Ideal Athletic Department?

This isn't a knock on our department thread, but what is a realistic example in a perfect world we want our institution to work towards? Xavier? Creighton? Gonzaga? Georgetown? There seems to be so much potential and the department is stronger overall than ever, this includes commitment from university above all else.

Honest question: is our athletic department actually stronger than ever? Or do you think there might be some serious internal issues... Why were there so many recent vacancies for high level AD positions? And why does the AD always seem to be dropping the ball when it comes to very simple matters?

I think overall the profile is higher, I'm just curious to know where the bar is set. We will never be Notre Dame or even close to a Mizzou....so what's the expectation? What department across the country should we strive to be like?

The entire deal....coaches, athletes, staff, facilities. Why put all the investment into athletics and not want to be the best Jesuit program in nation? That's more university overall than athletics. Everyone matters in an organization. Again just curious to what others think should be the bar? There are Jesuit schools that spend the money to be top end, not knocking SLU but Lindenwood has facilities that are very nice and even I'd bet nicer than a lot of other D1 programs. It just looks like they get more from the university side.

I'm saying the entire deal....coaches, athletes, staff, facilities.....we went to a soccer tournament recently at Lindenwood and the fields and athletic buildings were unbelievable. They don't have a Chaifetz Arena but I'd sure take everything else. Why put all the investment into athletics and not want to be the best Jesuit program in nation? That's more university level than athletics, I think. Everyone matters in an organization. Again just curious to what others think should be the bar?

I think your premise is flawed. The best mid-major basketball programs don't necessarily arise out of the biggest athletic budgets. They emerge from a strong local basketball tradition, right down to the high school level. Missouri produces some good players but basketball isn't a religion here the way it is in Indiana or Ohio or North Carolina. The level of talent isn't consistent, the coaching these kids receive is often abysmal and the vast majority of basketball fans are of the casual variety.

-Margo from the BClub is the simply the BEST, from every indication I have she is on top of her game all the time

-Chaifetz seems well kept so good on that

-the team selling sponsorships for in arena advertising, game day promotions and radio/tv spots on broadcasts does a good job to sell as much as they do as we are a niche program now, the only time in my life we weren't was Spoonball - THANK YOU to Royal Banks, Centene and the other sponsors

-talking to a couple players after the open practices and they said the training table is well done

-sports medicine/training seems to do a nice job with the student athletes

-Rammer and Earl, nuff said

-I love the programs included in the cost of admission, very nicely done

-it looks like the Saintsaitions have been upgraded

-we seem to have a good bunch of people as student athletes

-on the other hand...we consistently have issues at the table for men's bball games

-I agree the Marketing/Communication could use an upgrade

I base AD departments on hires cause that's really I know. Seems like May has made really good hires in a couple cases. (women bball, baseball) and decent hires else where (men's bball, men's soccer, volleyball). I'm not sure I care how any other sports perform.

FWIW: I would argue that Men's Soccer was a really good hire at the time, but he certainly looks more and more like a decent hire or worse.

Here is a tiny example of what a cluster our athletic department is...

About 3 months ago I tried to order a couple Billiken basketball tshirts off SLUbillikens.com. The Chaifetz Store site.

I waited about a month and thought wow those shirts never showed up, wtf. So I emailed the customer service email, no response. I called the team shop, no answer, no return. I call the random 314 number on the order confirmation and it is some dude, not related to SLU in the least, that tells me "Oh yeah we don't have the license to print those shirts anymore, but you can choose from these three shirts" all of which were worse than anything since the winners migrating shirt. I declined and said "So when can I order non-distressed merchandise?" to which he replied with a "Not anytime soon."

So today I try to order a damn license plate frame for my new ride and this is the garbage I find..http://shop.slubillikens.com/COLLEGE_Saint_Louis_Billikens_License_Plate_And_Frames

Anyone know, online, where to find a decent looking license plate frame?

Don't understand why the Chaifetz store is not fully affiliated with the university; I believe the owner of the store is independent an owns several other stores. Such a wasted opportunity

The company they outsource their online merchandise sales to is a nightmare to deal with. I also have a story (that'd be too long and boring to recount) about how I was not able to exchange a shirt that was a gift for the exact same shirt in a size that fit me because I didn't pay for it, and by the time I had a possible resolution, they were out of my size and not going to restock it again.

oh. yeah. since i'm not gonna be around on Friday, here's my ideal AD. just hire the son of a bi.tch full of hot, slutty jock chicks. i'll bet recruiting benefits. except for sports like women's sports.

i hear the bookstore is much better now then it was even 6 months ago. But I agree. I hate everything on both websites usually.

I hate that winners migrate t short more than anything in the world. I may buy it just to troll people

Hey maybe the @SaintLouisMBB feed can use that as their next Tweet to add to the collection of previous Tweets. #WinnersMigrate

It would be kind of hilarious if a bunch of us all bought them and started wearing them to the games. We could bring duck calls with us, wear orange caps, the whole nine yards.

I'm planning on going to Rally House soon - I'll report back.

Tip for anyone designing license plate frames: the wording at the bottom is more important than the wording at the top, which is often obscured. On my car, for instance, "Basketball" would be a lot more visible than "SLU."
