Recruit

Recruit (1/7)

  1. I don't think anyone is advocating hiring Charlie back. He's smarter than that. But I think your disrespect is unfounded.
  2. >"He won the first time around with Grawer's players." > >All two of them. Same guys that went 4-25 the year before. >One of them did not start on that team. Which is weird >since they only had what, 6 players? > >"And then won with Larry." > >Your point? Still had to coach them with the best player >being a freshman, which makes it more impressive. Do you >think Lorenzo or Brad would have done that? I don't. > >"His recruiting overall was extremely inconsistent and as >time went on at SLU he lost interest in doing things as a >coach like recruiting a talent evaluation that it takes to >win." > >Actually it got a lot better after he solidified his team as >a post season threat. Larry Hughes, Baniak, Tatum, Love, >Jeffers (a top 25 juco according to sporting news) and Perry >(another top 100 player). Romar's and Brad's best players >were Spoon's recruits. > >He coached here for 7 years, a fairly long time for a >college like St. Louis. If Gillen could do that, I say go >for it. > >If you discount Gillen, are you discounting Knight at Texas >Tech, Altman at Creighton, Willard at Holy Cross, Bennett at >Wash St and Wisconsin, Coles at Miami (OH), etc. FINALLY! Someone with an accurate view of SLU history.
  3. >He won the first time around with Grawer's players. And >then won with Larry. It is beyond me how you refuse to give Charlie credit for his success. "The first year with Grawer's Players"--- How did Grawer do with Grawers players? "The rest with Larry"--- I thought he didn't recruit? You can't have it both ways. Whats wrong with giving him credit for being a good coach and recruiter? Maybe you don't remember that SLU is tough school to recruit for. Charlie went to the NCAA tournament 3 years and the NIT once. How has it been done better at SLU?
  4. >>>And what is the deal with this board and it's disdain for >>>Charlie? It seems regulated to the board, not to the rest >>>of St. Louis, at least the fans I talk to. Did he mistreat >>>all you Bill club people? Not that I think it that matters. >>> It seems to me, the fan base in St. Louis figured out there >>>were hard times coming after Spoon left and stopped coming >>>to the games. >Huh? No the rule should be taking everyone at face value >for their own merits. JT-3 is doing just fine, thanks. I also don't understand the Charlie disdain. The fans and the city embraced the Bills during the "Spoonball Era". Charlie had success that has not been replicated. As for his son, maybe you need to do a little research into his merits. After leaving SLU, he went on to take over as head coach at Wabash Valley and lead them to a record of 36-1. Which also earned him NJC Coach of the Year and the NJC National Championship. He left there to rejoin Charlie at UNLV. And was named Interim HC and showed that he had a dramatically different style than his dad and finished out the season 6-3. I think he is a young, hungry coach that would breathe some life into SLU's stagnant program.
  5. >We don't think that, we're saying that damn well better be >what we get for such a sudden move by the administration. > Valid point. You would think that with such an erratic move. But realistically, the SLU job doesn't have the teeth to get a Big Name coach.
  6. Outside of St Louis, I don't think very many would recognize SLU as D-1 either. What makes SLU such an attractive job that everyone thinks there will be a line of BIG NAME coaches beating down the door?
  7. >It's fact. I'm not picking on anyone. Those are nobodies >on the basketball scene. Exactly. So is SLU. What makes you think that SLU is superior? Their conference (HA)? Their success in the last 10 years (HA)?
  8. >You couldn't really be serious about SEMO and UMKC as bball >schools, could you? You can't be serious about the arrogance to think that SLU is above them.
  9. I think the fact that he was a finalist for both of those jobs speaks to the fact that he is being taken seriously.
  10. Hardly. He has a pretty impressive track record. Check out this link: http://www.goutsa.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPS...0&Q_SEASON=2006
  11. Jay Spoonhour would be the ideal coach to bring in... - Great resume - Success: 42-4; NJC Coach of the Year; NJCAA Championship; Int. Head Coach-UNLV - He knows how to recruit for SLU, which as we all know is not easy - He has the recruiting connections - He would have great alumni support - Young and upcoming coach with ties to the community
