SLU Soccer Rankings (week 4)

With an impressive win over Creighton SLU moves into all the polls (better late than never with some):

NSCAA (coaches) Poll: 10th (last week 20th)

Soccer America: 6th (last week 15th)

College Soccer News: 16th (last week RV)

Top Drawer: 19th (last week nothing)

Massey Computer: 10th (28th last week)

Unofficial RPI (too early and guy does not have all games but): 5th (last week 14th)

Only Soccer America ranks SLU ahead of both of the two teams it beat. Top Drawer has Creighton still 5th with SLU 19th.

The schedule is looking a bit better as Indiana is doing well although most of the A-10 is not. George Mason has been winning while VCU and Dayton look to be good (but are only treading water against tougher schedules). Davidson is doing really well against D-1 teams. SLU's RPI should hold in the at-large zone as long as their record is decent in the A-10.

Davidson is now ranked #1 in the unofficial RPI (there is an obvious mistake as their tie with a D-II team is included so their RPI is even better). This just goes to show how biased human polls are by things that should not matter (conference and expectations). Neither SLU nor Davidson were expected to be good but even after they played well (Davidson beat a very good Cal Poly team to start the year--Cal Poly has since tied UCLA) they were ignored by polls. Obviously beating Virginia will get Davidson some votes but College Soccer News did not have them even getting votes in their top 30 earlier this week.

I think the A-10 will get at least one at-large berth this year (after last year's weak scheduling fiasco) and even two is a possibility.

I was curious about Davidson's tie against D-II Belmont Abbey. First, the game was stopped in the 77th minute because of weather. It was a tie but without the benefit of 40 more minutes. Also, Belmont scored first from just over the midfield line when the Davidson 2nd string goalie was off his line. Clearly some of the polls are using this against Davidson but the details tell you that this is not an ordinary tie. Davidson is 4-0-1 against DI opponents with 2 quality wins.
