He's heralded to the point that Saint Louis University coveted him, as did others; that Rivals.com gave him three stars, for what it's worth; and that WMU's coaching staff chose him over Cadillac's Ben Simons, who is still undecided. The difference between the Broncos' other top recruits and Hutcheson: WMU didn't join his recruitment until the end of July

"I really liked the coaches and what they did with program the last few years," Hutcheson said Tuesday, hours after choosing WMU over runners-up Santa Clara and Saint Louis, as well as offers from Toledo and Albany, which was the first to recruit him. "All the coaches are very knowledgeable about the game and coach Hawkins is a great basketball mind. All the players they've recruited are high-class players. I don't know, I just felt good there.

He had an official visit planned at Saint Louis later this month, but already knew the program and its people, having toured the campus and facilities on his own dime. "I just liked Western Michigan better," said Hutcheson, who called Kalamazoo "the perfect distance away from home," and didn't fancy nearby Northern Iowa when it tried to jump back in late after a period of hot-and-cold interest.

This quote looks significant:

"The fact that I could see the floor during my freshman year was important," Hutcheson said. "That's a big deal to me. I like to play."

Perhaps he doesn't feel confident he'd get ample playing time at SLU, because of the large number of players just one year ahead of him.

Perhaps he didn't look closely at the roster to realize only 3 of the current players are taller than 6'5". Any big who can play will see the court next season.

is an example of how recruiting is an art of appealing to subjective preferences of teenagers. I have never been to Western Michigan and frankly don't know anything about it, but I can't imagine I would like the campus and facilities more than SLU. Obviously, this kid feels otherwise. I can't fault him for it.

This is an excellent post. Kids are fickle, and the parents can be worse. Sometimes a local kid wants to go away to school. Sometimes a player just connects with a coach. Some kids might not like an urban campus, etc. While I've never been to the campus at WMU, I have a cousin who went to school there. It does have the big state university feel, I think about 25K students and all of the typical college campus life you would would expect. SLU is MUCH improved on that front over the past few years.

Maybe our coaching staff has been getting ahead of themselves. Hearing rumors of pending verbals but our recruits seem to be going to other schools.

This kid sounds great. Athletic with size, I'd like to see a 6'7 shooting guard in a SLU uniform.

You would think going up against Western Michigan is a recruiting battle we can win every time but guess not.

Was this the signing that was hinted at earlier in the week? By reputable sources (even mine)? I don't know --- I'm inclined to think not because he was still going to "visit" us officially. The counter to that was that he was already here on his own dime. Makes one wonder.

A couple of notes --- WOW! Who wouldn't want to be compared to Jon Workman or Levi Rost? Must've been a while ago --- they weren't on last year's Broncos roster.

Loving WMU's program and the fact that "they win" is anothe subjective issue which I think footsie points out real well in his comment on collegiate recruits and the whims of teenagers. I have nothing to combat that statement with because even though its two NITs and once NCAA dance bid in six years of the coach (50%), that's a heck of a lot better than what we have to show over the last six years. Although all three post-season bids came in the coach's first three years --- he followed that with 14- adn 16-win seasons but did post a 20-win season last year. Of course, so did Brad two years ago.

Western's roster last year lists nine seniors. NINE! I don't know what's in their recruiting class but the four back this year are 5'11", 6'3", 6'5" and 6'9" with the tallest being a senior this year. The short kid only played in ten games and two others got enough minutes per game to be role players. The other is their top returning gun, and it looks like the coach went almost 10 deep in his rotation. So the team victory total can be attributed somewhat to interchangable senior parts working in unison.

Not a good sign, if in fact we really were hot for this kid, for a HC with RM's reputation to lose a player to Western Michigan and its ilk.

Still hoping for some good news in the next few days or weeks.

I'm not convinced this guy was RM's big recruit. Jonathan Smith is the same size and, quite possibly, RM stopped pursuing him. Not predicting whom RM will land, but I have to believe that RM is pursuing guys that BCS schools also are pursuing.
