I saw Welmer once in HS and followed him thru the Columbus Republic newspapaer. He played with his back to the basket, yet did connect on a few three's. He had decent rebounding numbers (for high school) but had a little trouble from the FT line......(sounds like he'll fit in.) He was second on the team in scoring, behind Josh Speidel who was a junior at the time. I think he has the size and talent to be a 4 if someone can take the 5. He will need to add muscle, as just about every 4/5 we have recruited needs. He was listed at 210 lbs going into this season. It is hard to equate his defense in HS to what it needs to be in college. His HS, Columbus North, was in the top class of Indiana HS, so he played against decent competition. I have tried unsuccessfully to find out how he is doing at Bridgton Academy.

what's current poop on Josh Speidel?

+1.... I heard rumors he's wanting to go away to school - any truth to these?

No clue. It is the job of the staff to convince him to stay home. I am not going to give them any excuses when it comes to Cook. He has been a constant presence on campus. They need to close the deal.

I know we're all hoping for the big 2016 recruiting prize, but if additional schollies open up for 2015, next year's class may very well determine the long term future of SLU w/JC.

Matt Neufeld may be the most important recruit in Jim Crews' short history at SLU. Underwhelming bigs are killing this team.

(Aside from his horrendous subbing patterns)

Josh Seidel, signed with Vermont, is in critical condition after a car crash earlier this month...at last report a few days ago the best they could say is that he's breathing.

This is the latest I posted on the Speidel thread I started when he had the accident.

Update on Josh. They are moving him to a specialty hospital. Still no "purposeful movement" but he has done some breathing on his own.

wonder if RM used all century team as bait when recruiting DE and JJ. pretty cool to both be out on court as 1/8 of the greatest Bills in a century a year after finishing best 3 years in team history. another tribute to them and their fellow seniors and reminder of what a dramatic task we have replacing them. speaking of coach Claggett (FCN' autocorrect) looks like he's on his diet.

Williams would help big time.

I don't know anything about this kid and have never seen him play, but why do you and other posters believe a kid with 2 Stars who is being recruited by mid-level mid-major programs is going to come in and contribute immediately?

Williams' recruitment took a hit when his mom announced he would be transferring to Lanphier last July and he contested it. She'd gotten a new job in Springfield but he wanted to graduate with his classmates. The IHSA defers to the parent's authority in these sitations and ruled him ineligible for the season. Iowa, Butler, and Creighton, who had been recruiting him, backed off.

His mom finally relented and Christian was cleared to play in mid-January. Iowa jumped back in his recruitment soon after. We don't get too many athletic, cerebral 6'5 shooting guards around here so understandably some of us feel he could contribute right away.

How is this for a clean house situation (assuming Ash and AM are on schedule to graduate)

Ash and AM go be 5th year transfers to Manhattan and UC-Irvine respectively.

Lancona finds a better landing spot. Three scholarships open up.

Starting 5 for next year is MR, DR, MY, RA, AG.

Is anyone really looking forward to Ash and McBroom contributing major mins as seniors? It kind of seems like a John Manning throwaway situation...

You do realize they're the second and third leading scorers on the team, right?

Plus, what I have heard and read is that his mid range game is outstanding. That would go a long way in fixing the offense. It is something the current roster is lacking.

Yes. Would rather have ash than Jake Barnett last year. He hasn't lived up to the hype (many including myself had astronomical expectations) but I don't think he's as bad as some claim

his hype was way more than JB. I don't think he's been awful. a few less to's per game and a few more of those bunnies drop per game and he'd be pretty close to where we were hoping, factoring in the rusty layoff syndrome. still hope his last year he'll gel.

Biggest school. Best school. However you want to put it. Meaning Big 10 > A 10. Like I said though, that was pre-visit to SLU. We'll see. He's a good player and even though we're probably deepest at the 2/3, I think he'd make us better.

OK. They way you wrote it, I thought there might be $$ involved.

So is Northwestern a better deal than VCU? Is DePaul a better deal than SLU? Just asking for your opinion on what you have heard.

Whether or not one of us makes the call that Northwestern is better than VCU or if SLU is better than RuPaul is immaterial --- it's what the kid believes. And 17 to 18-year-olds tend to change their minds like dust blowing in the wind.

And who is Tim Finke?
