Recruit (1/7)

  1. The opinions varied on Brad in Madison. He was placed in a very difficult situation with Dick Bennett quiting in season. This even took Brad by surprise. There were high expectations for the team. There were many issues behind the decision on Brad in Madison. Among them is the AD did not want it dictated to him who his new coach would be. Like many ADs he wanted his own man in place. That being said it would have been interesting to see what Brad could have done with a reasonable amount of support at SLU. Maybe he should have demanded more? Of course he was in no position to do so. As a long time Badger fan I can tell the change for UW athletics occurred when those on the top decided to make a commitment to having a top notch athletic dept. Very few coaches can pull programs out of the cellar without the full support of the universities chancellor and athletic director. The demands Majerus has made for changes SLU will help whether or not he takes the job. The new arena is great first step. But that is all it will be if it is not followed by a complete and funded commitment to the program from the very top. Majerus could recognize the program was doomed to mediocrity without the changes.
  2. That is simply not true. Brad was gone either way.
  3. Micheal Taylor from Milw. Marshall was very impressive at the Wisconsin coaches all star games and scrimmages after his senior season. Very explosive athlete. http://www.chipola.edu/extrac/athl/basketb...2004/roster.htm
  4. It is the lack of financial commitment to the SLU program that is the problem. Romar did not go from a marginal coach to a an up and comer all on his own. Washington made a commitment to the hoops program. Soderberg can compete in the A-10 if he gets the support from the administration.
  5. To clarify for you. As I said previously the UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN places the limit on their men's basketball roster. That includes walk ons. This has nothing to do with the NCAA. The only player on that roster that Ryan recruited was Adrian Tigert. Is anyone holding a gun to these kids heads making them walk on? They are kids who want to be in the program even if they pay there own way.
  6. >D1 men have 13 scholarships to offer. D1 women can give 15 >scholarships. >I have never heard the "walk-ons" being limited in number! They are at Wisconsin. It has something to do with Title IX compliance. The women's basketball program can have more walk ons. Schools with footbal programs have a large disparity in number of athletes by gender. The schools have to get creative as to how they will comply. Bo Ryan has been lobbying to increase the number on by two. In the past few seasons because of injuries and how scholarship numbers have worked out former assistants Rob Jeter and Tony Bennett became practice players as well as coaches.
  7. >Would depend on which team in the MVC was interested. To >say Indiana State or SMS wants him then probably not. SIU-C >- take another look but I still think their program will >start showing a decline. I have reason to believe the coach I talked to was thinking more along the lines of Northern Iowa from the MVC. He also said that koch might end up going higher than the MVC. It is a possibility that Bo Ryan could offer Koch a situation that he would walk on for a number of years before earning a scholarship. Ryan offered Ryan Tillema 3 years on scholarship for 5 years in the program (Tillema would have to redshirt his first year). Tillema decided to take a full ride at UWGB. Btw, UWGB has offered Koch a 3 out of 4 year deal. They have no scholarship currently open. I suspect that will change by the end of the season. In regards to Bo Ryan stockpiling players at Wisconsin. Due to Title IX concerns the men’s basketball program is limited by the university to either 13 or 15 (forget the actual number) players including walk ons. I don't know if Ricky Franklin will end up playing at Wisconsin or not. He does have a chance but will have to take care of his academics. Franklin's guardian is a UW Regent, which is his in with university as much, or more than his basketball talents. His only D1 offer is from St. Francis in NY. Franklin said he always wanted to play for the Badgers. The reasons kids might have been willing to walk on at Platteville with only a chance to play were 1) Four D3 national championships 2)the winningest coach at any level during the 90's 3) Bo Ryan never had a losing season after his very first in the mid 80's. If you were a Wisconsin kid being recruited by other D3 schools it would be similar to a D1 kid turning down Indiana St. for a chance to walk on at Duke and play for Coach K. The fact is that there were/are no scholarships in the D3 WIAC conference anyway.
  8. Talked to a D2 coach who was recruiting Koch up until spring. Koch started making major strides late in high school season and in spring ball. The coach knew he had lost him by mid spring and he would be at least a mid major D1 kid. He told me that in his opinion he was at least a MVC player.
  9. Koch is a late bloomer who has come on like gang busters. Up until this spring he was being looked at by mostly D2 schools. A college head coach told me this spring that if he continued his current rate of improvement he would be a high major D1 recruit by the end of summer. Koch looks to be on track to do just that.
  10. >Well, Rammer just ripped on Crean and MU's SID. Wish I was >paying closer attention so I could directly quote. But he >basically called them the biggest jerks in college >basketball that he has come across. This is no big secret. Earlier in the season Crean threatened to beat up a Memphis booster during a game. The MU SID was making disparaging remarks to a member of the media about a high school player that turned MU down. I could go on. Jerks would probably be nice way of putting it.
  11. Tillema is taller and a little more athletic than Drew Diener. Diener was basically a zone buster. The only comparison I can come up with is a poor mans Steve Novak. Not as tall but is tougher.....as if that says anything. I question who he guards in a major program that plays mostly man to man defense.
  12. Tillema is a 6'7 wing forward. Very good shooter. Skilled offensive player. Average athlete. Not particularly physical or aggressive. Wanted to be recruited by Wisconsin. Probably not a great fit and likely won't happen. Right now he is likely a mid major type player. He is worth following. Since he does shoot the ball so well with range he may fit Brad's offensive system. Landry played very well in Wisconsin's advanced camp. He is likely the best player in the state in '05. Although it is arguable that Wesley Mathews is the top player. UW leads but UConn has become involved.
  13. Landry is a 6'6 combo forward. Athletic and aggressive. Plays for a very good HS program and coach at Milw. Vincent. Landry can face the basket on offense, but really needs to work on his ballhandling to be considered a true wf. Landry's brother Carl has signed with Purdue after two years in JC. Marcus is the better player at a similar age IMO. I have read that Marq has offered Landry. I don't believe Wisconsin has yet. The connection to Purdue is likely former UW pg and current Purdue assistant Tracy Webster.
