What is the connection with Louisville for this event? It just seems strange to only have Louisville and SLU as the main event with 3 cupcakes?

I have no idea what the connection is between the teams outside of the former C-USA days and the recent NCAA round of 32 matchup. There are a few other events out there with identical formats (3 mid-majors, 2 higher-level teams) that also have some puzzling headliner neutral site games in my opinion. For example:

Pittsburgh vs. Davidson in NYC in the Gotham Classic

Ohio State vs. Memphis in Miami in the Naismith Hall of Fame Invitational

Kentucky vs. South Florida in Miami in the Naismith Hall of Fame Classic (I suppose I understand this one since the USF head coach is Orlando Antigua who was formerly a UK assistant)

There were also a few like this last year. SMU played in an event that gave them three home games against mid-majors and then a 4th game on Indiana's home floor. Didn't seem like a very attractive exempt event for a team that had top-25 potential last season.

Hartford was bad last year and lost 6 seniors (including Jack Sikma's kid). They have 3 Aussies and the potential to be very bad. Columbia however is a decent team and expecting some tournament (possibly low level though) action. Rothstein on Columbia:

4. Columbia is the team to watch in the Ivy League next season

Harvard and Yale will be the teams that people identify from the periphery, but the Lions have a legitimate chance to shake things up and reach the NCAA Tournament. Siyani Chambers (Harvard) and Justin Sears (Yale) are the two most well known players in the Ivy League from a national perspective, but Columbia guard Maodo Lo may be the one player in the conference who has a chance to play at the next level. The 6-3 guard averaged 18.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.3 assists last season while shooting an impressive 43.1 percent from 3-point range. The presence of Lo along with off-guard Kyle Castlin (10.3 points in 14-15 as a freshman) and the return of 6-7 forward Alex Rosenberg (16.0 points in 13-14) --- who did not play last season due to injury --- should give Lions' coach Kyle Smith a chance to make a run at the field of 68. A former assistant at Saint Mary's, Smith led Columbia to an impressive 17-point win at Villanova in 2012 and also took Michigan State to the wire in East Lansing a year later. There's only one thing left for him to do with the Lions: win the Ivy League.

So we get both of those? I thought it was one or the other.

Yes, SLU gets both the 3 games in the Bahamas in August, then the 2 exhibition games vs. D2/NAIA level opponents (or 1 exhibition vs. D2/NAIA and 1 closed door scrimmage vs. a D1 opponent) in October/November just before the start of the regular season the weekend of November 13th.

NCAA rules allow programs to take a foreign tour once every four academic years. To give a reference point, the last foreign tour SLU took was during the 2011-2012 season to Canada where they played 5 games in August vs. Carleton, Windsor, etc. Then in November they had exhibition games at home vs. Cardinal Stritch (NAIA) and St. Ambrose (NAIA) before the Conklin Smash season took off.

In case you were wondering who SLU was going to play in the Bahamas there have been a mix of teams in the past with "local" club teams that mix in a few "out of season" professionals (UNC lost to the Providence Storm last year), national teams and reserves from the Caribbean (Puerto Rico Reserves and Dominican National team there last year) as well as some European pro teams also training there (last year a French pro team played Kentucky there twice).

If someone can summarize what we know about the 2015 schedule (e.g. list of games and dates), I will put it on the front page

have the scores from our last two games from last year been posted yet?

I wonder if we're going to open against SIUC at home again this year?

SIUC is hosting Air Force on opening night (Nov. 13) in the Missouri Valley - Mountain West Challenge, then hosts Florida A&M on Nov. 15, so SLU likely won't see them until after Thanksgiving. Especially considering there will need to be the three home games for the Brooklyn Hoops Classic during the Nov. 13-24 period before the trip to NYC.

  • 2 weeks later...

St. Joe's released the non-conference schedule today. I can't remember - is it customary for all A10 teams to do this at about the same time, or is it up to the individual programs?

Individual programs I think - but generally most schools release in the same few weeks - but I do not think it is coordinated.
