Listener of the Streets (6/7)

  1. I don’t think any of us or ISU’s MBMs truly have any idea of what can and cannot legally be signed in this case. As I mentioned in an earlier post, binding pre-contracts are signed all the time in professional soccer. I don’t see why he couldn’t sign something that automatically triggers his buyout upon the completion of their NIT run, and puts into effect a contract with us. It just feels like a done deal to me, and I’m usually more on the pessimistic side of things as they pertain to Billiken Basketball.
  2. I think that’s exactly why he’s still tweeting, if he were radio silent, it might be pretty telling that he’s gone. He wants to win the NIT, and keeping the fans engaged has helped with that up to this point. Their atmospheres have been great, and I’m sure he wants a ton of fans at Hinkle. It’s in his best interest to keep them thinking they have a shot. Again, I have no inside info, but the multiple reports of Louisville needing to pay us a buyout to sign Schertz has me thinking he has already signed something more binding than an MOU.
  3. They’re in denial over there. It’s entertaining, but you can’t take it seriously. They’ve gone through every stage of grief except acceptance, and they keep regressing to denial. Their rationale is that Schertz won’t confirm signing anything… why the hell would he admit to signing a contract with us while they’re trying to win the NIT?
  4. 100% in the same boat. There are two things that have me feeling great about it now: 1) We have not been linked to any other coaches (except Frank begging for Ahearn). It seems like May and Dr. C know we have our guy in the bag. You have to think we’d at least hear of some secondary interest if it wasn’t locked down. We have seen Louisville connected with other coaches the second Schertz turned them down. 2) It was reported by multiple sources that Louisville would've had to pay us a buyout to sign Schertz. I’m not a lawyer, but how would they have to pay us a buyout if we didn’t have something signed and sealed, just waiting to be delivered? I think it’s entirely possible he has signed some sort of pre-contract, where the buyout is paid to ISU and the contract with us goes into effect the second ISU is eliminated from the NIT. Pre-contracts are extremely common in European Soccer, not sure how it would work here, but it seems like we have something more binding and enforceable than just a regular MoU.
  5. A lot of celebration will be necessary. And repeat with each transfer that comes with.
  6. Gtfo, he’s not staying at ISU. If it wasn’t a lock he’s coming here, he’d have for sure gone to Louisville. Over 20+ years of fandom, I’ve come to expect that what can go wrong with SLU hoops will go wrong, and even I think it’s a done deal.
  7. If you’d have told me when he was hired that Travis Ford would coach at SLU for eight seasons and NEVER beat a ranked team, I’d have assumed we got relegated to D2. Wonder if any other A10 programs went winless against ranked opponents in that time frame.
  8. Best high school recruit in Canada, or everywhere? His offer list according to 247 is definitely pretty impressive. Surprised his rankings aren’t higher, although I know those can be a crapshoot for international guys.
  9. I know you’re an Android guy, but still… copy image URL> other media> insert image from URL
  10. If Schertz moves on after one year, it was a great year for SLU basketball. (FWIW I don’t think he leaves after one year) Anyway, I doubt Utah St. regrets hiring Sprinkle because he left after one year. They were decimated after Odom left, and he got them to R32 year one. I see your point, and there’s some validity to it, but you hire the best coach for your program NOW, imo. You can’t worry about three years from now, especially in the era of college free agency for all.
  11. Plus has there been any example of a coach taking his ENTIRE starting lineup to his next job? I could see him bringing 2, maybe 3 starters. I’d be (pleasantly) shocked if he brings 5+ guys. So the “this is our team, root for them” logic doesn’t really work for me. Or at least doesn’t outweigh the benefits of getting Schertz announced officially, start recruiting, etc.
  12. Against for me. ISU fans were really relishing our brief panic over Schertz, until they realized we’d get a way bigger buyout than they will. And there are still some that won’t accept that this MOA means he will be our coach next year. Get it done. Get Schertz announced and working the transfer portal.
  13. From the article linked: “Indiana State coach Josh Schertz is no longer an option, sources said, and has been linked to the Saint Louis opening.”
