Recruiting - 2016

Recommended Posts

There is definitely something to the fact that they will base it on readers. I think they stopped sending Stu on trips towards the end of the season probably because not enough people kept reading game stories of losses.

However there is some disinterest on his part too. He didn't even retweet the news or say anything about the fact SLU is in his top 4. That requires basically no effort on his part. I mean Brian haenchen wrote a little story about the news for insidestl.com. In general SLU recruiting probably wouldn't be a big read on stltoday, but I would think the top local kid being the recruit changes that.

I would like to see some local media talk to Justin about SLU. I was disappointed when Frank had Larry Hughes on his show the other day and they talked about Jayson as a player but not really much into his recruitment.

I know it's frustrating for me to see the lack of SLU coverage here. STLToday is basically my source for keeping up with local teams with me not living in the area anymore. I guess it will take a couple of Sweet 16 appearances, like VCU, Butler, and Creighton, to get the attention of local media. You look at the IndyStar and they have good coverage of Butler. However, that's a basketball-crazed state, so maybe not a good comparison. It'd be interesting to see if Marquette fans get similar treatment in their local paper, given their off year too. I don't know the answer.

It does require more winning. Even the past couple years Bernie would go to some games and write about them along with Tom but when losing, he won't because it doesn't get the clicks as much as a column about what Matheny had for breakfast and why that is going to help him with the bullpen situation would. Same thing goes for the Blues locally too, the columns decrease as the wins decrease.

However, Stu is not one of their top columnists like Bernie. Asking Bernie to write about SLU over Cardinals would cost him easily thousands of hits on the article. Stu is the beat writer for the Billikens and whatever other assignment they put him on. I would think he could try and make an effort to talk to somebody locally about Jayson and SLU being in his top 4. I don't think the management at the post would not allow him to try and do that because as the poster above said St. Louis trying to get swimming qualifiers in the Olympics in 2020 is a huge area of interest.

There is a set number of times you can view a particuliar player. Crews cannot go to every game Jayson plays.

I don't believe that is true as long as the coach is not meeting with the player and his parents it is not considered contact with

the player. Crews went to many of Wyatt Yes's games at Parkway West this year but that is not contact. He can shake his hand

and say nice game and that is not counted as contact.

What if he wears a very clever disguise...? Like Fletch?

I could be mistaken, but I thought that was the rule, too. Thought there was talk about it when Soderberg was coach because he could circumvent it due to being Kramer's dad. Maybe it's changed?

I too thought there was a rule on the number of high school games a coach could watch but it may have changed. I searched on google last night for clarification and found nothing either way.

Evaluations and Contact rules are 130 recruiting-person days during academic year recruiting and evaluation periods. If two coaches go see him play a game that is 2 days. Please see the attached latest NCAA Dl Recruting Guide. https://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/Mens%20Basketball%20Recruiting%20Guide2014.pdf

JC could easily go to all the games. Touranaments are a separate issue and don't have that same requirements.

The link you posted said no more the seven combined contacts and evaluations during the academic year. I don't see how he could easily go to all the games when those are considered evaluations.

Also this part:

Visits to a Prospective Student-Athlete’s Educational Institution

Institutional staff members may visit a PSA's educational institution on not more than one occasion during a particular week within a recruiting or evaluation period, regardless of the number of PSAs enrolled in the institution or whether any PSA is contacted on that occasion. During the July evaluation period, there are no limitations on the number of times an institutional staff member may visit a PSA's educational institution.

Hoping that he doesn't work in compliance.

It is a rule that can be stretched for sure especially if the games are at the PSA's school.

JC can go to one game a week at the PSA's school.

But he can only watch a total of 7 games during the academic year. And, that is only if he has no contacts with him in the academic year. Read the rules you posted.

The 130 total is for all potential athletes combined. It isn't 130 for each individual athlete you are recruiting.

Precisely. That is why when people say "well as long as we are in the top 3 that is great!" It is shortsighted. The recruiting days out into watching Tatum will be maxed out I am sure. If he goes toDuke, how much did SLU waste on him versus other area prospects?

The good news, I suppose, with the increased talent in the area for 16/17, the staff could target games against other D1 type players and get a twofer.

The tournaments and summer leagues count differently which is why all the coaches are there.

FWIW, a tweet from Jon Rothstein... The A 10 should be much improved in 15-16. URI, Dayton, VCU, GW, and Davidson will all enter the season aiming for a bid. A sleeper? SLU.

-from his keyboard to the Great Billiken in the sky to results on the court

-he's more optimistic than I am and I really, really hope I am wrong

We get it. But the key point that you and others were wrong on is that Crews and other SLU coaches WERE NOT ALLOWED to attend more than 7 high school games of FBJT last season.

As long as we get JT I don't mind being WRONG all day long. BTW.........I never said JC went to all his games.
