Here's the Agreement that Ended #OccupySLU

While many of the "agreements" that President Fred Pestello are worthy and consistent with the Jesuit mission, I think there are many other worthy causes throughout the University, and these selected items were created through an act of fear by the President.

What is probably most upsetting about this is that this was not in any direct response to anything that SLU did discriminatory toward people of color, this was in response to a march and protest in response to Vonderrit Myers shooting at an officer and his family and friends claiming he was unarmed or as his cousin claimed, “He had a sandwich in his hand, and they thought it was a gun. It’s like Michael Brown all over again.” Then as the protestors realized this, they turned their anger at SLU who did nothing but embrace them peacefully. I guess this is what hanging an American flag upside down can get you.

If what Pestello agreed to is good/positive/beneficial/whatever, I'm not sure how much the "whys" should matter. I don't have much sympathy for the supporters of Vonderrit Myers on an individual level either, but the deeper issue is that law enforcement and the justice system has lost the faith and trust of a large segment of the population. That's what's really at stake here, and I don't think what Pestello agreed to is inappropriate in light of all this. If anything, he underscored the reality that SLU is a leader on these problems rather than a part of their cause by reacting in the way he did.

Well let's see, we only have one scholarship to give for next year, we are close to the start of the basketball season, and seemingly we have run out of valid issues to talk about. Given these conditions, it is reasonable to have spent a fair amount of time discussing the issues raised by the protest.

M-SLICE Executive Director Romona Taylor Williams said her group felt that SLU often pays lip service to following the Jesuit mission, but doesn't always follow through.

We felt SLU needed to address some things related to inclusion. But this is not only about SLU. We need to occupy all of the institutions where there is systemic racism,” she said.

fuok that i'd like to know how SLU suffers from systemic racism. really. they're just grasping at straws. you were marching along yelling about the death of someone who ATTEMPTED TO MURDER A COP and stopped in to kick sh.it at SLU for a whole gotdamn fuoking week because it's snazzy (though wash U is "a tad bit more snazzier", according to one of tribe x's leaders, talal ahmad) and just up the street. but we're a systemically racist institution. fuok that noise. but i guess they shut sh.it down.

He HAD to throw in that Wash U is a "bit more snazzier!" Literally laughing over this. If our campus wasn't good enough then he should have head over to that snazzy little underprivileged campus . Also he lost all his credibility with his constant unnecessary swearing IMO. "Shiit!"

Well I'm convinced by Tribe-X completely logical explanation.

This one had me rolling:

Just a few notes:

Most police departments policy on deadly force across the country is the same. Deadly force is authorized when the subject of such force acts in such a manner as to threaten the life of the officer or others.

When a law enforcement officer shoots it is to kill. That may seem harsh. Also a person does not have to be armed to be a lethal threat. People die by lack of oxygen, losing blood or severing the spinal cord. Two of those methods takes time for a person to go down and even when dying they can still shoot or harm others. So when an officer shoots they shoot until the threat is eliminated. A Glock 22 happens to hold 15 in the magazine and one in the hole for 16 rounds total. Most police forces and federal law enforcement carry Glock 22s. When your life is threatened you get a little worked up and an officer is probably not counting the rounds. So 1 or 20 bullets really doesn't matter.

Every time there is a use of lethal force there is an investigation to determine if it was valid. In the FBI the Special Agent is immediately removed from actively working and consults an attorney to provide statements to the investigative team that flies in from FBI HQ. Other law enforcement agencies have similar policies.

It is understandable to question the validity of those investigations. It is understandable to question the motives of policemen. It is understandable to question authority in the USA. However, we need police, we need laws, and unfortunately sometimes that results in clashes/mistakes/abuse of power. I'm willing to allow the investigations to take place, the hearings to proceed and judgements before "Shutting Down".

"We coming together like Transformers to shut the ###### down....What was the question again?"

I think he means Voltron. Although there were some transformers that would join together. Dude seems like he severely suffered in his formative years because he didn't know about Voltron. It's a shame. If only he could've lived a life like those in the bubble he could've watched Japanamation. Probably only knew Transformers cause he didn't have the cable to watch Voltron. #Equality #OCCUPYSLU #INEEDCABLEYA'LL

First off in response to the argument in the video if someone is trying to shoot me are they shooting to stop? I think not...if someone shoots just one time at me I will unload as many bullets on them as I damn well please!

The better analogy is clearly the Power rangers Megazord...

I generally live by the rule that if someone precedes an argument with something resembling the phrase "im majoring in X and I just took a class about this" that what they are about to say is going to be exceptionally stupid.

It's served me very well so far and this video only confirms it more.
