Jim Crews on with Frank

Recommended Posts

Really most non- SLU talk.

Heard part of it and the only thing of significance was a comment by JC that he thought MY needed to lose some of his 240 lbs but then they found out that his body fat number was only 9 %. He talked about MY being a DE type who would play the 3 and some 4. He only talked about MY because Frank asked about him. after this discussion, JC talked in general terms about liking all the FR and then, as an afterthought, all the SO and JRs too. I came in on the part of the discussion were JC was talking about not just throwing offers out there to a large number of kids, but rather being cautious looking at the entire picture, including the family and a couple of other factors.

Good news on MY--he'll have enough of an adjustment to make learning to play D, we didn't need problems with weight as well.

Speaking of weight, possibly 9 of our top 10 players this year will weigh 200 or more pounds. A turnaround from years past when Cincy usually bullied us with a roster full of 200-pounders. Recruiting close to 10 guys in a year is also a turnaround from the days of 2-3 in a year and then adroitly "saving a scholarship."

I take back any comments I made insinuating Yarbrough may be out of shape. 6'6 240 with just 9 percent body fat, I'll take that.

Also like Crews' take on his recruiting strategy. He doesn't just throw offers out there. He builds a relationship with the recruit first then makes an offer. It won't work all the time but I think it attracts the type of players we want at SLU.

I have not seen the results that make me like Crews' recruiting strategy. We have missed on most of our top targets since he took over.

We have always missed on most of our top targets, even with RM. We identify good players early and they are interested. Then they blow up, other schools with bigger names move in. They lose interest and we move on in search of other under appreciated talent. It worked for RM and it can work for JC. If anything, we are winning more battles now. We beat out Creighton for Bartley. I believe we beat out Colorado or some other Big 12 or PAC 10 school for Jolly. We beat out SEC schools for Roby. We are always going to have very long odds against the UKs, KUs, and the like, but we are winning the battles we need to win to be competitive.

How often are we in recruiting battles with the elite programs like UK and KU (Jayson Tatum is the only guy I can think of)? This past year we lost the battles for our primary targets to programs like Xavier and Butler. At some point we have to start winning some of these recruiting battles for our primary targets instead of relying upon underrecruited guys to play above their ability. With three straight tournament appearances and improved facilities, we need to aim higher in my opinion.

Well, let's see. TL was headed to Wash St (PAC 12), AY a Nova Transfer that Pitt wanted, the previously mentioned Bartley, Roby, and Jolly, RA supposedly had interest from Duke. Not sure who was after MY, MR, and Gilliam. Overall, not too bad. Granted we've lost some locals we wished had stayed home, and a few others who chose BCS'ers. Let's wait and see how this works.

That kind of proves ChosenOne's point, though, right? We beat out Washington State and a Pitt team that probably couldn't promise the kid much playing time (at least, relative to us)? That's something, I guess, but not much. I agree with you that I think we're headed in the right direction. But we also have a lot to offer kids - tournament appearances, a beautiful new arena, greater fan support, etc. - so I think we should expect the staff to really start entering into and winning recruiting battles for higher-rated recruits. That we're in it with Tatum I think says a lot, so hopefully we'll continue that assertiveness on the recruiting trail.

I've never understood why people want us to change our recruiting and team building strategy after 3 straight NCAA tournament appearances. I want the staff to identify guys who will fit into our system and buy into what we are trying to do. If those players are 5 star recruits, great! If they are borderline 3 star recruits, great! As we should know from playing teams like Washington, recruiting stars don't win games. Just my 2 cents.

I don't know enough to say what our recruiting strategy is or how it should be changed, but based on our recent success and improved facilities I would like to see us land more of our primary targets which we have struggled to do since Crews took over. Looking at our staff, who is sold as a high level recruiter?

Lets see, we used dto get a few two stars and the left overs, now we are landing three stars. One step at a time just keep progessing!!!

Our recent success was due to 3 factors. A HOF coach who built the foundation. Kids who were committed to developing themselves,ie Conk, DE, JJ, to name a few. And a team first attitude that took buying into the idea D wins games. If we continue along that road we'll be fine. That said, those guys did bring talent to the table that other teams passed on.

I agree with this and the only thing missing initially you covered in your last sentence. You have to have talent to win at a high level and the past three seasons we have had a lot of talented players. This upcoming team excites me because while we will have growing pains these young kids will be able to play a lot and we could be experiencing the beginning of another nice run similar to 2010 when we relied mostly on underclassmen and juniors Brian Conklin and Kyle Cassity. Having not seen any of the incoming freshmen or enough from the soon to be sophomores, I have no idea what to expect.
