is a lot closer to St Joe's than Xavier at this point.

We're not at Xavier's current level. Making 3 straight tournaments doesn't put as at that level. Xavier was putting together similar runs 25 years ago. With frontcourt players who didn't have BCS offers.

Xavier managed to snag some underrecruited 6'7/6'8 players back in the day. Much harder to do in the era of free information and recruits with delusions of grandeur but that's what we have to do.

Obviously we're not there yet. That's why I said "I'd like to get to a point where our program..." With the Fetz in place and a little run of success, I was hopeful we'd at least be moving closer toward that. Doesn't look like we are. It won't be easy, but there is no reason SLU can't sustain a run of success the way a school like Xavier has.

-unfortunately there seems to be a lot of reasons

I've seen quite a few things on Jared Ridder. Jared has upcoming visits to Creighton, Missouri, Northern Iowa, Tulsa and possibly Vanderbilt starting this weekend at Creighton. He currently holds five offers from Missouri State, IUPUI, Slu, Air Force and Stetson. More colleges are calling as it has been reported he has heard from over 30 schools this summer. He is now a little over 6'7 and can stroke it from well beyond the arc either off the dribble or spot up. He is deceivingly athletic as he has dunked on many people this summer after hitting a three the previous possession. He rebounds well and is a good ball handler for his size. As a native of Missouri and watching this kid play through the circuit all summer it is safe to say that whoever ends up with this kid will be getting a solid player. As a sophomore last year I was able to watch him play at Meramec and in the third quarter alone he hit five threes and ended up with around 30 points for the game. On defense he is long and lanky and is able to alter shots as well as deflect a lot of passes that turn into layups on the other end. I hope as a basketball fan in the state of Missouri that Slu can keep this 6'7 wing in state.

Pestello was president of Le Moyne when they upset Syracuse in an exhibition game and brought more attention to the school then ever before.

Certainly someone with that perspective knows the value of investing in athletics.

SLU dropped by Stevenson High to check out 6'0 PG Willie Herenton this week. He's a defensive-minded player who can also shoot it.

The coaching staff will be making a number of visits to the north suburbs of Chicago this season. Herenton, 2016 PF Lorenzo Edwards and 2018 SG Drew Peterson all play in the same conference.

Flew under the radar for a while but finished the AAU season strong (his team is Meanstreets). His older brother is a senior with Ivy League offers and interest. They both just transferred to Stevenson from Whitney Young.

Pestello has a lot of things to deal with only one of which is athletics, specifically basketball. Other, more important issues are the budget, where to spend the funds available (yes, SLU does not have unlimited funds available) and where to cut. I think it will take some time before the "new SLU" starts profiling itself under Pestello. University presidents are under unceasing pressure from many different directions. Pestello is finding his way through these pressure flows, he needs time to do it.

The staff checked out 6'8 PF Manny Patterson at Chicago Kenwood last week. They've been hitting Chicago and Indianapolis pretty hard on the recruiting trail.

Locally, Vashon looks poised to be a major player in high school hoops again. Floyd's son Tony is the new coach and his two stars at Madison Prep, PF Levi Stockard and PG Daniel Farris, followed him to Vashon. SLU is currently evaluating 6'8 260 lb Stockard.

Tony is not his father. I expect Stockard to qualify.

Altonio's criminal record says he is worse than his father.

You can't recruit kids from an Iron's coached team.
