Senior VCU guard Briante Weber is going to sit out an exhibition game and the Rams' regular-season opener against Tennessee. The team is disciplining its steal specialist after he was reportedly busted for allegedly stealing an iPhone at a local gym.

That report comes via the Richmond Times-Dispatch. VCU confirmed Weber's suspension to CBSSports.com Saturday morning.

Weber is best known for his ability to steal on the court. He has 296 swipes in three seasons and is 90 away from setting a new record in men's basketball. Weber averaged 3.46 steals last season, by far the best in D-I.

Weber could also go before a Code of Student Conduct board for a review of the incident, per VCU.

"Briante has failed to live up to the standards we’ve set for our program and we are holding him accountable," VCU coach Shaka Smart said in a statement. "Part of his discipline includes missed competition. We expect that Briante will act according to the standards of our program moving forward."

Per the Times-Dispatch, Weber was handed a misdeamonor summons for petit larceny. The theft was reportedly an iPhone5, which goes for $200. Weber allegedly took the phone from a local gym on July 24, per court documents.

Weber is due in Richmond Court on Sept. 25.

The Tennessee game will be held in Annapolis, Md., as part of the inaugural Veterans Classic on CBS Sports Network.

I remember back in the late 70s there was an NC State player, Washburn, who stole a stereo. The Duke fans threw albums on the court when he came to Cameron. Surely, some of you guys must have some old cell phones hanging around that could be put to good use when we play VCU.

just hold it up, don't throw it....

Great idea Rich. Throwing cell phones or anything else on the court can only have a bad result. Everybody in the student section, however, has a cell phone. 750 cell phones being held up whenever the player's name is announced or when he is shooting FTs at the student end, would be classic.

Back in the Spoonball era, several Cincinnati players got busted making a ton of long distance calls on someone else's phone. When they came to the Savvis Center, we had signs ready with the numbers for those cheap long distance services that were around back then. They were the ones where you dialed a certain prefix to get the cheap rate. I remember one of the Cinci players smiling and giggling uncontrolably at the signs when he first came on the court.
