  1. how do i get to the a 10 talk forum? thank you in advance
  2. a fall away 10 footer by john duff at the buzzer got the x-men in cincy.
  3. thanks for the correction. another example. xavier lost a big 12 team on the schedule and they are able to replace it with another big 12 team.
  4. in talking briefly with earl austin at the game monday night, he said one of the positive aspects of being in the atlantic 10 was that we can still play a similar schedule and get home and home against teams from major conferences. it's just tough for those good mid-major programs to get those games on a consistent basis (other than those early-season tournaments). I think roy mentioned this earlier. earl said all you have to do is look at the non-conference schedules of the two leagues. that's what i did. here's what i found. St. Joseph dec. 9 - boston college dec 20 California feb. 2- at villanova Temple Nov. 21 villanova nov.29 Illinois dec 9 arizona state dec. 15 south carolina jan 3 at indiana feb. 14 georgetown rhode island nov. 30 at syracuse dec. 23 charlotte dec. 8 providence xavier nov. 29 indiana dec. 13 mississippi state dec. 23 at texas jan. 13 at alabama feb. 3 cincinnati St. bonaventure dec. 3 syracuse Richmond dec. 3 at uab dec. 6 wake forest Umass Dec. 30 at unconn jan 3 Tennessee Dayton dec. 23 Cincinnati by contrast missouri valley Smsu dec. 20 saint louis creighton Nov. 29 st. bonaventure Dec. 10 Nebraska dec. 13 fresno state dec. 22 wyoming bradley dec. 7 at depaul dec. 29 at unlv southern illinois jan. 2 charlotte northern iowa iowa *i won't bore you with everything, but i think you get the point. and notice how many home games that a 10 schools have against those programs from the elite leagues. that means a higher RPI and a better chance at the big dance. just look at creighton, which was a top 10 league last year at one time. the best they can do for nonconference game are the likes of nebraska, wyoming and fresno state. not bad teams, but it's not getting arizona, ucla, illinois, missouri in your house. sms should have a hell of good team this year, but the biggest name on their nonconference schedule this year is us. most of their top nonconference games are against other top mid-major schools. that's why they created that bracket buster deal, to hopefully give the mid majors a little bump. it's just tough for mid majors to get big time nonconference games because the big boys won't play them a home and home on a regular basis. we would have had the same problem in the mvc. we won't in the a 10. we can still have home and home with the big boys if we so choose for the future.
  5. it's nice to see that the prison systems have computers for their residents to keep up with billiken basketball.
  6. I've seen Leonard play several times. He played on the same eagles 15 team with one of my hazelwood central hawks, alex tyus. he's about 6'5", (maybe taller) and pretty skilled. he's a little thin, but he's athletic and he can play. that would be great if soderberg is looking at him. jarod and alex would would make for a nice recruiting class for 2006-7. another kid on that team is ben hansbrough from poplar bluff, tyler's younger brother. ben is about 6'4" and he can play. kyle kirk was also on that team, but he moved to springfield. I heard a rumor that he was still going to play for the eagles during the summer. there are some pretty good players in that sophomore class.
  7. earl austin jr. constantly said that slu should go to the a-10 if the invitation was extended. i heard him say it on kmox and kfns. he said how much he liked and enjoyed the valley as a conference, but he was in favor the a-10 all the way.
  8. I wasn't on this board four years ago, but let me lay a little knowledge on you. Gilbert was a BIG Time Player in high school. Darius or no Darius. Had the schools not merged and Darius stayed at Lincoln, Gilbert would have been a bigger star at East side. I screamed at the time and even called the basketball office in disgust that we were not recruiting this kid. The bottom line was that he was an athletic kid who could SHOOT, yet he could still score as well. He wasn't one-dimensional. In my estimation, we have missed out on two NCAA tournament bids because of this gaffe. You can't make mistakes like this if you are trying to compete in C-USA on a yearly basis. Maurice scott was all over slu as well and he had every right to be. in the martin luther king shootout against Vashon, Gilbert hit "The V" for almost 30 points. Don't know the exact total, but it was in the high 20's. Vashon won the game, but nobody could stop Gilbert, not Shelton, not McKinney, Not anybody. He also lit up CBC in the Gateway Classic Shootout at the SAvvis. Gilbert was also on fire in the Supersectionals against Mt. Vernon. Guess who was the leading scorer in the 2000 IHSA Elite Eight state tournament. It was Phillip Gilbert. He was a lights out shooting guard with good size and athletic ability. That's prime time competition. Not Class A ball. Plus, Phillip was an excellent student coming out of high school. Zo knew how good he was because he was at the Vashon game, the CBC game and he went to the Illinois state tournament to watch Gilbert. This was long after DArius had signed with St. John's. I loved Jason Edwin, but he was not better than Gilbert. Obviously, I would have loved to have both. I didn't realize that McClain would be a wasted scholarship. But Zo screwed up because here was the top shooting guard in the area in your backyard who wanted to come to Slu and you still took a pass. If Jalensdad was attending games at the time, he knows the deal. I stand by what i said. HUGE MISTAKE. We can't afford to make mistakes like that anymore, or else we need to go to the valley and leave the A-10 alone.
  9. Whatsasaluki, in 1991, a loaded southern illinois team lost to a bottom feeder team in turmoil with a bunch of freshmen that finished 5-23 and fired their coach at the end of the season. that team that beat siu: SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY The following year, which was spoon's first, a starting over year in which the bills won 12 games. One of those wins was a victory over the MVC champion Salukis in overtime. last year, slu came off its most embarrassing loss of the year at butler. Slu was a bad team at the time. what happened in the next game. the missouri valley conference regular season champions came to town and were held to 13 points in the first half. beating SIU at the time should have been a big deal, but it became a little ho-hum when you go on to beat No. 2 Louisville, Cincinnati on the road, Dayton and Memphis. Even in the darkest hours of billiken basketball, we could always count on opening at least one can of whip-A** on the egyptian dogs. as a mid major (as you call slu), the billikens have been able to reach a respectable amount of success in a power conference (top 9 every year). It just goes to show that if the billikens were in the valley the past 10 years, they would no doubt enjoy the same type of success that the salukis and Creigton have enjoyed in that same span. Now, if SIU were in Conference USA and had to play the likes of Cincinnati, Louisville, Charlotte, Marquette, DePaul (TWICE) plus Memphis or UAB from the other side. Oh yeah and add Arizona (No. 1 in nation), Butler, SMSU, SIU (three top mid major schools) on a yearly basis, you might have a problem. BTW, Congrats on getting Matt Shaw, but remember this. Anthony Bonner was headed to Southern Illinois before he changed his mind at the last minute and decided to come to SLU. So, we'll call it even if shaw can score about 2,000 points, lead the nation in rebounding, become a No. 1 draft choice and spend five years in the NBA. rashad tucker committed to slu and changed his mind and went to southern instead out of junior college. I'd say that move cost him two trips to the NCAA Tournament and a possible NBA career. Great job on the home court winning streak. That leads to my next question. How about a few significant road victories, they're haven't been many mind you. I'll give you a few of ours. 1997: SLU beats No. 5 Louisville in Freedom Hall. Cards go to the Final Eight. 2003: SLU wins at Cincinnati. The same Cincy team that blew out Louisville and Oklahoma State at home. Okay, now, you can counter with your thrilling victories and the unidome and roundhouse. my bad. bottom line, we salute the success of the salukis. we've enjoyed the regional rivalry and we've enjoyed our winning record against you guys. I don't think slu fans have to apologize for Getting to the NCAA Tournament 4 times, NIT twice, and winning the C-USA Tournament title in a conference that is superior to yours. Even if we are a mid major.
  10. i've been just sitting back and watching all of these valley fans run their smack. it's a little comical. i even went on valleytalk.net to see what was cooking. by reading all of the post, you would have thought they were from fans of duke, kansas, u. conn and arizona. creigton and siuc can talk a little because they can back it up with success, valley championships and multiple ncaa bigs. siu has had a good run, but as I said, we have a winning record against them and have won just as many ncaa tournament teams. Not to mention, our schedule is twice as rough as their's. I was really laughing when i saw fans from smsu, illinois state and Bichita state jumping on slu. for all the smack smsu fans talk, they have been to the NCAA Tournament only ONE time since we took Spoonhour away from them. They haven't won the Valley regular season or tournament since Spoon left them. Since joining the valley in 91, they have won the tournamnet only once and been to the NCAA tournament twice. not quite the same success since they left the mid-continent. they've had Slu's number a little bit in the head to head games, but other than that sweet 16 team in '99, not much has been going on in springfield. as for Bichita State, they have done anything since Antoine Carr and Cliff Levingston were there more than 20 years ago. They have one two winning seasons in the past 10 years and ONE paltry NIT bid last year. Illinois state had a little roll under stallings, but that ship sailed when stallings left for music city. They didn't even win 10 games last year. evansville won the valley in 98. we beat them by 30 that year in hawaii. *So I invite any Valley fan to come on this board and tell me what has your program accomplished in the past 10 years. Creighton and SIU can get a free pass on this one. Does it match *Four NCAA bids *TWo NIT Bids *One C-USA Tournament title. *Multiple nonconference victories over high profile schools *Crowds of over 21,000 in our good years. *Crowds of 10,000 and 11,000 in our bad years.
  11. not recruiting phillip gilbert was a HUGE mistake. he had already signed sloan, edwin and wasted a scholarship of mcClain in the fall. he had only one left and saved it for baker. gilbert wanted to come, but he could not wait any longer for something that wasn't going to happen. edwin was a nice player as well, but he was not as good as gilbert in high school. 'Zo blew that one in the fall. Terrible move.
  12. Texas Saluki, In the past 10 years St. Louis U. *made four trips to the NCAA Tournament ('94, '95, '98 '00) second round twice. SLU has won the same number of NCAA tournament games as SIU in the same time period. *Won the C-USA Tournament title in '00 *made two NIT appearances ('96, '03) *has a winning record against Southern Illinois *beaten high profile teams such as Kansas, Illinois, Missouri, Memphis, Minnesota, Cincinnati (ranked No. 1 at the time), Louisville (ranked No. 2 at the time). over the years *accomplished those things in a league(s) (Great Midwest/Conference USA) that is considerably tougher than the Missouri Valley Conference. *set many attendance records at one time. So to recap, that six postseason berths (4 NCAA, 2 NIT) and several big nonconference victories and one conference tournament title. don't try to act like we haven't done anything over here. OUtside of SIU and Creighton, i don't think any other valley school can claim that kind of success. and remember, slu is doing that in a top 10 conference and a tough nonconference schedule year in and year out.
