Recruiting 2015

Recommended Posts

The kid is a two-star tool.

I know we only have one scholarship to give so we can be selective, but recruiting seems very quiet. What a difference a year makes. This time last year we already had a bunch of recruiting news due to the large number of open schollies. I think Bartley, Gillman, Jolly and Roby were all already committed by around this time last year and Reynolds was locked up about a month later.

Roby committed September 12 and Jolly committed October 1st so this period right now was probably our most active in terms of receiving news. Hopefully we get some good news in the next month but you're right, it's been very quiet.

This class is very weak. Not a lot of good players nationwide. We have made some headway with several 16 recruits. We are going to be very selective. We'll get a couple kids on campus before the season starts and hope for a commitment. Otherwise we may keep this scholly for next year.

I know a parent of a 2star 2015 big (his prep school team had two top 100 recruits last year both going to big programs) and last year I was talking to him about the recruiting process. He said that coaches told him that they were excited about the kid because it was a thinner class. He is pretty good (another friend who knows basketball has seen him play a few times) but came to basketball late despite his size (he actually was a great youth soccer player)

The kid is pretty smart and has a big upside (once again did well at summer showcases so may be a 2.5 star recruit) so I did ask about whether they would consider SLU last winter (not really but mainly because it is not a noted academic star). It is interesting to hear someone who is so explicit about using basketball to get an education. As an East coast kid he had no contact with SLU (although he has an offer from another midwest Catholic school). He really wanted to go to Harvard but as far as I know Harvard has not offered (I see on Verbal Commits that another Ivy League team has offered).

So your point we should hold the schollie because there is nobody all that good out there?

The 2015 class in Missouri is kind of interesting. While no top flight stars (beyond possibly Whitt) and not much in St. Louis, pretty solid group in state:

Jimmy Whitt - top 100 4 star from Columbia - verbally committed to Arkansas

Juwan Morgan - top 100 4 star from Waynesville - verbally committed to Indiana

Landry Shamet - top 200 3 star from Kansas City - verbally committed to Wichita State

OG Anunoby - top 250 3 star from Jefferson City - offers from Iowa, Indiana, and Ole Miss

Kevin Puryear - 3 star recruit from Blue Springs - verbally committed to Mizzou

Cullen VanLeer - 3 star recruit from Pacific - verbally committed to Mizzou

Jarred Dixon - from Lee's Summit - verbally committed to Missouri State

There is also Drew Lock who at one point was considered a solid basketball recruit before choosing to pursue football and committing to Mizzou.

It looks like all of the top Missouri prospects in 2016 are St. Louis kids with Tatum, Cook, Sneed, and Barnes.

Not sure where you are getting your rankings on the Mizzou commits. I'm sure Mizzou "media" member Gabe is really talking them up, but haven't run across national rankings listing them as "3Star" recruits.

I just went from 247Sports which lists them both as 3 star recruits:

I was not trying to overrate any of these recruits, just listing the top kids from the state and where they are going. Surprisingly, it ended up being a pretty quality class despite most of these guys being relatively unknown prospects heading into their junior years.

Why didn't anyone tell me about Juwon Morgan from my alma mater Waynesville High? I still got some clout there, having finished 2nd in Lincoln Douglas Debate at State in 1996 (I'm a master at debate). I coulda' pulled him towards SLU. Damn we could've used that dude, I mean he'll probably start at IU but he would've been a good role player at SLU. Would've been nice to see a kid outta' the means streets of da Ville' at SLU.

Don't worry, he'll transfer here.

Not saying those kids won't be good. I'm well aware these rankings are an inexact science, but 3-stars seems like a very generous ranking considering they are not Top 250 players and have generally been considered 2 star players with other sources.

Not disagreeing with you too much but Puryear is a 3-star on Rivals as well as 247. He also had offers from Ok. State, Nebraska and Creighton. I have found 247 to be the best of recruiting sites, though they are all obviously pretty unreliable in projecting these types of kids.

Not saying this is the case here, but it seems some of these sites will tweak a player's ranking AFTER a player signs based on the perceived quality of the program they have signed with. So for example, a player who signs with a BCS program, even though that player may not have many other BCS offers, all of the sudden will see an uptick in his ranking. Conversely, a player who may have a few BCS offers, will sign with a non-BCS program and will all of the sudden see a dip in their national ranking. It's basically an admission from some of these sites that they don't really know how to accurately rank a lot of these players and likely have done little evaluation. For example, if the VanLeer kid had signed with MoState, I bet he would have been downgraded in some of these rankings.

Rivals has a kid named Will Culliton as signing with SLU on September 3. They list him as our second signing for 2015, the other being Welmer. Culliton is a 6'3" guard from Plymouth, Minnesota.

Did I completely miss this kid signing with us or is Rivals totally wrong about this?

The Internets says he committed to Army. Maybe Rivals got mixed up with Crews and Army and Saint Louis.

Kedar Edwards committed to Florida St but recently decided to return to JUCo and reopen his recruitment. He averaged 17 & 8 last season, shooting 49% from the field and 45% from 3. Plays for a very good juco program in Sedalia. Demarco Buchanan (Haz Central) will be a teammate of his this year.
