SLU leads the all-time series 25-24.

SLU last won in Carbondale in 1997, when Larry Hughes took over the game at crunch time.

The most dispositive factor in this series has been the venue.

Two of my most memorable in person Billiken games were against the Salukis:

1. In my freshman year in 1978, SLU beat SIU 74-71 at the old Arena, as freshman Willie Horne hit the big shot.

2. I was there in 1993 at the Arena, with over 17,000 fans in attendance, the first big crowd of the Spoonball Days, when they removed the gold drape-like covers from the seats in the rafters at the end to accomodate the crowd. That SLU team was on fire and SIU had no chance- SLU won 100-85.

Let's just hope the history of this series repeats itself on Saturday night- with the home team winning.

Thank you for answering the second part of my question. Who wants to take a stab at the first part, i.e. notable accomplishments?

I'll answer that question when you tell us what notable accomplishment SIU-C has made in basketball besides getting away with 50 fouls per game. And making the sweet 16, while admirable, isn't all that notable.

We're fans of Saint Louis University basketball on a SLU message board: why should we have to have "notable accomplishments" to follow our own team? Most teams in the country haven't done much of note, but they still have fans. Now, if we were on a Saluki board bragging, then we might need to back up our claims with "notable accomplishments."

When precisely, was the last time SLU accomplished anything notable in college basketball ? And when was the last time SLU won in Carbondale ?

a better question is when carbondale last won in edwardsville?

you need to get over the fact that siu-e has surpassed siu-c. it happened, just take solace in the fact you can probably skip across the river and play semo a good game.

You realize that SIUE just went D1 right? How exactly has SIUE surpassed SIU?

SIUC was in the NAIA when SLU was a national power in basketball. Even when SIUC won the NIT in 1967 with Walt Frazier, SIUC was in the College Division, what is now Division 2.

SLU, with Hall of Famer Easy Ed Macauley, won the NIT, which was then much more prestigious, in 1948.

SLU left the Missouri Valley before SIUC joined that league. At one time, the MVC had schools such as Louisville, Cincinnati, Memphis State (now Memphis), all with SLU, and all before SIUC was in the MVC.

Since SIUC joined D-1, SLU has played in tougher conferences than the MVC, including now, with the possible exception of SLU's time in the MCC (now the Horizon League).

SLU has more than held its own with SIUC in the more recent years. The game results in this series have been largely decided by the home court.

The reason I posted what I did above was because of the statement that making the Sweet 16 isnt that big of an accomplishment, which is an absurd comment.

I know it has been debated a number of times, but I truly believe SLU should be in the MVC. SLU-SIU would become a crazy rivalry, so would SLU-MSU and other surrounding schools. That being said, the A-10 has been higher in the RPI for conference, but what relevance does that make that SLU is better than SIU exactly? It would mean something if SLU was a constant contender, which other than the #4 see a few years ago, have been in the middle to bottom tier since joining the A10.

Game results have been a result of the home court, but everything has to end sometime right? ;)

Who said SLU is better than SIU-C?

How we lost that game 2 years ago I willnever know.......

John Madden: "I believe SLU had more points at the end of the 2nd half, and that means they win the game. Also, SIUC had fewer points at the end of the 2nd half so that means they lose the game. If SIUC had scored more points than SLU at the end of the game, then they would have won, but that didn't happen, so they lost. You see, when a team wins, their record gets better, and when a team loses their record gets worse. That's why people like to win games so much, because it means they are beter than if they had lost."

I'm on SalukiTalk, and without giving the store away... there a few on there who are easy to get under their skin. ;)

However, please be creative with your smack. Surely you can do better than "redneck" and the ol' St. Louis classic version of the insult, "hoosier." Think of it this way, 70% of the student body comes from within two hours of Chicago. Dear Lord, with all the material out there for insults, you could bring a more creative form of smack. I'm pretty disappointed "redneck" is all you can come up with.

The real rednecks down there are UK and/or NASCAR fans anyway... if you ever lived down there you'd understand.

Right, this game is big for us. Never mind the fact that salukitalk has four threads about the game already. The fact that you hicks have been planning your big trip to the big city for months on that site. The fact that this thread was started by a SIUC fan. You really are excited about the road trip you always lose. Enjoy the thumping. Enjoy your obsession.

Salukitalk would have four threads on a game if SIU were playing St. Mary's Sisters of the Poor. We're a passionate bunch. Another exhibit of this will likely be when SIU fans are louder than the SLU fans at Chaifetz tomorrow night. ;)

Are you a Furman fan or a Carbondale fan? You seem to know a lot about SIU-C if you're a Furman guy.
