brianstl
After we did not land Tool Martin in the fall, the staff seemed focused on recruiting a 3 in the spring. Not sure if the timing means anything, but UNLV offers Yarbrough... AFTER Yarbrough signs with SLU, UNLV signs McCaw. Perhaps McCaw was UNLV's Plan B to Yarbrough? My sense is that with Platt's relationship with Yarbrough's dad, MY was a top priority for SLU in the spring. Good job by the staff in landing him as the kid seems to have a lot of ability. Martin is really the one guy on the list who would have been an excellent addition. He visited SLU and we were in his top 3. Not sure we missed much with most of the others. With some of these other players, it is difficult to really determine if we were serious about making an offer or simply "interested". Conversely, sometimes it is difficult to determine how much interest some of the kids had in SLU. If they don't take a visit, I tend to think not so much. The kid from Texas who signed with Vandy appears to be a pretty nice player, but I don't think he ever visited SLU. One player not on the tool list is Riley Lachance - we had interest at one point, before he also signed with Vandy. This team needed both Yarbrough and McCaw. We could sure use McCaw's three point shooting. McCaw would have been a great addition.

We only had on scholarship to give at the time of the MY commitment, so we couldn't have had both. I double checked the timeline: MY offered by UNLV on April 15, he signs with SLU on April 16, McCaw signs with UNLV on April 19.

The way Diddy made it sound McCaw was interested before we only had one scholarship left, but SLU wasn't. Don't know if that was the actual case or not. I was under the impression that McCaw wasn't that interested in SLU, but Diddy has always been pretty reliable.

ACE
McCaw was definitely interested in SLU before SLU only had one scholarship left. I have no idea what SLU's interest was I know at one point, Ben indicated McCaw was more interested in going out of town. Who knows how accurate that was or if the situation changed later. With pdiddy, while he provided great inside info back in the day, it seemed like that dried up once Sodie was fired. I also started getting the impression he had become more of a guy with some local hoops connections, rather than an insider to the SLU program. McCaw, Doby, and Barnett repeatedly gave SLU mixed signals. Majerus would have simply quit recruiting them. Crews kept coming back to them after periods of time. McCaw was all over the place, he had a favorable visit with the staff where his scholarship offer was renewed and then McCaw made no contact with the staff for weeks. We signed several players during this time and it was thought McCaw was fishing for bigger offers. Then months later he revisited SLU, once again indicating that he may want to come here. I believe we chose Yarbrough over him, but then again we had no way of knowing whether he was seriously interested or not.

Despite all this, I think the positives are that the staff was actually drawing legitimate interest. If they can continue to draw that from local kids, then we will be in the mix for a lot of those solid 2016 local recruits. That recruiting class is the key to the program's future, it is absolutely stacked.

That recruiting class is the key to the program's future, it is absolutely stacked. Hate to disagree... but I disagree. We have proven that local kids are not required -- end of discussion. Now, is it nice to have local kids? Sure. Will there me more local interest and possibly more butts in the seats? Sure. Might we have a built-in advantage with local kids who can then play in front of their friends and families? Sure. But I am just fine with JC bringing in non-locals kids like MB, DR, MY, MR, BJ, TL, MC and RA. Bringing in non-locals like JM and GG? No thank you. The key to the program's future is to do whatever it takes to get to the NCAA Tourney. If our program wins, there will be a line out the door of recruits wanting to play for us -- and the line will have both locals and non-locals in it. Based on the timeline of events, you could draw the conclusion that McCaw was a plan B option for both SLU and UNLV, while MY was Plan A for both. For as much hand-wringing as there is on this board about the recruits that got away (I am guilty of it as well) sometimes we do win recruiting battles against decent programs. Agree with torch, my impression of McCaw was that he was pretty flakey throughout. I think JC and staff did a nice job of landing a quality 3 in MY. They seem to have done a solid job of identifying a variety of quality, viable recruiting targets. To this point, this is not like the Sodie era where too many times we would miss on a prime target and then be left with no other good options. Obviously Tatum, but beyond him who do you see as must get players? I have seen Tyler Cook a few times this year and I still don't see how he is a top 75 recruit. I have heard good things about Xavier Sneed, but other than that I am not sure there are other local kids in the class of 2016 we should be offering. I don't see the CBC guards as being above mid-major players. I like the idea of keeping the local kids home, but I am not so sure the talent is there consistently in St. Louis to build a program around local talent and be real successful. It seems like it has been mostly mid-major and below talent with a few elite prospects mixed in.
doowop
In Chaminade's latest game, which they lost to a very good team, Cook did not play well. I watched him earlier this year and I was not impressed. However, he has the rest of this season and all of next to improve.
Cowboy
-sort of related.... are there 13 kids from the area playing college ball that could fill our roster if we did not let anyone get away? -are those players better than who we have? -I don't know the answer but would like to see the list -the only ones popping to mind that could fill the roster are Gillman, Hill at Illinois and Rosburg at Mizzou and I am sure I am missing others, are there 10 more? I hope there is not an obvious player I am missing

Rosie Jones certainly would have been a nice addition. Did we offer him? There don't appear to be many good players who we should have offered a scholarship to, but didn't. Christian Thomas has had a nice career - good addition by Moser. I recall some talk as a possible walk on for SLU before he signed with Loyola. brianstl
There are a lot of guys on that list who could help SLU. Cory Allen Jr (who is having a huge year at SFU), Roosevelt Jones, Malcolm Hill, Javier Duren, Rayshawn Simmons, Christian Thomas, Dantiel Daniels, Trae Anderson, Dylan Chatman, Cornell Johnston and Jordon Granger are all starting for teams better than SLU is this season. McCaw is getting starter minutes at UNLV. DJ Johnson would have been a starter at K State if not for injury. Demetrious Floyd is getting significant minutes on a really good Stephen F Austin team. We could find a role for the good outside shooting of Garret Covington. We wanted Cam Biedscheid. Barnett is getting minutes for an outstanding Texas team. Yeah, Evans was a 2010 recruit while Jones was a 2011 recruit. I never got the impression that we were recruiting Jones, but he would have been a better use of a scholarship then our current seniors. Just a really tough kid who is going to find a way to produce. I have heard people compare Jordan Goodwin (sophomore at Althoff) to Roosevelt Jones. Looking at our roster, the coaches need to do a better job recruiting regardless of where the talent comes from.
