Nova 77 VCU 53. A10 flagship gets run out of the gym.

Definitely the media's flagship for the A10. VCU can be run out of the gym by team that play solid defense, can handle the initial full court pressure defense, run a solid half court offense, and can defend that 3 ball. That is the recipe to beat them every time. Question is will we be there by the time we face them? Time will tell.

Unlikely. Villanova is the #12 ranked team, and this Billikens squad has much growing to do.

And I don't buy in to the commonly stated notion that freshmen "are no longer freshmen by February." While they're more experienced then than at the beginning of the season, so are the sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

Sorry, but a 24 point drubbing at the hands of the #12 team in the country (and this may or may not really be the case) is NOT expected if VCU is also supposed to be a good team. And from all accounts, I understand that VCU is a good team in that VCU is full of proven veterans and highly regarded youngsters, is the best of the A10 but apparently has definite weaknesses. Either VCU is invincible or not. If they can be beaten by 24, then other teams do stand a good chance against them. In fact, as long a teams don't panic at the hands of the their swarming defense, teams generally have a decent chance in that their fundamentals have often been questionable.

As to freshmen, IMO, they are not like the freshmen of old times. Back in the day, freshmen only played against their local rivals - and usually in smaller gyms and in front of fewer fans. Then, all of a sudden, these guys would hit the "big-time" by walking on to college campuses, traveling out of town, playing in large venues, playing against truly national competition and also playing on TV for the first time. Nowadays, the high school kids play AAU ball against the best national players, they travel out of town often and probably play too many games (at the expense of practicing fundamentals), often in large venues, before large crowds and sometimes even on TV. Just consider the travel, games, pressure, etc. already experienced by Marcus Bartley, Davel Roby, etc. In short, you either can make the adjustment to the college or not, and you either make this adjustment quickly or over time. By spring, I do hope our boys will ready.

All true but you still have 18-19 year old kids going against 21-23 year old men. Big difference in strength, experience, and smarts.

.

VCU and their street ball philosophy are overrated

Every system can be exposed with the right match ups.

Not every system relies heavily on 3 point shooting and forcing turnovers through traps to win. And that is the difference. Their system doesn't do a good job of giving them a chance to win when they aren't hitting 3's and forcing a bunch of turnovers. Even most of their own fans admit that.

Shaka needs to figure out how to coach some offense and half-court defense. Otherwise they will continue to get beat by tough teams with good guards.
