  1. Pretty difficult to argue with anything Bernie says in that article. I'm glad he's publicizing it, anything that might help humiliate the school into actually trying to build the program is good.
  2. It's not based on number, it's based on enthusiasm, noise, passion. A class A fan base means that the student body is involved. Our student turnout has always been so low as to be embarrassing. >so there are only 4 "class A" fan bases? and btw, saint >louis university averages more fans per game than duke. >granted they have a smaller arena, but still the fact >remains that our attendance is better than dukes. so how >can they be ranked ahead?
  3. Not Iraq again!! I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Last box score I saw on that one was $200 billion and counting with the added bonus of North Korea getting nukes while we were distracted. I hope SLU can do better!! >It seems to do something to you. > > >Ok Mr Bill. Your answer is to write a "Notre Dame" type >letter to father Biondi. Thanks for sharing. Not following >going on under the tarnished dome I have no idea what the >heck you're talking about. None the less if the letter >doesn't sound like something from AlQueda I'll sign it. > >Anything else? > >The solution to all of this is to win a bunch of games. I'm >confident we'll do that next year and the year after. I'm >guessing you aren't getting to see a lot of Billiken games >this year but looking at the box scores only. That's the >same mistake you and the dems made on Iraq.
  4. SLU is having a bad 50 years, with little hope of improvement in the next 50 at this pace. What have I done you ask? Tell me what I can do. Please. Two years ago I spoke with Doug Wollard. I offered to help organize a New York alumni gathering to raise donations for the stadium, nothing was ever followed up on. Maybe there aren't enough alumni in the area to justify such an event, but at least say that and follow up - if you're trying to run an efficient and class organization. But we aren't - we just aren't and it's already evident from the new AD. But give me a constructive suggestion on what I can do and I'll do it. Probably the best/only thing we can do is write a "Notre Dame" type letter to Biondi saying that the school needs to make a real commitment to the basketball program. Would it have any impact? Maybe not, but at least we can say we did something. Who on this board would sign it? Based on what I read on this board, far too many people are happy with the state of the program so maybe not many are interested. Savis is very nice but class b atmosphere. I'd rather play in West Pine and have the place truly rocking. How many class a fan bases are there I think Roy asked? I have no idea, but I think SLU could have one if the administration made it a true priority. Apologies to the band - it is great. >SLU is having a bad year as all teams have a bad year. > >Bernie plays fast and loose with the truth and then tries >intimidation and bombast to defend himself, rather than just >fess up. As a journalist, he should protect his own >integrity with diligence. He has been caught out, and now he >has shown poor judgement on top of lying.
  5. The problem is that many die-hard SLU fans have a huge chip on their shoulder. They won't admit that SLU is class B. Everything - every single thing - about SLU's basketball program is class B. The practice facilities, the coaches offices, the weight room, the fan base. It's all class B. You can deny it all you want, but denial won't change it. Do you want improvement? I do. The only way to get improvement is to admit the fundamental flaws and then demand improvement. The debacle of a season is more the administration's fault than anyone else's. If we had the facilities and stadium this program could move out of Class B. But it won't have those things until it has the full support of the administration. And because someone may bring it up, I don't think a powerpoint presentation that says we'll build a basketball stadium when the alumni give us $35 million is real support. I look at slubillikens.com and it's a joke. It's February 21 and the AD's monthly message is from January. It hasn't been redesigned in how long? Mis-spelled names of hall of famers? Claiming the PD is irrelevant? Give me a break. This school needs all the help it can get and claiming that a major media source in St. Louis is unimportant is just stupid. Maybe the AD should hire a PR person before she does anything else. Rule 101 - if you say you'll do something do it right and do it on time - even a stupid monthly message. Rambling I know, but it is so frustrating to see this program continue to wallow in mediocrity and read all the excuses the fans provide for it. It's unacceptable.
  6. You just can't defend 7-17, under any circumstances. I don't think it helps the program to try to put a positive spin on a 7-17 season. The program will only get better when the supporters demand it - isn't that capitalism AlumniFan? >Living in NYC you miss the opportunity to attend SLU's home >games. Sure, SLU is 7-17, and yes we are disappointed with >our win-loss record. Unfortunately, Frericks was lost for >the season with concussions, and Bryant isn't the same >player(when he played)because of foot and ankle injuries. As >a result SLU has to play three freshmen in a real men's >league. > >NYBILL, what you are missing is the fun and excitement of >watching the three freshmen and our 6-10 soph center play at >a high energy level. > >Even with a crappy record, this group of hard working >Billiken players bring fans back to the Savvis. In addition >to the exciting young Billikens, SLU has two really good >local recruits coming in next year. The young quality >players and the move to the A-10 gives most Billiken fans >something to look forward too. I'd wager that season ticket >sales will increase over the summer months even after this >piss-poor season. > >Disgraced.....no way, AD a disaster.....no way, is this a >team for front-running fans.....no way.
  7. I'm so glad Bernie wrote that. The press needs to start calling SLU out even more. The school should be disgraced by this year's performance. The AD has been a disaster - absolutely ZERO improvement, at least that I've seen. I mean give a real update on the stadium at least. They won't even do that. Saying it will be built and we're expecting a few major contributions is not a real update. We're more than $25 million away. Does she think we're that stupid. SLU basketball is an absolute joke right now, there's no sense denying it. It's just no fun and until fans start putting feet to the fire SLU will try to skate by on the cheap and mediocre. Thanks Bernie! >http://forums.stltoday.com/viewtopic.php?t=236312 > >"SLU fans are some of the most amazing creatures around. >The program is an embarrassment, an inexcusable >embarrassment at that, and yet these fans continue to act as >if they're being persecuted by anyone who types in a couple >of sentences that raise questions. Poor little >SLU...everyone is so mean to their little SLU boys. >Remarkable. If you're happy with what's going on with SLU >basketball, knock yourself out. Others have higher >standards. And I won't lower my standards just because some >of you are living in 1947." > >"And furthermore ... I don't even know why the Post-Dispatch >wastes resources covering SLU basketball. We could make such >better use of our budget money and manpower." > > >Pardon my french, but the guy sure sounds like a first-class >jackass.
  8. How the mighty have fallen. >Thanks. I soon as I asked the question, i found an answer. >Before that we were in the Metropolitan Collegiate Athletic >Conference, the Horizon, and then the Great Midwest. Also >in my searching, I found that when the AP released their >very first top 25 in 1948, that we were the very first #1 AP >team EVER. Pretty interesting stuff.
  9. On Ian, I didn't see the game but 7 rebounds in 45 minutes doesn't excite me. He's 6'10" how could he not get that many in 45 minutes? I'm glad he hit the throws but I would hope he'd have a better ability to rebound.
  10. I'm not sure how you can say that a season is irrelevant. This season is an absolute disaster - a worse case scenario. It has killed thousands of fans' enthusiasm for the program. Can he get it back? Of course, fans are fickle and a good season next year we're right back there. But you can't excuse Soderberg for ruining this season - he has nobody to blame but himself. I've always thought we should have gone with Gregory. Even last season when we beat Dayton you could just look at the recruits Gregory was bringing in and see that his team will be better long term. He brings in athletic, big players. It's great Soderberg got Tommie and Kevin, but ANY SLU coach should have gotten those two guys - they're in our backyard and there's no excuse for not getting them. We need a coach who gets those guys and some real players from farther afield because our backyard isn't deep enough. I sure hope Soderberg can start doing that but he's shown no ability to thus far. I also hope Soderberg proves me wrong on the Gregory decision over the next few years, but I'm not betting on it. >when Gregory took over Dayton's cupboard was more than half >full, yet as I recall we beat them here the first year and >there the second. SO Brad is 2-1 agaisnt him. > >This season is irrelevant to me with regards to Brad >coaching, I want to see what he does with KL, TL, DP, DB, >IV, LM over the next two years.
  11. It may be very interesting to you - and I might scan it - but I don't think most people would read it. It's just not that interesting to most readers. As to Thicks' post - I'm not saying SLU can't overcome those things. Marquette has, Georgetown did (although they've fallen back some recently), I'm sure others have also. But until we do it consistently, there's not going to be much interest in the program. >nybill said, > >"Investigative Report: >Why can't a small school with an urban campus, inadequate >work-out and practice facilities, a high proportion of >commuting students, that does not offer athlete-friendly >majors and whose fan base consists primarily of middle-aged >overweight men recruit top level division 1 talent?" > >small school with an urban campus - show the other schools >with similar geography and layout and discuss the success or >lack of it that they have had. > >inadequate workout and practice facility discuss the >facilities of other schools and the success they have or >have not had > >what schools student demographic actually comprises of and >find out from the typical slu students why that affects >their likeliness of attending a slu basketball game and what >other factors contribute to the students attendance. > >detail the academic requirements of saint louis university, >how that relates to our athletes and how that affects our >ability to effectively recruit. > >who are the slu fans and boosters, how do they feel about >the changes in personnel over the last 10 years and how has >it affected their support (both financially and spirit) in >that time frame. > >i.e. nybill, you just gave the post 5 subjects for stories >that imo would be very interesting reads. at least compared >to ice skating and high school fitness instructors.
  12. Good morning! I don't understand that attack - sleep well tonight though because I don't hate you. Investigative Report: Why can't a small school with an urban campus, inadequate work-out and practice facilities, a high proportion of commuting students, that does not offer athlete-friendly majors and whose fan base consists primarily of middle-aged overweight men recruit top level division 1 talent? That would be a hell of a series of articles.
  13. Come on, Roy. I thought you were a capitalist but it doesn't sound like you understand capitalism. The post-dispatch is a for-profit entity. It would put Kirkwood's J.V. girl's softball team on the front page of the sports page everyday if it would sell more papers. When a team loses, most fans lose interest. That's good thing. SLU basketball should fall off the map because of this season - that will remind the coaches, the players and the athletic department of how unacceptable these types of seasons are. If people want to see a bunch of jokers play, they can watch an intramural game. 4-12 is a joke and doesn't deserve coverage - but more importantly, from a profit perspective, is completely uninteresting to all but the most die-hard fans. >fyi, I received the following response to my e-mail to mr >starks yesterday where i questioned why no story yesterday >in the Post: > >"Roy: > >Thanks for your note about the SLU coverage in Wednesday's >paper. > >We have made the decision to scale back coverage of SLU >basketball, at least in terms of game advances, partly >because of their record and partly due to the level of >interest among our readers. But that does not mean that we >are not aggressively covering the basketball program. We >will still cover all games, though there will be a few >selected road trips that we will use freelance reporters, >and will continue to do features on the team, as warranted. > >As to your point that the newspapers' coverage contributes >to fan attendance, I would disagree. It is natural for any >publication to scale back some coverage of a team that is >having a poor season. > > >Larry Starks" > >of course i have already sent him a reply asking why a >losing season is a reason to "scale back" coverage? i asked >if in reality it wouldnt be a reason to actually investigate >and report on the state of the basketball programs at slu. >find out what happened, what is being done, nose around >about recruiting, etc. i pointed out that while attendance >is down, our message board is as active as ever and in >reality the fact that just 5-10 years ago, the billikens >were top 10 in the nation in attendance, thus there is a >sleeping audience that wants to know. > >everyone needs to drop larry a note imo.
  14. I think a .500 season would be a tremendous rebound. I don't think we'll see double digit wins this season.
  15. This is college basketball - a big part of the team is going to be new every single season. You have to adapt. I'm not saying we should expect to win the conference in years where we have lots of new players, but we shouldn't be 1-5 against the competition we've played. Give me a break. I would suggest you've lost perspective if you are defending these results. Unfortunately, it's pretty difficult to be constructive with a team that is lucky to break 60 points. This team is very, very bad. It's very dangerous in college basketball to talk about the new recruits all the time. New recruits are coming in every single season. You can't just say "who cares that we're horrible this season, we've got great recruits next year." It's obvious that many people on this board care about this season - as they should - every season counts. Looks like this one is a lost cause. I like our coach, I don't love him though. This guy has made some major recruiting mistakes with kids that haven't made the grade. Those mistakes are a direct cause of this "lost" season. >The point is you play people who have their head together, >in practice and during the game. ANYONE who can lead the >team in rebounds in multiple games and gut it on defense >deserves to be the starter, and to play major minutes. > >We have a typical Bills team which, unfortunately, is short >a couple horses. Almost half the rotation is new to the >team, and everyone is having trouble putting the ball in the >ocean. > >For everyone who wants to rant about this and that without >noting much constructive, remember your kid(or nephew) and >the basketball skills they possessed at age eight, and `how >much they improved by age eleven. Many of the players on the >team are in the midst of making a similar transition, only >these games count. Perspective is essential if you want to >***** and complain. > >With the stallions we are getting in the next two years and >the coaching staff we have, we are two players and two years >away from the second or third round of the NCAA tournament. >The last time we went through a similar start, we had Carlos >Skinner, Melvin Robinson, McGlother Irvin, and the 25th best >recruiting class in the country with Claggett, Winfield, >Highmark, Ryan, and the forward from North County, and we >went 5-23. Two years later we were dancing.
