Article on SLU freshmen

Recommended Posts

Not much really in the article - just that the 6 freshmen are working hard and understand that there is playing time to be had. Usual stuff - some have to get bigger/stronger and some have to lose weight. This article could have been written every year and just update the names and numbers of freshmen.

I think the key is that we got them all in early. Physical prep is big but so is learning the system terms and getting to know the expectations. A lot of turn over but I like it that all 6 are in early. I don't remember a time when that's happened usually we were still trying to fill or get a visa etc.

“I would love for all of them to play, all six of them,” he said. “They do as they’re told, they work hard, they don’t talk back, they don’t complain. It’s rare to get that out of freshmen, and when you’ve got six guys doing that, it’s real promising. They should be all right.”

Could this be a reference to some of our early departures?

Jolly, Roby and Yarbrough seem to have the best shots at PT due to size. ..not to discount Travis Diener and Spud Webb.

While size is important at some point talent will prevail. If a kid can shoot the lights out of the basket then he will play regardless of if he is under weight or over weight.

D comes first

I am not so sure for next year - I agree a player will have to at least play avg defense if he can shoot very well - I am concerned about where the scoring will come from so offense might be able to overcome a slight defensive under play.

I am looking forward to seeing Mike Crawford become a serious sniper. Plus, I believe McBroom will also be a consistent 3-pt threat.

Agree, I see MC as a key player off the bench giving the Bills instant offense.. I see starters as AY, AM, JM, RA, and TL.

Among Manning, Agbeko, and Lancona, who's going to chase a guard around? I don't see such a lineup being very likely except in very brief stretches against tall teams.

MC is a starter, probably from day one--I'd be very surprised if he isn't, and if he does not significantly ramp up his scoring average as a sophomore.

And one of the freshmen will probably be starting by January. possibly even 2--or at least, getting big minutes.

Which of the freshmen do you see as possibly getting into the starting lineup (or taking major minutes)? Related to this answer, who do you see the freshman replacing in the starting lineup?

My guess would be the best PG (my opinion, Bartley) stepping in for AM. The competition for minutes will be fierce this year. I hope to see Yarbrough fighting to take minutes from MC at the #3, Jolly doing likewise for time at the 5 and Reggie and Tanner having a battle at the 4. 5 players will hopefully be in a tight battle for PG and SG minutes (AY, AM and the 3 FR guards). Sorry, Grandy but I see him leading from the bench more so than from time on the court. The only thing countering that argument is Crews' loyalty to seniors and/or major improvement from GG.

Good times ahead!

I see GG starting early on and I also see MC starting. It will probably be AM, AY, MC, GG, and JM on day one. This will be based on experience. Coaches have stated numerous times that GG flat out gets after it at practice. I can't wait for TL and RA to get lots of playing time.

Glaze could see time at the 3 spot. With JM and TL stretching the 4 spot, Glaze could be isolated inside and be a tough load for a 3 guard to cover. He is fast enough to cover most 3s.

If our bigs can't stretch for floor, then Glaze gets doubled inside or matched up against a taller 4 and he has a repeat of last year with very lite scoring.

I'd like to see Lancona and Glaze on the floor together but they have to prove their worth defensively first.

I still think a freshman will start the majority of games.

If development goes as hoped, I'd think this is what I'd see also, but with docb's inside assessment,

I'm worried that I'm going to need to downgrade us to #88 right now instead of upgrading us to #47 like I'd hoped to by the end of Nov. Of course, I may be interpreting docb incorrectly. In either case, I'm just talking out of my armpit.
